How do u create a spell? i dont recall Jo ever explaning that. I never really thought of spell creating. We only hear about certian spells, and the Ministry and the whole wizarding world is aware of all those spells. But Snape created a spell that nobody knows about. If you create a spell somehow do u have to register it at the ministry of magic or something? Is spell creating legal? But my biggest question is still How do u create a spell??

Its only my guess, but I think that usually people would not bother creating spells, and they probably have to be ministry approved. dont think it is totally illegal though, because snape probably would have not written them in his textbook if it was. as to creating spells, I guess he would use existing spells and mix them together, Like in COS, Harry uses the tickling spell "rictumsempra" which sounds very simelar to "sectumsempra" only one tickles and the other cuts into the person.

Well, spell invention is quite simple. You must find the goal you are trying to accomplish with your wand, then, you must come up with the incantation. The spells in the HP books are Latin. So for instance-- 'Sectumsempra'--Cut Forever.
Then, you must charge your spell. Focus all your magical energy into it....and it should work.

Really! oh wow, Severus is a genius though I doubt many wizards and witches could create spells like Severus did, and he did it when he was really young too!

I think you mix up alot of spells, Like You can mix A cutting Charm with Impediment Spell(or whatever it is). Thats how u might make a spell.

If it has something to do with ethier wand movement and/or incantation a first year could accidentaly create a spell while trying to do another, like Lockhart who ended up making (or accidentaly copying a spell) that made Harry's arm bones dissapear,


Imagine doing that in battle or firing that spell down the mouth of a basilisk (Do basilisks have bones?) fighting is made so much easier.


Thats probebly the easiest way to make a spell by altering,


Wand Movement,Incantation,Intent.


Afterall if you got the grasp of a spell (eg. Wingardiem Leviosa) you no longer need incantation,or can do it wandlessly therefore abandoning wand movement you rely of POWER and INTENT alone,


I belive INTENT is the key to magic in th PotterVerse.

^^^i agree. I think to get a spell into a text book or something you have to take it to the ministry. but i doubt it's illegal. if it was there's probably no way they would know.

I dont know. I have been wondering that ever since i read HBP. IF its just a matter of mixing 2 spells together, then couldnt anyone do it? Wouldnt tht get really confusing? Hmm...

I'm sure new spell creations do have to be registered by the Ministry. However, Sectumsempra and the like are dark spells, and of course they wouldn't be Ministry-approved. So of course he wouldn't register them. Sort of like the Marauders not being registered animagi.

On the subject of creating a spell, I would think it would be something like creating a new chemical equation to make an entirely new substance. It would require a lot of thought, and knowledge of Latin to create the root of the word, and then...this is where I am out of my element. I have no idea after that.

hermione says that its dangerous because its not ministry approved. maybe to create one you just wave your wad around, say some funny words and see what happens?

Isn't it Fudge who said we don't run around arresting everyone who accidently does something, could you imagine all the magical spells created by children because they get a wand and just start waving it around all willy nilly. I mean if they got angry and were thinking hurtful thoughts and started shaking their wand at someone I'm sure something bad would happen.

Most of the spells in Harry Potter are in Latin. So, it is very easy to go look up in a dictionary and read the American/British meaning, then use it.

EXAMPLE: Duo Inflictum. "Duo" means two in Latin, with "Inflictum" which means Inflict, could mean "Hit twice" or "Hit two."
