Post Cheap HP DVDs to halt piracy

Warner Brothers are reportedly going to start selling the Harry Potter DVDs in China for less than three dollars in a bid to stop film piracy.

Quote:
"We will offer consumers a better alternative to pirated discs because our products will feature content not yet available from the pirate market," Jim Cardwell, president of Warner Home Video, said.

I see the reasoning, but at that price people are likely to say "Well, it's only three dollars to WB - why shouldn't I copy it?"

Piracy has made it bad for almost every company. I have seen a few pirated movies and their quality sucks. But I bet China's pirated movies are better quality than over here. That sux how business have to compete with piraters.

i suppose that this plan could work. i would rather buy a real POA DVD for $3 instead of a pirated version [even though i don't have any pirated ones]

Ok granted piracy is bad and it takes away from commercial buisness; but I think that people in China are really poor anyways. If you can get a product cheaper than the actual product from a store, they would do it. Most of every thing i buy comes from China but that doesnt mean that the majority of their population is getting that revenue. $3.00 a DVD sounds cheap to us but to them it could still be really expensive or within their pirce range. Now I've never been to China and I don't know the actual truth to their society but from what I have seen in pictures and from who I have talked to it is not near the kind of place that we live in. Eventhough WB wont make the kind of profit they do here they will still make one. I really don't feel bad for a corporate giant losing money, really.

I don't care about the corporate giants not getting money, either, but I do like to have the real thing when I buy my media. I don't care if I can get a pirated version for $1 and the real version costs $20: I'm going to buy the real thing, because that's the way my values work. I value quality as well as quantity, and money, though I'm not bursting with it, is of little consequence to me in the long run, if it means the difference in my satisfaction. I hope that those cheaper prices bring down the problem, and people might be more willing to buy a commercial product at a lower price. I'm not saying that it could anywhere near bring the piracy down to almost nothing, but any less is an improvement, I suppose. :/

Hehehehe, crazy WB. So many logical flaws. But yay for DVDs being cheaper than pirated ones! I'm going to have to get my friend in China to bring me back one next term.

you know the pitiful thing that WB does not realise its that where I live, they sell all pirated DVD's for 10 dhs and that's exactly 3 dollars. tough luck dudes. piracy here will remain the same.

its really cheap!
here in turkey the dvds are really expansive! i went to a bookstore today and saw a pack of hp movies 1,2,3 and it was 99YTL, that is about 76 dollars! that is like one fifth of the money a worker gets paid every month here.. and when the pirate dvds are about 2 dollars, of course people tend to buy them! not that i do, but still.. i wish wb did something like that here!

I agree with piracy when it takes money out of the hands of huge multi-billion dollar corporations who set out to poo all over the little guy and it is safe to say that piracy is here to stay.

Talking

but when you think about it, wouldn't selling the 'real' dvd's for $3 still set WB back into a major loss with their sales, just as it was with piracy about, except for very meagre profits?
hmmm maybe it's just me but i get the feeling that WB are just trying to round up as much money as they can get their hands on by competing with the pirates, not trying to halt it....
piracy in my opinion, stills has the one up here unfortunately
grrr i hate piracy

edit: just re-reading that, i don't know if it makes total sense..

darn
