[img]http://www.snitchseeker.com/images/news/hp_grandpre_80.jpg' align='middle'> Fans petition J.K. Rowling to remember young poet - Mattie Stepanek Summary:
This past June, muggles everywhere lost one of their most treasured possessions. Article:
Thanks to Wizardnews Quote: Matthew J.T. Stepanek, known as "Mattie" to most of the world, lost his battle with a rare form of muscular dystrophy. The disease had claimed the life of his three elder siblings.
Mattie was best known for his touching collection of poems, Heartsongs. The series, which contains five volumes of poetry, had made the New York times bestseller list on three separate occasions.
His honest and sometimes heart-wrenching sentiments on life, death, loss of loved ones and God won him fans across the world. Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, former President Jimmy Carter, and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling are just a few celebrities who followed the writings of the young poet. Quote: Mattie’s courageous struggle with dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy ended on June 23, 2004, at the age of 13. The disease, which impairs certain motor skills, also affected his elder siblings, as well as Mattie’s mother, Jeni.
His Heartsongs collection was a compilation of poems Mattie had been writing since the age of three, when he lost his elder brother to illness. The original Heartsongs, first published in 2001 to nationwide acclaim, was followed by Journey Through Heartsongs, Hope Through Heartsongs, Celebrate Through Heartsongs, and Loving Through Heartsongs. A self-proclaimed ambassador for "world peace," and a representative for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Mattie Stepanek’s life was an inspiration to many people. Though his own Heartsong has taken flight, there is little doubt he will be remembered, and cherished, forever.
The editors of The Quibbler want to recognize Mattie for his accomplishments, his sweet heart, and his inspirational life. In tribute to Mattie, we've organized a petition to ask JK Rowling and the publishers of Harry Potter (with Mattie's mum's permission, of course) to somehow place Mattie's name in one of the two remaining Potter books. Help us out by clicking this link and adding your name to the list! Wizardnews |

Thats an interesting idea. I thought Mattie was so great, and it would be a nice honer to have a dedication to him.

That would be a nice way to remember him. I wonder if JK would create a new character for him or maybe change the name of an existing new character she's planning to introduce in Book 6 or 7?? This is of course if she will mention his name..I think it would be cool if she did. :sun:

Hmmm.... Mattie was a cool kid. But I don't really think he was really meant to be in the Harry Potter books, unless it was like, the dedication page... I think that would be nice
Yet...
I just figure there are a LOT of kids out there who have fought/are fighting with cancer who love Harry Potter, and I don't see it as fair to them.

Mattie was a great kid, with a lot of talent I have to say, I saw him in the Oprah Winfrey Show two years ago, and only by seeing him you could say he was special, but I don't think is up to us to ask JK to put him in the books, I don't know how keen would she be in the idea but maybe in the dedication...... anyway it's up to her

I agree that he was talented as a poet and its sad that he gone, but its up to JKR to decide who she wants into her book. Plus, there are could be thousands of children out there battling the same diease or cancer who are Harry Potter fans, and that's not fair to them. Just becasue he wrote poems and was a fan of HP, why does it matter if hes in the book, only the people who know about the petition are going to know that this character was named after him.
If I sound insensitive, Im sorry.

I disagree, because if she puts his name in the Harry Potter books somehow, then he may represent all the children who have had, died of, or lost someone to not just cancer or muscular distrophy, but anykind of life-threatning disease....

So then she would be dedicating the book to me?? I had a friend that I went to dance class with for five years and she died of cancer, really now, there are hundreds of kids out there how have died from cancer, and yes, its very sad and unfortunate, but its a book. It wouldnt be fair, and its JKR's decision to dedicate her book to anyone she wants, you cant petition for someone to do something with their own personal property.

I must say, I agree with the people that say that there shouldn't be a petition. It IS very unfair to not only all the other terminally ill Harry Potter Fans out there, but also to all other authors, because then people would be petitioning every other popular author for the same treatment, and I am sure it puts the author(s) in a very awkward position. Not wanting to say no, but not wanting to sound heartless.
It would be like you working SOOO hard to earn a vacation to DisneyLand, and having someone come up and say, "Look, my friend is dying of cancer, and they really, really, REALLY like you, so could you give them the vacation in your stead?" It puts yhou in a very uncomfortable place.
I am VERY sorry to hear about Mattie. I truly am. But who's to say that she wasn't already planning to do a dedication to him in her next book anyway?

| It would be nice to see Mattie's name in one of the books. I hope that many more people sign this petition. It's a small but sweet way to honor someone so very special. Mattie was a special boy with a heart big enough to envelope the whole world. Goodbye Mattie, you'll be dearly missed, and your message will never be forgotten. |

I think that would be nice I agree, a small dedication on one of the first content pages would be a nice idea, but even still, I don't know why there should be a petition, I mean it is a nice idea but it's up to JK Rowling, and if she says No, I think people would really slate her for it, when in truth it really is upto her.... He was an inspiration person and a brave kid, but it's JK Rowling's decision at the end of the day and if she says No then it should be respected.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Remus James Lupin (RJ) Second Year | Gryfflepuff It would be great to see Mattie sorted into a house...Gryffindor of course because he was a very couragous young man. I love his writings and the album that Billy Gilliam did using Mattie's poems is pretty good, too.

Okay this is going to sound heartless, why do people constantly start petitions to get authors, movie makers and such do what they want? This petition is wrong because like so many people have stated it leaves JK in a position where people will think badly of her if she refuses the petition. I'm sure this boy was very brave and very talented (I've never heard of him til now, but will look him up) I feel for his family. What I find really tragic is how so many of his family died from this disease. But there are so many children and people who bravely face diseases that are fatal to them, and they are all special.

I have a question...Was this Mattie a big HP fan? Was one of his dreams to meet JK Rowling? Why not ask him to be mentioned or dedicated to in other children series? Do you see where I'm going with this? Personally I don't like this petition to emotionally blackmail any author. So just curious to all the people who signed this: What if she says no. What will your reaction be then?
I don't know who this person is, and while I am quite teary eyed reading his plight I think that what JK does with her books is her decision.

| look im sure Mattie was great person, im sure he was very special and talented and all that but Jo writes the books. it is not up to us to tell her what to put in them its only up to us to read them and make them the best darn books ever!! i mean yes maybe she will include him in dedication to his memory and others memory's as well like she did for someone in the fourth book, but other than potter that was the only real name in any of the books. she said that she tries to keep Harry as separate from the real world as much as possible. I dont think ill sign the petition but no matter what decision Jo makes im sure ill love her books just the same!!
