Post Daniel Radcliffe talks Harry Potter studio tour, Frankenstein, Proust Questionnaire

Daniel Radcliffe, while promoting The Cripple of Inishmaan on Broadway, recently spoke to Newsday about his preference of the best parts to visit at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter in England, as well as his role in the upcoming Frankenstein, where his Igor will indeed have the famous hump.

Quote:
Last time we spoke, I had a question from an 11-year-old friend. This time, it's from 14-year-old Jula, from San Diego.
Daniel Radcliffe:
Ah, yes, very good.

She's going to London tomorrow for the first time, and I thought you'd like to know that all Western civilization pales compared to --
Dan:
She's doing the studio tour?

Yeah. Ask her where she's going in London, and the only thing she says is: the "Harry Potter" studio!
Dan:
Well, that's cool -- she'll have a good time.

Anything she should watch for?
Dan:
The things I think are coolest are the art department models. People don't realize Hogwarts is a model. There's no castle. It was a brilliant miniature. I think it's still on the tour. We filmed a bit at Annick Castle in Newcastle, and they've blared that association for all it's worth. We were there for like two weeks for the first film. And they're like, "This is Hogwarts, you guys." In fact, Hogwarts was made by model makers. Every book would come out, and Jo Rowling would've added some new room. So we'd have to add a bit on. It was constantly changing, expanding.

Quote:
Tell me about Igor -- only one of the most beloved characters ever. This film has a new take?
Dan:
There are so many Frankenstein stories out there. It's like Max Landis has sewn together the dead corpses of other Frankenstein films, books and mythologies to make this. Igor gets a backstory, which we've never seen before, and the relationship between him and Dr. Frankenstein is more level. A lot of it is just Victor going insane and me trying to drag him back from the edge. But, yeah, it's a really good dark adventure movie.

Will there be a hump?
Dan:
There will. Not for the whole film, though, so I'll leave that to your imagination.

Dan also took the Proust Questionnaire with Vanity Fair, discussing some of his likes and dislikes, and personal preferences of others.

Quote:
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Eating breakfast foods at a time of the day other than breakfast.
Dan:
Pancakes for dinner—I’m happy.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Dan:
My ability to invariably say exactly the wrong thing in any given situation.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Dan:
Arrogance.

What is your favorite journey?
Dan:
From the airport to home.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Dan:
Of the seven? Chastity.

On what occasion do you lie?
Dan:
Press junkets, backstage at plays (if required), and on questionnaires, obviously.

What do you dislike most about your appearance?
Dan:
My smile. It’s crooked.

Which living person do you most despise?
Dan:
Someone you don’t know.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Dan:
“You know.” I catch myself saying it about five times per sentence when I’m nervous, and it’s annoying.

What is your greatest regret?
Dan:
I’m 24! I think it’s a little early for all that.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Dan:
So far it’s been working in the film industry.

When and where were you happiest?
Dan:
It’s hard to pick one time. I feel like I’m quite a happy person. My ninth birthday was epic, though.

Which talent would you most like to have?
Dan:
I wish I could draw. I think it’s possible to become good at most things just by practicing a lot. But no amount of time and effort will make me good at drawing.

What is your current state of mind?
Dan:
Slightly taken aback by how deep this questionnaire wants to get.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Dan:
I would talk slower. When I hear myself interviewed sometimes it sounds like I’m running an auction.

If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
Dan:
Nothing. I’m lucky.

What is your most treasured possession?
Dan:
My treasure chest.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Dan:
Something terrible happening to someone I love and being powerless to help.

Where would you like to live?
Dan:
London and New York.

What is your most marked characteristic?
Dan:
I’m quite energetic.

What is the quality you most like in a man?
Dan:
Intelligence.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Dan:
Intelligence.

What do you most value in your friends?
Dan:
I like all my friends for different reasons, so it’s hard to pick one quality I value most highly overall.

Who are your favorite writers?
Dan:
Mikhail Bulgakov, Tony Harrison, P. G. Wodehouse, Peter Cook, Tom Stoppard.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Dan:
The Master in The Master and Margarita.

Who are your heroes in real life?
Dan:
My parents. Tom Brady. Tom Lehrer.

What are your favorite names?
Dan:
Linus. Hannah. Joseph. Iggy.

What is it that you most dislike?
Dan:
People who are convinced that being rude and being straight-talking are the same thing. People who think that working in the entertainment industry means they can behave like entitled sociopaths. And small portions of food.

If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be?
Dan:
I have no idea. If I could come back as a person rather than a thing, I’d definitely prefer that.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be?
Dan:
I would like to come back as a question setter on Jeopardy!

How would you like to die?
Dan:
In a blaze of glory.

What is your motto? “Don’t be a d--k.”
