| | | An Irish Councillor denounces HBP
Councillor Roy Gillespie has asked Irish parents not to take their children to midnight release parties for ' Half-Blood Prince', referring to the fandom as a 'cult'. Quote:
Describing the specific time chosen for the launch as " suspicious", the DUP councillor said people would do better to buy a bible.
"These cults with their stories about witches are damaging, especially to young people who would be better off saying their prayers," said Mr Gillespie.
"I have two children and one granddaughter and I would not like to see her standing at midnight being told about witches and wizards.
"Children should be well tucked up in bed with their prayers said by that time," he said.

Ya know this is really getting old. They should just stop. Ya know the Bible and Jesus is sometimes called evil (not that im saying it is, because I am Catholic) and they get all huffy, but they can call something else evil...hypocritical?

Talia Rogers Department of Mysteries | Let's not forget that this is just the opinion of one man, not that of the Irish population at large. I think it is sad that someone who is supposed to be an authority figure and command respect can condemn something that might be singly responsible for inspiring a generation of young people to get excited about reading.
I was always taught that a person, especially those in a position of authority, have a responsibility to have at least a rudementary understanding of both sides of an issue before said person can render an opinion worth considering.
So maybe if nothing else he needs to consider the fact that without the Harry Potter series that at least some young Christians wouldn't posess the skill or ferver to read the bible.
Human nature is rarely so black or white, right or wrong. I'd be wary of anyone who thinks that anyone or anything is wholly good or wholly evil, that is just not how people are wired. We're all a mix of good and bad impulses and actions.

Ah but this is DUP. This is one of a brand of politicians who are unbelievably closed minded. The north is still devided over something as insignifigant as religion, when both are esssentially the same anyway.
meh..just ignore the idiots. Free speech means they can say what they want, even if it is complete rubbish.

Thats stupid;"suspicious" and "cult". Its a book! Cant people be fans?? Its a good thing that people are interested in something and if it just so happens to be Harry Potter then well so be it, and If fans are excited because something good is happening (the release of the sixrth book) then they should be alowed to celebrate.

I think that people react like that to Harry Potter because they know that there are going to be some extremists who will take the whole concept of Harry Potter out of context, like beleiving that there is such thing as hogwarts. People are just scared that their children will be obsessive. It is also a matter of uninformed views, they would only really know what the books are about if they read them.

Yes some may be so obsessive that they carry one of the books around with them every where in their bag just in case they get time to read. *raise's hand* And yes some me so obsessive that they paint their room in their fave school house color. *raise's hand again {slythein green if anyone ask}* But that doesn't make the fans a cult. He should just read the books and when he does I bet he'll like them. *runs off to read more of OotP again* |

Yes the books only teach us about witches and wizards. Maybe if the man in question opened the book he'd realize that there is is also lots of stuff about friendships, loyalty, bravery, fighting evil and growing stronger as a person. It's very unfortunate that many people rush to judgement and hold such high opinions of themselves that they feel the right to condesend others in their own personal choices. Plainly put this guy is a jerk!

I think that that Irish guy is an idiot. If he wants to ban it, he first needs to see both sides! It's not fair to ban something just because you've HEARD it's bad, you need to see it first!
P.S.- I thought Irish people were all, you know, OK with Hp!
