Actor Kenneth Branagh will judge an award to find tomorrow’s top film-makers, it was announced today.
Harry Potter star Branagh will join a panel which includes Billy Elliot actor Jamie Bell and Cold Mountain’s Ray Winstone to select digital short films made by youngsters aged seven to 18.
Winners of the First Light Film Awards, which were launched last year, will be chosen from nine categories.
Nominated films include the story of triumph over Martians, a girl who cannot stop dancing and a boy blamed for the death of a class hamster.
The films will be selected from best live action drama/fiction, silent film, documentary, animation, comedy, horror, film made by under 12s, film made by over 13s and best screenplay.
Announcing the nominations, UK Film Council chief executive John Woodward said the awards would help nurture tomorrow’s talent.
He said: “The UK has produced some of the finest film-makers in the world, and if we are to have a successful UK film industry in the future then we need to be developing tomorrow’s talent today.
“Despite having little or no previous experience of film-making, young people across the UK have produced many extremely high quality films thanks to the First Light programme. These awards celebrate their achievements.”
The awards ceremony takes place at the Odeon West End in London’s Leicester Square on February 25.
