| | | 600 Muggles attend Irish Potter auditions
We previously reported that an Irish broadcasting company, TG4, were holding auditions to find a child to be the voice of Harry Potter in an Irish-language version of ' Chamber of Secrets'. The Sunday Times in Ireland reports that 600 muggles turned up at the auditions.
Warner Brothers have given the broadcasting company permission to dub the second film in the series which will be called ' Harry Potter agus an Seomra Runda'. WB will also supervise the casting of actors to replace the voices of the original stars. Quote:
Siobhan ni Ghadhra, a Telegael producer, said: “Warner Brothers have the final say on which child we pick. It can be a young boy or a girl — after all, Bart Simpson’s voice is done by a woman. The applications so far have been 50/50 from boys and girls."
“Apart from finding Harry Potter, we will be keeping our eyes open for children who can play other parts in the film. Most of the roles will be filled from a pool of actors we’ve used before.”
Quote:
Ni Ghadhra said a native Irish speaker would not necessarily be chosen. “We’ve had kids from all over the country looking to audition; not just people from gaeltacht areas,” she said. “We are looking for someone who has confidence and personality. The child will have a lot of lines to read but they will have a lot of help from the director.”
The film will be broadcast by TG4 on Halloween this year. A documentary called 'Ce He Harry?' detailing the process of finding the actors and recording the Potter film into Irish, will be aired on the same day prior to the movie.

Well, I guess some people don't speak English Ireland. Maybe they just want to make a dubbed version for those who prefer Irish to English. There's no saying they couldn't do the same for Welsh though.

I hate it when they dub movies or anything into another language. They dubbed Harry Potter in Hindi (Indian language) and it sounds pathetic! They showed COS on POGO in Hindi. With no GOF sneak-preview, mind you...

It's so that the language doesn't die, but to someone who only did the mandatory three years (I kept on French) it does seem a bit pointless.
Then again, you could ask, "Why play Gaelic when you could play soccer or rugby?" and I'd hate to see Gaelic football die. Quote:

Nope, English has been the main language here for over a century: my grandmother grew up in the 40s and at school she was taught all in Irish, but spoke English at home.
I know government documents (passport forms and so on) are printed in both languages. There was controversy when Queen's Uni in Belfast wanted to do a bilingual student handbook - a bit pointless really, but I suppose they were trying to make the statement that Irish is important, too, you know? Some Unionists take it as a threat, and some try to push Ulster-Scots (which as far as I can tell is just a dialect, really, though I could be dead wrong there) the same way some nationalists push Irish.
I just wonder what dialect they'll use: I learned Donegal Irish and my grandmother, who grew up down south, could barely understand some of it.

That's kind of what I was wondering. I know they speak Gaelic, but don't most of them know how to speak English too? I think it would be pretty neat to watch it dubbed in Gaelic though

We do speak english but there's a few places that speak Irish. they know how to speak english aswell but they choose not to. As lauradonaghy explained it perfectly!! I learn Irish in school aswell as English. Im no good at it but you have to do it from primary up to the end of secondary school. but its not an irish school were you have to speak in Irish, we just have to learn it, so everyone speaks english all the time (exept in Irish class). I think its good because in sum places like Dublin, no-one speaks the Language so it will help cause Harry Potter is popular and it will get people interested. I think everyone shud be proud of there countries language and if somethink like this happens support it!!

Though I suppose up here you only see it spray-painted on walls or in areas where the kerbs are painted green white and gold. It's good to know at least bit of Irish, though, I find it interesting to work out what place names mean and the significance behind them. (Cos I'm sad that way.) And you don't need to talk like we're another species, people! |

My family ancestors are from Ireland, and I think it would be really neat to watch it in Irish. I hope you didn't take any offense to my last post, I wasn't trying to make it sound like they know english so they should watch it in english.

Then again, you could ask, "Why play Gaelic when you could play soccer or rugby?" and I'd hate to see Gaelic football die. I sort of failed Irish so I never took at at GCSE. I think that they only do Irish at Catholic schools in N.Ireland so thats why some people up here get to do it and others don't. I did it for the first three years, failed it and gave it up. I couldnt tell you a single word. All I can do is a prayer in Irish and thats it. As for the Catholic schools part, its political as you should know. There was no point in them teaching it to me if they wanted to preserve it. I agree with you on the sports agenda. I mean hurling isnt the same as hockey, and gaelic football isnt the same as football. I think its important that we should keep these games intact as it represents our culture. However watching tv shows in Irish is not really fun I can tell you. Sometimes you get some Irish dubbed Tv shows up here when there's nothing else on like on a sunday or something. I remember one time watching teletubbies in Irish. Usually its unbareable in English so imagine it in Irish. |

Not making the film, dubbing it. Just doing voice-overs; it's what they do for every single country that doesn't speak English or has more than one language. Why should Ireland be any different?
