Basically, it's a day dedicated to Comic Relief. It's a charity. All money raised goes to good causes - 60% goes to Africa and 40% to those in the UK. Comedy is used to raise the funds and people pledge money via web or phone and hold sponsered events to raise cash.
It's called Red Nose Day because traditionally red noses are sold for £1 - that money also goes to the fund. They have a different design for each new Red Nose Day. They also sell T-Shirts and other merchandise which gives its profits to the appeal too.
