Default Film pirates arrested and jailed

This is London has an interesting article detailing how the UK`s biggest piracy ring has been finally smashed and the culprits sent to jail.

Quote:
The two masterminds behind the racket, Dino Simm and Sidney Austin, have each been jailed for four years after a court heard they were importers and distributors of counterfeit DVDs "on a gigantic scale".

Simm, 30, and Austin, 47, sold 400,000 copies of blockbusters including Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter movies, making about £3 million in less than two years.
Quote:
The extent of their crime was revealed when police raided their headquarters, a detached house in a smart suburb of Waltham Abbey, and found a room piled floor to ceiling with 26,000 DVDs.
Quote:
Jailing them, Judge Inigo Bing said: "This was well-organised, run as a business... a truly large-scale operation."

James Angell, director of operations at the Federation Against Copyright Theft, said the pair's arrest was a "massive blow against piracy", adding: "They saw there was a huge amount of money to be made from selling big cinema hits.

"Consumers thought they were getting a great deal. It's hard to resist a market stall selling the latest films for bargain prices. But in reality they were funding crime on a grand scale. The discs they were buying were copied CD-roms which quickly wreck conventional DVD players by interfering with their laser readers."

hmmmm i always find f.a.c.t. a lil dodgy to be honest. I think almost anything can be used to fund crime and the fact is that most people who buy pirate copies of films do so until they can either afford, or until the film they're waiting for actually comes out. I'm not sure about piracy, however i don't think its quite right them making so much money off it although you could call them amazing entrepreneurs.

That's nothing. I wonder if a police will come here, he'll arrest the whole of Palestine!

26,000 DVDs? Ah Please.... I've seen more.

Must be some relief to the filmmakers...after all that money they spent in making those movies....

26,000 dvds! Thats alot. But of course there is a lot more sinister things in the world going on than piracy. I mean murders and everything. 4 years is a bit harsh but i suppose they deserved it. But i've seen much worse stuff being given less time than four years such as rape and assualt.

They won`t serve all the time. A bloke brain damaged a woman by kicking her in the head 40 times and only served 2 years of his sentence.

They`ll probably serve 18 months maximum.

It's kinda stupid to go after people like that. It might be wrong, but hey, you gotta make a livin don't you? Go for killers and stuff like that.

I wonder I if they got the people at the flea market down here. They were passing out cards and everything. I think I kinda made then nervous when I shouted really loud to my mom. I was like "Hey mom look. They got HP DVDs. The pirate ones you can buy." lol. Those people were just shaking their heads. They just wanted me to shut up.

The point being made was that they money made was funding crimes such as murder.

26,000 isn`t making a living, it`s criminalistic. There are real jobs out there, after all.

I can understand the odd DVd here or there but not tens of thousands.

Forget the filmmakers, no wait, I mean the movie studios, it's the creator's who get the shaft. The actor's, the director, the musicians, which is to say nothing of the people who created the whole universe to begin with [JK].
I think the people who create these things, and those who take a part in making paper fantasies into celluloid dreams should profit from their work, you're stealing money from them [as if capitalism isn't set up to do that already].

I'm pretty disappointed in the lax attitude some people seem to be voicing here too...people crime is crime...it's wrong...it may not be as severe or need to be punished as severely as other more heinous crimes but come on, stealing is still wrong. Instead of being all "Well it wasn't a murderer" we should be "Hey they got crooks off the street." If you want to be all there mother didn't love them that's a different story. Cops need to work too people.

Hey, but some countries depend on pirate copies, like us, noway the Israelis let us buy from other countries original copies. So I would be very surprised if I found an original copy in any store, if we don't sell pirated games, dvds, cds, then we would have nothing at all.

Poo! I didn't know that. Just when you think life's black and white...that sucks, kind of like America's embargo of Cuba.

But is it right in some instances? Not this one...people should just wait until they come out, pirate copies usually suck, trust me I was burned once.
