The Mexican director of the third Harry Potter film has called Hollywood movies worthless. Article:
Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron has called Hollywood movies worthless. "Hollywood is a machine, 90 per cent of whose product is garbage." said Cuaron, who also rejected being labeled as part of Hollywood, as he called on Latinos to support Latin American films.
This is what the article had to say: Quote: "Hollywood is a machine, 90 per cent of whose product is garbage," said Alfonso Cuaron, the producer credited with the success of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Hollywood makes "the world's worst cinema," he told reporters on Saturday.
Cuaron also rejected being labelled as part of Hollywood, after working on the third film based on the adventure books about the young magician Harry Potter written by JK Rowling.
"That distinction is as offensive and sad as saying that the (US) Drug Enforcement Administration certifies other countries for their cooperation against trafficking, when we are really talking about the number-one producer (of drugs) in the world," he said.
In Hollywood, even though there are some good things, "they make the worst cinema in the world," the Mexican director said.
And that "makes it a cultural crime to encourage Mexican filmmakers and those of other Latin America countries to produce films with the only goal of entering those markets.
"Why should one be proud of reaching Hollywood?" he asked.
He called on Latinos to support Latin American films.
"Enough of saying that Latin American films are not good."
Cuaron took two films to the recent Cannes film festival: The Assassination of Richard Nixon and Cronicas (Chronicles) by Ecuadoran director Sebastian Cordero. Wizard News |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Marcella Riddle Graduated | Kaplinski Rival Sorting Hat Machine Quote: "Hollywood is a machine, 90 per cent of whose product is garbage,\" Couldn't agree more ..."Intolerable Cruelty", "50 first dates", "Fast and the Furious"....the list is endless. They're good films but there's no moral or real originality to them. Like they're made purely for the profit, not the artistic flair or talent or for entertainment. Quote: \"Why should one be proud of reaching Hollywood?\" Yeah, you should be proud to represent your own country, not someone else's just because their industry has more money.
I think much the same can be said for British actors who move to Hollywood, completely deserting the British Film Industry which needs boosting so badly.

I couldn't agree more. I love movies but your right, people underestimate what other countries are actually capable of, and I think British movies are much more realistic. You take a punch you have a nose bleed, you get shot, you probably die or crawl around with your innards hanging out and blood on the pavement, and the gun was only shot once (sorry to be graphic).
You watch a hollywood movie, they have to unload twelve magazines before anyone is actually shot, and thats only in the leg and then the victim keeps running! LOL. I can totally see where Cuaron is coming from.
I really have alot of respect for Brad Pitt, he recognised this and played a fantastic part in Snatch because he loves British movies (was directed by Guy Ritchie), amazing movie but it is an 18!
Cuaron is very cool, I like this man because he is real, loyal and dedicated to making movies and not just money, and I pray he directs OOTP!

Yeah, think he was a little over-excited when he said 90% because I wouldn't say they were that bad, but I can see his point.

Maybe; but being such a great director and having done a tremendous job on a film that not many others could've done, I think he has the right to exaggerate. I just hope his ego doesn't inflate like Aunt Marge's body!

yeah i agree with that, but i don't think 90% of them are garbage--i mean some of them are, but not most. I think he did an excellent job on POA, but i think he overexaggerated a little. I think people should be proud of their own countries films, and well since I'm an American, I am proud of some of Hollywood's films--they're not all bad. that's why i dont like people being to quick to criticize them-i mean they are the world's leading film industry
i haven't really seen any British films made by a british company but i'd definitely by interested in it-i've always had a fasination of anything british for some reason. |
