FIRST we had Winnie the Pooh (Winnie Ille Pu). Then there was Paddington Bear (Ursus Nomine Paddington).

Now Latin lovers everywhere are hoping that a translation of the first Harry Potter novel - Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis - will cast a fresh spell on the nation’s youth and prompt new interest in the language.

In July, Bloomsbury will publish the new version of JK Rowling’s first book, which will almost certainly become the biggest work of fiction to be translated into a dead language for a century.

More than 200 million copies of the Harry Potter books have been sold in 200 countries, and the series has been widely credited with encouraging millions of youngsters to rediscover the written word.

Many Latin enthusiasts now hope that the translation can also revive an interest in a language that has been derided as elitist, irrelevant and boring, and which is struggling to assert itself in the crowded school curriculum.

I learn Latin in school, I'm in my second Latin year, and I have to say that it was the worst decision of my life 'cause it is just so boring and difficult.
But if Harry Potter is published in Latin, I think I would buy it...

I already know Spanish, and Latin it's close to it. Maybe it could bring latin back to life it's cool, all the spells are in latin anyway. I wish I had taken Latin in school, but unfortunately I didn't.

I'm in my second year of Latin too! But I don't think it's boring, I like it. It's difficult but I enjoy learning it.

Yeah I know, unfortunately, it's not offered at school! At least until college anyway. I guess I'll have to wait. Or I could always(in Harmione's words, or more accurately, Ron's words about Hermione) "When in doubt go to the library!"

hmm well latin is useful for careers such as medicine where many names of diseases and anatomy are in latin, so that it can be used universally by all countries.

i learned latin for 4 or 5 years and came out with a GCSE. im not very good at languages but i would have much perfered studying latin if the story was harry potter. however one other good thing about my latin studies was that i learnt several of the myths from that time, JK uses alot of roman and other mythology in her books.

Dominus et Domina Dursley, qui vivebant in aedibus Gestationis Ligustorum numero quattor hee hee! sounds lovely!

To speak Latin just ad silly letters on to the end - us.

"Hello-us my-us name-us is-us Christina-us!"

To the very dim that might sound like Latin when you read it aloud!
