| | | Cheap HP DVDs to halt piracy
Warner Brothers are reportedly going to start selling the Harry Potter DVDs in China for less than three dollars in a bid to stop film piracy. Quote:
"We will offer consumers a better alternative to pirated discs because our products will feature content not yet available from the pirate market," Jim Cardwell, president of Warner Home Video, said.

It costs 25p to make a DVD companies like WB put well over a 500% mark up on their products, like all big capitalist corporations to make as much money as possible. Piracy is a good thing. It is a way for people to see things that they would not ordinarily and at the end of the day, most people purchase pirate copies to kill time between the cinema and retail release anyway. All the stuff about it funding orgainised crime and terrorism is for the most rubbish, 70% of piracy is committed by normal people for their friends.
I'm a film student, i want to make my living from the industry, i know this stuff, i do this stuff and i see nothing wrong with it. I wouldn't complain if people did it, in fact i would take a leaf out of Lloyd Kaufman's book and give it away on the internet if people asked nicely.
As far as buying proper copies, which i do, do i will look for and make sure that i get it at the cheapest possible price.

And their point is...?
As long as the movies are exclusively from that company that made it, I'll buy it. But if it's anime, then that's a different story, pirated or not.

Eventhough WB wont make the kind of profit they do here they will still make one. I really don't feel bad for a corporate giant losing money, really. Have to agree completely. I've never been to China, but I did come from the Philippines (that's like Southeast Asia to those who don't know where it is) and the standard of living is way - and I mean WAY - different than the US or the UK. I'm in the US now, and when I went back home several years ago, I was able to buy and do so many things with the little money I had (because of the rate exchange) and I was so surprised! Most people living there can't really afford the things I did or bought everyday while I was on vacation.
So for us, $3 may be really cheap (and I personally think it's unfair, because I would love it if they did that HERE, instead of $20 dvds), but like in the Philippines, that's around 165 pesos, and a lot of people would rather buy food than a dvd
And the big corporate loss, yeah, I could care less about that too. They're still making money!

$3 is an awesome price, but they're going to lose SO much money on it! It doesn't make much sense, with or without piracy.

Well, boohoo for them... I'm sure it'll be alright. At least, THEY still get some money out of it instead of completely losing out on pirated dvds, yeah? And I'm sure they won't sell it for only that much if they know they will lose a LOT of money....
