Post First edition Philosopher's Stone at auction

A paperback first edition copy of Philosopher's Stone is causing quite a stir at auction, as it is looking likely that the novel will sell for nearly $20,000. Pre-auction is currently taking place online with the book being sold officially at the Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas, Texas on March 6-7. Only 200 versions of this book are in circulation.

Quote:
"This is a 1997 first edition of 'Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone' with the original publisher's illustrated softcover wrapper and an illustrated card signed by the author, J.K. Rowling. The bidding already has reached $15,000; nearly $18,000 with the buyer's premium included. The previous auction record was $10,750," James Gannon, director of rare books at Heritage Auction Galleries, said in a statement.
Quote:
"It takes a lot to shock me, but this is probably as shocked as I have ever been regarding auction bidding. Has the world gone mad? We are in the deepest recession for 80 years and a 'Harry Potter' children's paperback book is setting a record price," the seller said.
Quote:
"Now that the final book in the 'Harry Potter' series has come out and the movies are nearing completion, I think collectors are finally realizing that this is not just going to be a rare book, but also an important piece of cultural history," Gannon said.

The money should go to charity, would do wonders for the amount they're selling for.

I don't understand why there were only 200 of these books in circulation. I have a first edition paperback book from the UK and it's hard for me to figure out why it would be that valuable. What's the difference between mine and that book? okay, okay. It wasn't signed by JK, but I do have a different HP book that I got that was signed by JK, but I don't have proof. Oh well; I do have a signed Daniel Radcliffe Deathly Hallows first edition. Wouldn't that be valuable?

Not anywhere near as much because millions of DH's were in the first print run.

I think I'll keep it for now. However, there aren't millions of DH copies that were signed by Daniel, though.

This is true. I'm no expert, but I'd say you'd probably get several hundred for it, at least. But you're better off holding onto it and passing it down the generations.

Depends which book it is. Some first editions, especially OotP - DH, aren't worth much at all.
