| | | Arabic Harry Potter translations banned in Israel
Arabic translations of Harry Potter, which have been imported from Syria and Lebanon, have been banned in Israel due to a decree from 1939 which states that books cannot be imported from countries which Israel are at war with.
Arab-Israeli publisher Salah Abassi was told by authorities to stop importing books from those areas. The ban also includes Pinocchio and Arabic classics. Quote:
"The trade and industry ministry and treasury warned me that importing those books is illegal," said Abassi, who imported the books through Jordan.
Quote:
"If they were printed in Jordan or Egypt, which are friendly to Israel, I would lose no time in buying them there. Now the significance is that the Arabic reading public in Israel will not be able to enjoy the best literature," he said.

Poor Israel. Though I suppose if they really really really wanted to get the book they could just buy it out of country...but they'd have to be die-hard fans to want to do that...

Well, this law makes sense. I mean, you could not (and cant) get Cuban made stuff here in America due to ban on trade w/ Cuba. I do believe that Arabic copies will make their way into Isreal by other means. As long as Isreal remains "at war" with those stated countries, the ban would likely continue.

Poor Israel. It's a shame that they have that ban. Hopefully this ban will be lifted sometime in the near future.

As said above, the law does make sense but it is really a shame that such violence continues to ensue upon the countries of the Middle East. Perhaps they do need to read Harry Potter and try for peace and love, over war and anguish |

^ Well, I would say that the Cuban trade restrictions are a pointless leftover from the Cold War and should be abolished asap. Pretty ridiculous to still have them.
But I have another question:
What's with this decree from 1939? I thought the state of Israel didn't exist independently until, let's see... 1948.

What's with this decree from 1939? I thought the state of Israel didn't exist independently until, let's see... 1948. They were still a independent state since they had declared their independence from Egypt and Palestine and Lebanon. The United Nations didn't recognize them until 1948 tho.
Well that law says that they cant import books from countries they are warring with. Not that they couldn't import the books at all. So they could get the books from Kuwait and UAE and places like that,

Ministry? Not yet... ^_^ | FanFic Enthusiast Ok, I don't think we're poor at all becasue why would all the Isreali's want to read the transalation in Arabic when we have it in Hebrew already? Only about 10% or even less precentage of Israel are Aribs.
It makes prfectly sense that Israel will ban Arabic books and stuff if we're at war. Why would any country let their enemy bring stuff into their country?
Like in the Olympics, If I'm not mistaken we didn't let them get to Beijin from our, Israel's, airport. They had to go to Egjypt.
I'm sure the Aribs found ways to read the HP books, and besides a lot of the Aribs know some hebrew anyway!

There's a deep, VERY deep divide between the majority of Arabs and Israelis, always has been, and it's not going to go away soon. Such a shame.

this is really sad because it stops the poeple form Israel from reading different books. War shoul not be an impediment for humanity to learn and expadn their horizons

What is really sad is that the world is torn upside down and that we, as people, can't resolve our problems without wars....we're (or suppose to be) the thinkers...sad all the thing about wars and about the books, but they'll find a way to read them
