[img]http://www.snitchseeker.com/images/news/snitch_seeker_80.jpg' align='middle'> After Harry Potter … here are The Giants - Summary:
Writer gets six-figure sum for book film rights.
JK ROWLING may be about to be hit by a flying "bludger" as a Scottish writer aims to rival the success enjoyed by dramatisations of the Harry Potter books with adaptions of her own work, so the article from The Sunday Herald said. Article: Quote: JK ROWLING may be about to be hit by a flying “bludger” as a Scottish writer aims to rival the success enjoyed by dramatisations of the Harry Potter books with adaptions of her own work.
Julia Donaldson, from Bearsden in Glasgow, last week signed a six-figure film contract with Warner Bros and Heyday films, the team behind the hugely successful Harry Potter films, for her forthcoming novel, The Giants And The Joneses. With this level of big screen backing, Donaldson could be set to topple Rowling, much as a bludger knocks characters off their brooms in the Harry Potter series.
She has also been offered a British children’s television series deal for other books.
A cross between Jack and the Beanstalk and Gulliver’s Travels, The Giants And The Joneses tells of an inquisitive giantess called Jumbeelia who climbs down a beanstalk to Earth and kidnaps three “iggly” human children, a lawnmower and a sheep.
The brother and sisters, Stephen, Colette and Poppy, have to negotiate through the terrors of the supersized Groil world and an unthinking Groilish family in order to get home.
Published to tie in with Donaldson’s appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival next month, the book features its own language of Groilish and features a dictionary to translate strange words such as “bimplestonk”, which means beanstalk.
Donaldson has also been offered a 13-episode television deal for another series that she is writing, Princess Mirror-Belle, which tells the story of Ellen and her mirror double.
The girl, who is a princess in her own land but is assumed to be an imaginary friend, creates trouble every time she pops out of a mirror – and Ellen always gets the blame.
The television offer is from Novel Entertainment, which made a series based on the Horrid Henry books and produced pre-school hit, Fimbles, which was sold to 25 territories and shown on CBBC.
“It is all very exciting,” said Donaldson. “The film deal is a big thing, with some very serious money. They have offered a big proportion as the option fee, rather than just offering peanuts and collecting lots of projects.
“They seem very committed, and I have a consultation clause to comment on the first version of the screenplay. With Joanne Rowling, the producer and head of the company, David Heyman, said it wasn’t a case of her breathing down their necks, but they were keen to get it right and would avidly consult her.
“I have also just seen the television offer. Novel Entertainment have a good record and have lots of ideas already. ”
Donaldson, a former songwriter for Playschool who moved to Scotland 15 years ago, began writing the giant book shortly afterwards . When her agent sent proof copies to film agents, it was snapped up by Heyman – who spotted the potential of Harry Potter and recruited Daniel Radcliffe to play the title role from a London theatre audience.
The project has been sent to screenwriters, and it has yet to be decided whether the film will be based in the UK or America. Donaldson thinks the grandmother could be captured by Dame Judi Dench, while Richard Wilson could play curmudgeonly giant Throg.
Heyman said: “ This book offers all the ingredients for a truly inventive and original family film.”
A Heyday spokeswoman said the story offered a message of reconciliation when the two sides find a common language.
“After an awful period of flicks for 19 to 24-year-olds, studios now see that the best films are family films, such as Shrek 2 or Harry Potter, and this is what we would like to create,” she added.
Donaldson said the books appeared to be popular because of the gentle humanity of her characters . “The giants are not malevolent: they are like us, but just bigger, ” she said.
Donaldson will hold workshops at the Edinburgh Book Festival on August 21 and 27. Sunday Herald |

I dont think it will take over Harry Potter, because it doesnt sound as fun and magical as Harry Potter. Also, it is not as appealing to all age groups like Harry Potter. I'm not saying that it won't be a good book, its just that I dont think that it is appealing. It also doesn't sound interesting to me either.

Ok, I agree that that book doesn't really sound interesting... I mean I love the Harry Potter series because of the depth that the story has, it just pulls you in. You can't help fall in love with the HP world. As imaginative as the story is, it also has realism that reaches adults-teens-kids... any age can relate as Harry grows up. I myself will stick by JKR!! Harry Potter will always be #1 |

Even though i need to read the books to say they might be better than Harry Potter, it doesnt seem like they would be that good.

She can try, but she will never get what she wants.
I'm telling you. J.K Rowling is a rare gifted writer. She is one of a kind. It's not a every day thing when someone writes a story with Quidditch, Animagus, Marauders...etc. No one can't even come up with those names if it wasn't for J.K.
Already with 3 movies that attracted billions and billions of fan all around the world, and with 6th book comming out soon, the road is far - TOO FAR and IMPOSIBLE - for Mz. Julia Donaldson to catch up. HARRY POTTER FOREVER LIVES ON, ROCKING THE WORLD!!!! |

Hmm, I don't think J.K. will have to be ducking from any bludgers. She's on a WHOLE different mountain than The Giants and the Joneses will probably ever be.

I agree with you all completely there is NO WAY that she is gonna beat JK.....it is just impossible.....no beyond impossible.......i mean how many fans does JK have? billions all over the world and she thinks that she is gonna beat HP....it is not gonna happen...she has to be mentall to think she can..... I am with you on the whole eating the foot thing if that happens.....and since it never will happen i dont have to worry...well all i know is that HARRY POTTER IS WICKED AWESOME!!!! and i am stickin by JK 100%....
