| | | Arthur Levine talks editing Potter The Arkansas Democrat Gazette has an interview with Arthur Levine who edits the Potter books for US publisher Scholastic. In it he discusses how British slang is translated for an American audience. Quote:
"I would never try to Americanize it," says Levine, but he does ask Rowling to clarify "purely British slang" so American readers get the right meaning, and he wants to make sure Americans can differentiate between British slang and Rowling’s magical inventions. "I would tell her when I don’t understand a phrase, or suggest changes of syntax to make things clear."
"She’s not a rigid person." He never forces changes with any author: "It’s up to them to take our close attention as it’s useful."
Quote:
"She has an overall plan, and she knows how it ends. But she still allows for some magic. Maybe when she reaches that end, she’ll change it." He’s fairly certain, he says, that she’ll finish with the seventh book, and then move on to writing something different. "I think she has left it wide open," he says. "She’s a woman of many talents."

That's cool. I hope he doesn't cut too much out! I'm glad he doesn't try to Americanize HP. I like to read the books in the proper context, although in the American versions I guess he translates the slang.

I hate it when people try changing something that is so wonderful. If you take out to much slang then it looses it's character. I think it should be left as it is.

I dont think HP should be changed at all. It should be exactly how JK Rowling writes it and thats that. And I really hope the last book is longer than HBP..JK has so much to clear up!
