Daniel Radcliffe says Alan Rickman empowered him as actor, talks Oscars diversity
Daniel Radcliffe opened up about his Harry Potter costar, the late Alan Rickman, as well as his thoughts on the Oscars lack of diversity (he is an Academy voting member), at Friday's Sundance Film Festival world premiere of his new movie Swiss Army Man.
Daniel Radcliffe: “A lot of the older actors on those films had known me since I was very young, and so had Alan.”
“On the third film we had a lot of stuff to do together, and he just treated me like an actor. And the feeling of getting that respect from somebody who’s that much older and better than you really empowers you.”
Daniel Radcliffe on the Oscar Boycott: "It's the start of a conversation that feels like we shouldn't need anymore." https://t.co/VCw6k7aTFR
Dan: "I suppose in a way it's already been effective because there has been a reaction in terms of the Academy working on changing their policy," the Harry Potter star told me at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of his new indie Swiss Army Man (more on that later).
"It's the start of a conversation that feels like we shouldn't need anymore because particularly in this industry, we think of ourselves as being liberal [and] very progressive," he said. "We need to put our money where our mouth is."
More photos from the premiere, where Dan stood alongside costars Paul Dano and Mary Elizabeth Winstead at Park City, Utah, can be seen below.
Reviews for Swiss Army Man have not been kind - to the point that most of the audience walked out of the screening less than halfway through. A few first reviews can be read here, here and here.
I don't know how I feel about Daniel's beard buttt I love his kind words on Alan Rickman. I mean Daniel had a lot of time with him more than anyone <3. I wondered how he felt hearing about him pass. He must have been heart broken
