Post David Yates talks plans for OotP

The Independent today featured a section in which David Yates, the director for 'Order of the Phoenix', talked about a scene he would like to include in the fifth Potter film which is due to start filming in Spring 2006.

Quote:
For all his magic powers, even Harry Potter must occasionally succumb to the petty burden of local government bureaucracy.

A highlight of the superhero's next film outing will (hopefully) see Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe leading a high-speed broomstick chase, James Bond-style, down the Thames.

Unfortunately, the film's director, David Yates, who is currently masterminding pre-production, says that several local councils are refusing to play ball.

"So far, we have spent a lot of time on boats on the Thames," he tells me.

"I want to do a great big wizard chase past the London landmarks and it is going to be very exciting, but it has not been easy to set up.

"We need to secure the co-operation of 17 different councils, and some of them are doubtful at this stage.

"My location manager is going to spend the next four months trying to sort it all out - we don't start shooting until the spring."
This scene sounds to me like the Advance Guard part where Harry is transported from Privet Drive in Surrey, to Grimmauld Place in London. However, nothing is official, as David states quite clearly in the article.

Spring?... In the next four months?... It will be autumn in the next four months, not spring ...

Why?

Spring isn't in the next four months; what he means is it'll take fourth months of negotiations - the reason he has such a big amount of time to negotiate in is because filming won't start until Spring 2006 at the earliest. The '-' means because, in a way.

This could also mean the Thestral flying scenes on the way to the DoM. Either way it's very close to the book - even though the chase bit only comes into play with Moody who thinks he's being chased.

Sounds like he's adding extra scenes where they're not needed. OotP is sooooo long and he really needs scene??

It isn't an extra scene. There are two key flying scenes that take place around London; The Advance Guard and the Thestrals going to the DoM. It could be either of them.

Extra scenes? I just hope they don't cut anything from the book.

It's already too long.

They're not extra scenes though. It may not be an actual 'chase' in the book but two scenes that sound like this definitely happen.

Yes, but if you remember, the flight to the DoM takes place on Thestrals. Not on broomsticks. Plus, there isn't a chase scene that takes place with The Advance Guard. He's adding (maybe) a chase scene to the flight. Which would make it more exciting; but not what happened to the book.

True, so it would be the Advance Guard. Maybe he's just describing it as a chase, after all the book does say Moody treats it like one because after GoF, he becomes paranoid.

That's what I think he's planning on doing. Which is fine. I don't see why it's bothering so many people. The movies are never like the book. Surely they all know that by now.

Even if he means Moody (who does think they're being chased) I don't see why David had to say it's a "big wizard chase". It's a big wizard operation for sure, but it's not exactly a chase. I was doubtful though if someone was big as Brendan Gleeson would return to HP just for a small bit part.

Of course, there's no saying he'll get permission because he needs 17 councils to approve it. Mind you, brooms can't fly in reality so it's probably just landscape shots that they want which'd probably be done via helicopter.

♥ Doctor Sarah ♥ Rupert's Teddy Bear

i personally think that making a movie out of the 5th book is gonna be pretty difficult...1-becuz its too big..2- as it has a lot of important things in it..so thatswhy the movie wud be missing out on lotsa important stuff...3- theres too much of action in it...harry wud be turnin into james bond...lol....it shud be a big movie or we'd be missing lots..looking forward to seeing Luna and Umbridge .....anyway 5th movie is a long way ahead so all i'm thinking abt is the 4th movie and the 6th book

Perhaps it's the wording, but I read it too as if Harry is being chased on his broom stick. Do they mean that the advance guard is 'chasing' past London landmarks? Because then it wouldn't be a made up scene, but it's not registering with us Americans I guess. haha.

Let's scrap this scene and make sure that Ron plays quidditch. LOL
