| | |  Equus understudy in the spotlight
You may recall our story earlier this month about Richard Griffiths falling ill not long after the opening night of Equus and being replaced for a few days by understudy Colin Haigh. In a recent interview, Haigh describes how he dealt with the pressure of the situation. Quote:
Self-deception, mainly. It's a sort of confidence trick against yourself. You force yourself into a pretend calmness - and, at first, I came on with the script.
At one point, I was looking straight out into the black of the audience, and someone took a shot of the stage with a mobile phone. There was a red flash right in my eyes, like a sniper's laser-targeting device. That did throw me.
And how did Dan Radcliffe deal with it all? Quote:
He was almost gleeful. It was like a challenge, suddenly having to act against someone else. A lot of the lines are questions. I managed without the script for quite a while; when in doubt about the right line, all I had to do was say "Go on" to Daniel and he would just fill in.
