In an interview with MTV David Yates & Dan Radcliffe discuss scenes that were deleted from Order of the Phoenix, some of which made it onto the DVD. Yates explains why sometimes things have to go and Dan talks about a scene toward the end with Ron. Quote:
"We were just keeping a slightly cleaner line," director David Yates said. "There were so many moving parts; that's the danger of the book compared to the film. One of the things that people, even non-'Potter' fans, love is the clarity of the films. They feel like they got it. So in removing some things, which we all love, we allow a whole new audience in."

"That's a scene that was cut a bit before you got to that bit," star Daniel Radcliffe said. "You see a bit, and if we had just continued the shot, that's what would have happened. It's a sweet moment between Harry and Ron, but Rupert [Grint] and I shot that really early on, and we were maybe not quite into our characters at that time. It is a sweet scene though."

"We had a lovely actress play Lily," Yates said. "And we may bring her back. But by introducing Lily and the Lily/Snape plot, that back story, we complicated it too much. We had to cut it."

Funny. I never thought non-Potter fans get the film - Half of my friends who haven't read the books didn't get GoF very well at all.

Mehh. I still think they should have kept the Lily/Snape plot. It's not like it would have been longer than a moment. The Marauders' scene was incredibly brief as it was.
But it's nice to know they're thinking of bringing the Lily actress back.

When they say that it would have 'complicated' things too much, they're basing it on what happened in DH.
I personally did not draw on a connection between Snape and Lily in OotP and so it wouldn't have created a problem for any in terms of a backstory. To be honest, Harry seeing that scene had no meaning without the interaction between Snape and Lily.
And they better include the Snape/Lily thing in DH - that was a HUGE story-line, and I reckon fans would completely boycott the movie if that happened.

I mean, why and how would it complicate things? 
when book 5 came out we all thought Snape loved Lily (we were right) 
but until 7 we didn't know for sure, so what made it complicated? They should have kept it for the fans, or at least put it on the DVD
