| | | Feeling the hate from Potter fans
Jack Markowitz who previously wrote an article referring to Harry Potter as "most over-praised, over-publicized" has written another piece in response to the backlash he received from fans. Quote:
He attacked the Larry Totter children's fantasy books (not their real name). He rapped them not so much as reading matter, but as an economic phenomenon. He said they caused people to overreact and overspend on a product not exactly bad but just not that good. Not worth, for example, standing in line at midnight to buy full-price, first-day copies. People were caught up in a fad, he said. Marketing mania and media hype fooled them. Otherwise sensible parents were caused to believe they had to buy a lot of oversold stuff.
Quote:
An avalanche of e-mails, 200 at least, and all against him.
Quote:
Long and short (up to 1,000 words) aroused devotees slammed the notion that the fictions they love may not be wonderful. Adults, children, professors and stay-at-home moms piled on. E-mails clogged the inbox from as far as Finland and New Zealand.
Quote:
Most defenders weren't unreasonable. They denied being hype-notized. It was honest word-of-mouth from friends of relatives that got them hooked. They said readers discovered the books before the news media did. More importantly, they got kids reading and unshackled from the true addictive trash of childhood: video games and television.
Quote:
Some e-mailers were so upset they came close to being unkind. A few used unprintable words. Others said the old opinionizer must be envious of the author's $1 billion fortune. Or that he was religiously biased against the boy hero's tricks of "wizardry." Or, unkindest of all, that he never read any the books. But he had. One. And it was enough.
Quote:
More troubling was a declaration by many Totter-heads that they've read all five books -- 2,700 pages in toto -- a half-dozen times each! As if layers and layers of meaning are to be found in them. Plus, subtle clues to the unfolding of the plot. In short, the series is a field of study. (Colleges, it's said, are starting to offer courses!) More than a good read is going on here. It suggests a psychological need, a community of feeling with readers "into it" around the world. A kind of cult, in fact, boosted by the peer pressures of child consumers.
It goes too far. Just too far. Life is hardly long enough to get through all the great literature once, even. To think of so much time, taste and eyesight being spent on anything less than first-class.

I have a few words to say to Mr. Markowitz myself, so I'm sending an email right now...LOL...well, what can I say? Any thing that has become massively popular has been treated this way. Millions of us think HP is great, while a few out there can't really fathom what the hype is all about. Again, nothing new here, but its amusing.
Mr. Markowitz must be feeling very lonely right now...LOL.
First to post!

Wow. He's an idiot indeed. And if he only read the first HP book I understand. I skipped that one because my mom said it was far from great. He should read book 3. It's the best HP book out there! Brilliant and exciting. Like a John Grisham thriller. lmao

Maybe i'll write that stupid person an e-mail, just to tell him what I think about him...
BTW what book do you think he read , the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th, the 5th or the manuscript of the 6th, if he didn't like it so much?

We have no idea, he just says he's read one of the Potter books. Maybe you could ask him if you're going to email him.

| In Love with Touz | | Lil Mikky-Mu My mum read the first 3 and then stopped. It was fun, she liked them, they were getting too dark. Fine. She doesn't object to her children reading them because it's reading (she made us the avid readers we are) and she appreciates the fine writing.
I think Mr. M is a an arrogant elitist who enjoys being right - if only in his own view (which is skewed to say the least).
Why bother arguing with people like that?! Pity he has the power of the media.

before the hp movies came out, there were people who read the books before, right? (assuming, because im in the US and not many ppl have heard of it until the movies.) it's lasted this long, and hp (books and movies) has only improved with time! it's motivated kids to read and i think it's brought the world a little closer together.

I just sent him an email. I told him to go and do something more useful with his life than sitting there critizing people who don't deserve it. Is he a book critic? I personally don't understand the point of critics, they are a waste of space, I mean why can't people make their own minds up whether they like something or not? How are people chosen for the job anyway, by their ability to run people down in a supposedly funny way?

I really don't understand how some people get so upset when they here of children reading Harry Potter. Those people really need to stop and realize that.. Hey did I just see a kid pick up a book?!?! I love reading but I have been doing it for about 15 years now. Before way too much tv and computers being everywhere. At least they are reading and I think that reading something they enjoy is better then sitting in front of a tv and watching violent tv shows.
