| | | DH is just like a part of the Bible? (spoilers!)(UPDATED!)
The Harry Potter novels have ranked higher in best seller lists than the Bible ... but is it true that Deathly Hallows is almost identical to Matthew 6? Oddly enough, Christianity Today thinks they're pretty similiar.
When ...
Also, the following is mentioned, too. "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other."
The article can, once again, relate this back to Dumbledore.
So which is it? Coincidence, chance, or intended? Did JK Rowling read these verses and decide that they had a good bit of truth to them?
Personally, I think it's quite awesome. Dumbledore was a wise man, and he learned from the things that I'm assuming he read.
Thanks to SSer jrtpuplvr for the tip! UPDATE: Going along with Matthew 6...
Shannon just went to Mass this morning. Their Gospel reading was John 12; 32-48.
This is a direct quote from the Bible: Quote:

| That's very interesting! I'm Catholic but not very well-versed in the words of the Bible, but it's neat to see this pointed out. I'm not sure if all of the religious undertones were intended by JKR {I feel like most of them surface simply because she is Christian and, therefore, everything she produces will be influenced in some way by that}, but these certainly seem like they took some research and were meant to be there.

Either way, the first is probably more likely to be a coincidence. I mean, you can't just copy bits from another book without citing -- that's illegal. Actually, the quote is literally word for word exact with the King James Version translation. It's really unlikely that this is a coincidence, as there are innumerable ways to put forth this same idea or concept... that wouldn't have required the exact same word usage.
And because she opted to use the KJV, which was originally published in 1611 and has passed out of copyright almost universally... it isn't illegal. Besides that, this is a fairly common verse so I'm certain she was expecting people to recognize it for what it was.

I believe it to be intentional. JKR has a lot of inspiration from outside sources and uses so many different ways to tie in mythology and other sources. Since she is into deeper meanings, moral messages, and connecting to readers, this would make complete sense that it would be intentional.
It also proves that all these claims that Harry Potter is anti-Christian and pro-devil is ludicrous. The Harry Potter series are some of the most moral works that have proven to be positive influences in people's lives...They have been in mine for the past 10 years.

If she intended it or not who really cares? I mean CS Lewis wrote The Narnian Chronicles about Christianity and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is the same thing except he added some principles from other religions. Fantasy likes to borrow from the Bible because it makes kids more interested in religion anyway.....so brilliant JK.

that is preety amazing!
if JKR did write that with intentions thats great, she's wise, and she passed it on to a character in a world wide loved book, but if not, that's still some powerfull stuff!

I don't think DH is anything like the bible at all and i think it's silly to say that it's just coincidence just because something like that is in the bible doesn't mean she got it from their, anyone could of said or come up with something like that! (just my opinion) But i'm not suprised it sold more copys then the bible!

Hm, well, I have been connecting some incidents from DH with the bible, so it could be like the bible or could be not. Regardless of what anyone says.
I went to Borders one time with my boyfriend, and we were looking in the Religion (moreso Christian) section of the place. He found a book about HP relating to the bible. I can't remember what that book was call.. I think there's more than one.
But nevertheless, it's really awesome and cool that it was in there =] So if it were to be intentional, or not, coincidence, or by reason, it was a good thing it'd be there.

It might be intended, yet I really think some are just thinking too much about coincidences.
Altho I agree, I think the second quote would better fit with Snape, before I read it I thought of him instantly.

Hogwarts RPG Name: unsorted | its clever, intresting and awesome, they might have similarities but it is still between coincidence and intended...which means one thing, Harry Potter isnt entirely about witchcraft and sorcery like what others are pointing out and banning reading the books, its talks about life issues too and many many wonderful things.... |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Callisto Maven | I think Jo has said she is a Christian (or at least part of the Church of Scotland or something like that) and I think it was on purpose (the verse is word-for-word, after all). When my sister and I read that part in the book we recognized it from the Bible right away. It's really awesomely cool how she used it.
