Post Deathly Hallows: Part I top-grossing Harry Potter film in international markets

Warner Bros announced that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I has become the highest-grossing Harry Potter film in international markets (outside the U.S. and Canada). The previous recorder-holder was the first installment of the series, 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which took in $657 million around the world; Deathly Hallows: Part I as of today grossed $657.24 million.

To date, Sorcerer's Stone is still the number one Harry Potter film overall internationally (including U.S. and Canada), and domestically in terms of box office. The first Harry Potter film took in $974.7 million worldwide, and $317.6 million in the U.S. and Canada. Deathly Hallows: Part I so far falls at number three, behind Sorcerer's Stone and Half-Blood Prince, in the U.S and Canada, and second to the first movie internationally with a take of $951.5 million as of today.

Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Picture, Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing for Warner Bros. Pictures commented on the accolade in a new press release.

BURBANK, CA, March 9, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 has become the highest grossing installment in the Harry Potter franchise in international markets. With just months to go before the release of the finale of the record-breaking film series based on the beloved books by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 has earned a staggering $657.24 million and counting, soaring past the previous record-holder, 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which grossed $657 million. The announcement was made today by Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

“It’s tremendously gratifying to reach this benchmark as we enter the final stretch of this remarkable journey,” said Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “We share this achievement with Jo Rowling, whose books are the foundation of this rich and vibrant world, as well as the talented people who brought her vision to life on the screen.”

“We are also incredibly proud of our teams around the world who have brought a consistent level of excellence, passion and ingenuity to the campaigns for these films,” said Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing for Warner Bros. Pictures. “And, of course, we’re thrilled that longtime fans and new audiences alike have continued to champion each film, resulting in the huge success of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.”

Kwan-Rubinek added, “These numbers speak to the phenomenal and enduring strength of this property, which has captivated audiences across all borders, regardless of age or culture. We’re looking forward to releasing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 this summer, which will be a fitting way to bring to a close the movie event of a generation.”

With the success of its first six of seven titles, the Harry Potter series had already achieved the distinction of being the top-grossing film franchise of all time, with a combined worldwide gross of $6.37 billion. This benchmark for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1—which has earned $951.8 million worldwide—as well as the anticipation for Part 2, opening globally on July 15, 2011, should ensure its place in film history for years to come.

The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I Blu-ray and DVD sets, out on April 11, 2011 in the U.K. and April 15, 2011 in the U.S., can be pre-ordered on the WB Shop or Amazon at the links below. A list of international dates for the DVD's release can be found here.

That's an impressive total for the series. It'll be interesting to see just how big the opening is for Part 2, because I'm sure its long-term gross will be at least as high as Part 1.

Am I the only one who thinks that Part 2 should earn at least 1 billiion world wide? There are only 7 movies which were capable of achieving this feat and the 8th HP movie should be the 8th on that list It needs to go out with a bang

It was the top grossing film last year as well. The world is going to really miss Harry Potter. The movies have been consistently huge for 10 years.
