| | | Fan loses domain to J.K.Rowling
Jessica Lares (Hermione) has emailed me the following news: Quote: JKR wins typosquatting claim
JK Rowling has won an order for the transfer of two domain names, “kjkrowling.com” and “www-jkrowling.com”, that had been registered by a known typosquatter.
If you accessed one of those two sites accidentally by mistyping the URL for JKRowling.com you'd be bombarded by pop-ups. That's what typosquatting is - a cheap way to get hits. MuggleNet has this problem.
Her agents are also in the process of taking my domain away, http://www.jk-rowling.info because it is against copyrights.
Thanks to Jess for this! |

That's a shame...sigh. That webname was probably was just a coincidence, wasn't it? Oh! I know...maybe she should put up some temporary boards while she undergo a change of domain name hopefully relatively close to her original domain. You see, my forums, s4.invisionfree.com/The_Pacific_Phoenix, is close to the world of HP, and yet also close to our world too...and sadly enough, no one bothered to sign up for my forums so it is currently inactive, even though it has been over 6 months since it was created. Luckily enough, I don't think my forum's name is copyrighted.
*Ahem*....Anyway, back to the subject (may have carried on a bit to much ). A fan's domain being taken away just for the coincidence of a domain name? That's just outragous. She's a fan, not a-a imposter-wanting-to-take-more-web-hits (aka typosquatter). Well, ah, I'm assuming some of you are feeling the same I'm feeling...right?

Oh, so that's what its called! Yeah, it's annoying that some people would take advantage of you when you just mistyped the web address of a site in the address bar...
Well, I think it would be better to just change the name of her [Jessica Lares] domain, because, well a [.info] site is the same as a [.com] or a [.net] site... And since JK Rowling's official site is jkrowling.com, of course, the developers of her site wouldn't want contenders which people might think to be the Official JK Rowling site... Imagine typing up jk-rowling in the address bar, then because [.info] is becoming a popular ending word for a site, if a person would type that with jk-rowling, they might wonder why they weren't able to access the official JK Rowling site...
EDIT: I tested it out... Try typing http://www.jkrowling.info... it will redirect you to the official JK Rowling site... So if a person, let's say, mistakenly put in a hyphen between jk and rowling, that person would wonder why they haven't been redirected to the official JK Rowling site... So JKR's agents really have a good basis for doing so...
Thanks for the info! :sorcerer:

It does not violate any copyright laws. And we were not "typosquatting". All we were intending to do, is have a message board on/about JK Rowling's website. JK Rowling's agent, Neil, wanted the domain, so to resist any legal action, we have given up jkrowling.info. jk-rowling.info still remains in our power.
Hope I mead my point. :sorcerer:

That stinks, but I have to say I agree with Edge. Jess can get a new domain... She probably should not have picked a domain so close to the one JKR had, even if her intentions where perfectly legal.

Well, I'm glad she got rid of the typo squatters -- I strongly dislike those people. As for Jessica's site, I agree woth Edge, the domain is just too similiar. She should just change her domain instead of having it shut down.

Personally I think anything with JKRowling is an infringement on her name thus in a sense typesquatting. It is her name not anyone else's. She or her agents should have control of them. It's a hard call with fan sites that only want to do good, but I can understand her agents wanting the domains back.
Loads of celebrities are having to spend money to take back domain names, even some huge companys have also had to it. Domain names should not infringe on an individual personal name or a company. Both groups have worked hard for their success and to have a porn site or a site full of pop-ups using their names isn't fair to them. So families of great people, especially authors and songwriters are having to fight in court for their family member's copyrights. One of the biggest is the guy who wrote the original Winnie the Pooh book. His wife and daughter are having to fight Disney right now on just many rights he sold. Disney is doing things with Pooh that the author could have never dreamed possible but Disney refuses them royalities, saying they "own" everything Pooh including things like computer games and such that weren't named in the sales contract.
