More information on the rumours that filming for ' Order of the Phoenix' will move from Scotland to the Czech Republic, has emerged via The Herald. Scottish Screen, the agency charged with promoting Scotland as a film venue, have said that Scotland will lose the magic of Harry Potter and other major film productions unless ministers step in with a £1m film fund.
The film tax laws, which changed last year, are apparently partly to blame.
Scotland is unable to offer special tax breaks to film companies because its tax system is a reserved matter controlled from Westminster. Quote:
Claire Chapman, the head of production at Scottish Screen said, "My argument is that although [the fund will be used] on a film by film basis, there are also secondary and tertiary benefits."
"For example, it encourages tourism – people flock to see locations from films such as Rob Roy." She added: "We have heard that Harry Potter is going to the Czech Republic.
"So there is no doubt in my mind that if we had financial incentives available we could lure production here that would not otherwise come and would otherwise go somewhere else."
"It is something I feel we have to do . . . or we will continue to lose productions."
Scottish Screen are currently in talks with the executive over the fund, and it is hoped a decision will be made later this year.

You mean to tell me Harry Potter is going to be moved because of a million dollars? Either someone is being extremely cheap, or they just really don't want to film there, because he shouldn't be that difficult to come up with that money [industry wise] to keep HP there.

I wonder if she would... She certainly could afford to. I agree though, 1 million pounds doesn't sound like an awful lot to come up with to keep HP where it belongs...

I dunno, maybe I'm just not taking this seriously enough, but it sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt if nothing else. They're having issues over 2 million dollars when GoF was one of the most expensive film ever made? That just seems like a lot of BS to me. lol Although I suppose it doesn't hurt to voice one's opinion regardless.  | |

I thought that GoF claim was fradulant. It's the Government having the issue, or so I understand. Thing is, The Herald is very reliable so it's got to have credibility in its claims.

Agrees and they have a point untill a year or so ago there was a tax brake for foilming in scotland 9or Uk) but the loop hole was closed...

I'm pretty sure TLC reported it and hasn't changed it. That is if you mean about it being one of the most expensive movies ever made. And I don't doubt there aren't lies in this, I just think it's a bit of a publicity stunt. The same thing happened to Lost with Hawaii. When something is just that popular there seems to always be some sort of issue somewhere and then it gets resolved.
