Here's basically just the letter back to Alex.

I checked the HP Lexicon and 6th year should be 1997... which means that Sept 1 came on a Monday, and Olivia still has to get through Thursday & Friday before her Animagus lesson. Oh well, I think I can fit some stuff in about the teacher then.

Well, I’ve only been here a few days but the doxy dung has hit the proverbial fan. The local newspaper here ran an article on my dad and it seems like everyone at school has read it. Well, there’s no news like bad news, and it seems to spread the fastest. Oh well, it’s not so bad. There was this one guy who was ticked off because my dad killed 14 Pure-Bloods. You should have seen it… but then, he was also ticked off when I didn’t run screaming when he told me one of my roommates is a Muggle-Born (he used the not-so-nice term for it). Anyway, it’s nothing I can’t handle, although I wish you were here so I’d at least have one person who believes me when I say my father did nothing wrong. I don’t think my Uncle really believes me.



Speaking of my Uncle, I will ask him if I can go home for Christmas, but I’m not sure what he’ll say. I’m going to have to wait until he’s in a really good mood… if he ever has a really good mood… and then ask him. He really doesn’t like the idea of me being back there though, so I’ll have to come up with a great excuse/reason why he should let me go.



It’s great that your little brother is at Novus too, you can watch out for him and keep him out of trouble. Or encourage him to get into trouble, either way. With both of you at Novus now, and your mom being a witch, your dad’s got to come around eventually to the idea of the magical world. He is, after all, sort of outnumbered now.



Oh! There’s a new teacher here. Not just for me. Apparently the last Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher quit and there’s a new one this year. Anyway, she’s Canadian, like me. Does the name Annabella Stone sound familiar to you? I feel like I’ve heard the name before and she looks so familiar, but I can’t place her. I’m sure I’ll figure it out before you write back, but just in case I don’t, it’ll be good to have two brains thinking about it.

Olivia woke early the next day and quietly got dressed and left for the common room before any of the other girls in her dorm had woken up. At least I know I won’t run into Hermione downstairs. Not unless she can be in two places at once.

Olivia would have walked right through the common room, past the fire that shouldn’t have been on this early in the morning, and up to the owlry, but a movement in the chair by the fire caught her attention. She cautiously stepped forward and saw Harry there with a photo album. There was a redness around his eyes that suggest he might have been crying.

“You okay, Harry?”

He softly shut the photo album. “I’m fine. Just couldn’t sleep.”

Olivia’s brow furrowed. “Couldn’t sleep? You don’t mean you’ve been down here all night?”

Harry looked at her defiantly. “I’m fine…I’m going up to get dressed.” He stood up and exited towards the boys’ dormitory.

Olivia sighed and continued out the portrait hole. There’s something wrong with him. I know it.

The owl she had used before hooted at her and flew to a higher branch.

Olivia decided to try a different tactic. “Who among you is brave enough to take on a great quest?”

To her delight several owls flew closer to her, as if to hear what she had to say. “This letter is to go to a very important person in the tallest tower in a castle called Novus.”

Some owls flew away but three or four stayed. “Which of you noble birds will take this letter to Alex Matheson in the North Tower of Novus Aquila Academy?”

One owl moved closer with it’s chest puffed out. Olivia tied the letter to the owl’s foot. “By the way, Novus is in America.”

Olivia could swear the owl’s eyes went wide. “He’ll feed you and give you something to drink when you get there, I promise.”

The owl took flight and Olivia made her way back downstairs, planning to go to breakfast.

She was walking down the Defense Against the Dark Arts corridor when someone called her name. Olivia doubled back to see her uncle and Professor Stone standing in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. “Hello, Professor Snape.” Olivia quietly congratulated herself on not calling him ‘uncle’.

“What are you doing in this area Olivia? Where did you just come from?”

“I was in the owlry. I had to send a letter.”

“I thought you already wrote to your friend Alex.”

“I did. He wrote back. I had to reply… you wouldn’t want me to be rude, would you?”

Severus looked sternly at his niece. “You should have consulted me first… in fact, I’m not sure it was a good idea to let you write to him in the first place.”

Olivia clenched her fists and reminded herself that there was another teacher present and she should not lose her temper. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, uncle, but I am sixteen years old. I’m nearly an adult by magical standards and I have never had to ‘consult’ with someone before writing a letter to my best friend.”

Severus’s jaw tightened slightly. “You are not an adult yet, and, while you are under my care, you will do as I say, including asking my permission before you send a letter off.”

Olivia stamped her foot. “You can’t do that! You’ve already taken me away from everything I know and put me here! I hate it here! I hate Hogwarts and I hate you!”

Olivia turned towards the door and ran into the hallway, trying to keep back tears.

