Amazon has announced that they've taken over 1 million pre-orders for Deathly Hallows, however shareholders were told yesterday that despite this, the company won't be making a profit from the novel.
This is due to the $17 discount the site is offering, in conjunction with free shipping and a guaranteed on-time delivery. | |

Wow, no profit for Amazon? I'm surprised they haven't lifted a bit of the discount (to like, $10 or something), but I guess it shows they really care about the readers!

They may not see a profit from the novel itself but, the deep discount brings in new customers and those customers buy more stuff while they're there. So, while they won't see a profit from DH you can be sure they're making more money this quarter with the pre-order happening than they were in previous quarters.

They might not gain a profit directly from DH but they will see a profit from the customers other purchases due to the book. Kind of like a restaurant offering a free appetizer or dessert, they are making their money off the entree and drinks you purchase.

In the agreement between Amazon and customers, it says that whichever price is the absolute lowest for the book between the time that the customer preorders and the time that the book is shipped, is what the customer will pay. That means that if they raise the price of the book for everyone else, the people who preordered already are still going to pay the same amount.
