| | | Empire Online interviews Mike Newell Empire Online has interviewed Mike Newell about the process of setting about adapting a beloved novel to screen. Quote: Were you given a set of guidelines that you had to cohere to some extent with the three previous films?
I think that the studio and producers were very liberal about that. I didn’t feel that at all. Once in a while there was, “Oh no, you don’t have a wand like that.” Depending on whether I was feeling bloody-minded or not I would accede to that or kind of growl at it, “Why can’t you have a wand like that, who says?” But it was only ever the details.
There was no kind of orthodoxy – except of course you were there to put a famous novel on the screen, therefore you can’t change it that much.
There were a couple of times, where, particularly in the structuring of the Voldemort’s story, we were having real difficulty fitting in precisely the line that Jo had written. She said, “Fine, change it.” I think she knew we wouldn’t have changed it out of all recognition. She knew we would be careful and respectful. It was sort of relaxed actually.

thats a great excerpt..and even though they did make a few changes in the voldy scene, it wasnt so horribly obvious and the it still received the desired effect. i felt that the graveyard scene and voldemort lived up to my expectations the most! i love that scene..

Graduated | that was cewl. Newell sounds like a great guy. I loved how Voldemort looked....it was rather chilling yet chuckle-worthy how he was nose-challenged. But that's how he was described--with slit nostrils. At first he looked funny, but then when you watched him talk and do all his freaky movements he starts to look really quite scary the more intensely you stare at him........O I thought it was really cewl when he first transformed and when his cloak was billowing and starting to lay down on the ground--the music during it---it sounded like darth vader breathing and I was like O GOSh please don't tell me they're gonna have that during the whole (graveyard) scene cuz I might have crapped my pants. And then he does his slow alienish head turn. Gosh the kids in our theater were crying.

You know, Voldie wasn't really that scary in my opinion. He looked kind of, well, like an alien! But he was still kinda creepy! But I thought that the movie was a bit intense for even kids around my age. [12 peoplez] I think that PG-13 was probably the right rating for it!