She ran for quite a while and didn’t stop until she found herself in the little room she had found on her first full day at Hogwarts. I hate this! He can’t keep me from everything! He can’t keep me from Alex! I’m just gonna stay in here until he changes his mind. Or maybe I’ll run away.

Olivia was sobbing into her arm, so she didn’t hear footsteps approaching, and didn’t notice anyone was in the room until a strong hand was placed on her shoulder.

She resisted, pushing her head against her arm. “Go away.”

“Olivia.”

She was not surprised to hear her uncle, but the concern in his voice made her look up. “I want… to go home. I … don’t like it here!” She spoke through her sobs.

Severus crouched down in front of Olivia and put his hand on her shoulder in what was supposed to be a comforting manor.

Olivia leaned forward and clung to her uncle, crying.

“Olivia… I don’t know what to say.” Severus put a protective hand on her back. “I know that this is hard for you. You must believe me when I say I have your best interests in mind. You must know that you are still a suspect in… the deaths, and your father wanted you to be as far away from it as possible.”

Olivia looked up at her uncle. “He… didn’t do anything wrong. They were bad men, Uncle Severus. They were going to hurt a lot of people.” Olivia felt a little shocked that she had told her uncle that much.

“What do you mean?”

Olivia bit her lip. He deserves to know. Olivia did a quick silencing charm on the room to make it soundproof. “Uncle, I’ll tell you. I can tell you everything… but… but please don’t turn me in. My dad wanted me safe. You know that.”

Severus nodded. “Yes. I know that. I do not want to see you in a prison anymore than your father does.”

Olivia was a little hesitant. He didn’t say he wouldn’t turn me in… He deserves to know. Olivia sighed. “You might want to sit down.”

Severus sat down with his legs crossed uncomfortably.

Olivia paced back and forth. “It started when my mom left us. She eventually married a Muggle… a lawyer, I think… anyway, Dad was so upset that he joined one of those anti-Muggle groups… they had a really stupid name Death… Dead… well, Death or Dead something… Dad only mentioned their name once. Anyway he got over Mom pretty quick… I like to think it was because he was having so much fun with me… but it could have been that he had to take care of me. He kept going to the meetings; he would actually get called off in the middle of the night… He used to apparate into my bedroom to make sure I was asleep and then go off. He’d usually return by breakfast but I always knew when he’d been away. One day he sat down at the breakfast table… it was just after I got my letter for Novus… and told me about the meetings he was going to, and some of the things they did there… not everything… but enough to scare me… and he told me that they planned to do worse things… much worse… and he didn’t want to be a part of it anymore… that he wanted to leave… but he couldn’t… he was afraid. He said he’d have to do something completely irrational… some way to take some of them out and keep himself safe. I… didn’t really know what he meant. I was only eleven, after all. But I tried to comfort him, tried to support him… and I promised I’d help him… that somehow I would.”

Olivia stopped to wipe the tears from her face. “In my fourth year my dad came up with a plan. He told me about it during Christmas Holiday… I really actually thought he was mad… if he got caught… they’d torture him… torture him, then kill him… and leave his body to rot somewhere… but he said he had to try… and he made sure… That I was ‘pure’… he did a spell… and then when he was sure he took my hair… it was for a potion… a poison… he found in an old book… and he was sure he could make them drink it… said he’d drink it himself if he had to. I cried, but I let him cut my hair… he sealed it magically and put in on a shelf with his other potion supplies. I went back to school and he didn’t talk about it again. I actually thought he might have forgotten about it until I heard that he’d been arrested. You don’t know what they were going to do, Uncle, what they had done… it was just horrible… maybe they didn’t deserve to die the way they did… but they’d done worse… believe me.”

Olivia looked over at her uncle.

Severus was lost in thought as he subconsciously ran his hand over his left arm. “The article said they died of poison. What aren’t you telling me Olivia?”

Olivia bit her lip. “The poison… the potion… boiled their organs from the inside… they died in agony.”

Severus closed his eyes. “And you knew this would happen?”

Olivia paused, knowing that having such information made her an accessory to murder. “He showed me the book, Uncle. You don’t know what they did… and just because people were Muggles… they couldn’t even defend themselves… not like you or me. They tortured them because they were different.”

Severus stood and pulled Olivia into a hug. “I know you did what you thought was right. It is my duty to keep you safe. You’ll tell no one else of this.”

“Well, duh.”

Severus chuckled a little. “I’ll understand if you don’t want to go to your classes today, but I must ask that you stay in Gryffindor Tower if that is the case. I have to teach my first class, I’m sorry.”

Olivia looked up, partly in shock at the apology, and watched as her uncle swept out of the room. She waited a few moments and then preformed the ‘sicco cursim’ charm and made her way back to Gryffindor Tower.
