They were noted as being Pure-Bloods. He wouldn't have cared if they were Muggles. Actually, had they been Muggles or Muggle-borns it might have made him think that Olivia wasn't so bad after all. But the big thing there was that they were Pure-Bloods.

By the end of class, Olivia had resolved to ask Professor McGonagall to teach her how to become an animagus, but she first had to get through her Charms class.
She spoke to no one on the way to her second class but had a hard time actually ignoring the stares and whispers as she walked by groups of students. At least at Novus I had Alex who believed me. Who didn’t judge me. At least at Novus I was well established at the school. I could kick Uncle Severus for bringing me here.

She took her seat closest to the door this time and barely noticed when Harry, Hermione, and Ron sat near her. Olivia worked in relative silence, only speaking to say an incantation, and had to force her mind on the lesson at hand.

When Charms had finally ended, Olivia was the first out of the door and didn’t even wait for the ‘trio’ who seemed to want to talk to her. She entered the great hall and hovered around the staff table until Professor McGonagall showed up.

“Professor, may I speak with you for a moment?”

“Yes, of course.” The stern looking woman led Olivia into a side room.

Olivia bit her lip, suddenly nervous. “Er… uh, you’re an animagus, right?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Good. Okay, I was wondering if…would you be able to teach me… how to become one? I’d really like to learn.”

Professor McGonagall sort of sighed and sat down in a chair. “Becoming an animagus is not easy Olivia. It takes a lot of concentration and dedication. And it can be dangerous. You seem to have a lot of things going on right now. Do you believe you could handle another undertaking?”

Olivia looked at her hands for a moment, and then looked up with a determined look on her face. “Once I set my mind to something, I usually accomplish it. You must have seen my OWL marks for Transfiguration. I can do this. I want to do this. Anytime that you have time to teach me, I’m willing to learn.”

“I just don’t know…”

“Or else I’ll learn on my own.”

Professor McGonagall stood up. “Now, that is very dangerous.”

“Then teach me. Make sure I don’t make mistakes.”

The stern woman considered for a moment. “Alright. You are to meet me in my office at exactly 10AM Saturday morning. There, we will begin.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Olivia had a bit of a smile on her face as she entered the great hall again.

Uh uh so McGonagall is going to help her! Interesting!

Olivia had planned on just grabbing a bit of food and going somewhere to eat by herself. She was just reaching for some bread from the Gryffindor table when an owl swooped towards her with a letter tied to his feet. After a moment Olivia recognized the bird as the one she had sent to Alex. She smiled as she removed the letter and gave the tired looking owl some food and something to drink.

Olivia tentatively tore open the envelope and was happy to see the familiar hand writing of her best friend. As she started reading the owl flew off again. I’ll just get a different owl to reply. She munched on a piece of bread as she started reading over Alex’s letter.

Wow, do I miss you. It’s majorly boring here without you. Ah, the ‘Horklump Incident’. Professor Brown is still skittish around me. I think if we hadn’t got the Devil’s Snare involved she would have been fine. But honestly, the little buggers deserved to be squeezed after what they did to us. You can’t tell me that those ‘Wiry black bristles’ weren’t deliberately trying to puncture us. I was there. Anyway, it’s not like we would have actually let them die… we were just having a bit of fun. Just be careful with your new Herbology Professor if she does know about it though. She’ll be looking for a reason to give you detention.

On to more serious things. I spoke to your father recently, as he mentioned to you. I wish I could talk to you and let you know exactly what he said but the floo network isn’t secure and I’m afraid of my letter being intercepted. I think the Ministry may think I do have something to do with the 14 deaths, although I’d never actually even met your father until he got arrested. So much for getting serious. Anything I want to say, I’m almost sure I can’t for fear of discovery. Well, I’ll keep the information locked up tight in my cranium. Maybe you can convince your Uncle to let you come see me at Christmas vacation? Or vice versa?

By the way, did I mention my little brother joined Novus this year? My father went out for cigarettes when he found out. My mom said he returned just after we left and that everything’s fine. I feel sorry for her. He really doesn’t understand the Magical world, but at least he’s stopped referring to me as “that boy”. He might actually be warming up to me.

Olivia folded up the letter again. I wish his father would “go out for cigarettes” and never return. And I really wish he could have just said what my father told him. Now that’ll be on my mind until Christmas.

“Hullo, Olivia.”

Olivia turned around to see Harry standing behind her nervously. “Hi Harry, how’s it going.”

He quickly sat down. “Better than for you, it seems. Do you want to come watch me… our quidditch practice tonight? Hermione’s going and you’ll be able to avoid the common room.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Great.” He got up and left the great hall.

I wonder what that was all about?

Just to warn you guys, this post is a little longer than usual. I've had this teacher in my head for months and I couldn't pass up the opertunity to write her in.

When Olivia walked into her Defense Against the Dark Arts she was almost surprised that the whispers in class had nothing to do with her. She made her way over to Harry, Hermione and Ron.

“What’s up? Where’s the teacher?”

Hermione answered, worried. “I don’t know. There wasn’t a new teacher at the staff table this year. Maybe they haven’t found one?”

“Why would they have to find a new one? Where’s your teacher from last year?”

The trio looked at each other and Hermione seemed as if she was about to explain when a tall dark haired woman entered the class with a stack of papers in her arms.

“Everyone take your seats. I’m sorry I’m late.”

Olivia wasn’t the only one to notice that this woman did not have a accent usually associated with this part of the world.

A timid looking Hufflepuff lifted up his hand. “Excuse me… er Professor? Are you an American?”

The teacher looked up slightly annoyed. “No, I’m Canadian. Though I fail to see what that has to do with anything. Everyone take your seats and get out some parchment. I will be dictating the class rules in just a moment.”

Hermione and Ron sat together so Olivia cautiously took the seat beside Harry and pulled out some parchment and a Quill.

While she waited for everyone else to get out their supplies, Olivia glanced over at the teacher who seemed to be trying to calm herself and act less flustered. She’s so pretty.

The professor had dark raven hair, much like Olivia’s own, and a milky complexion that contrasted sharply with her rich black robes. She can’t be much more than twenty five.

“Okay, enough chatter now. I hope you are all comfortable where you’re sitting because you’ll be sitting there for the rest of term. This,” The Professor held up a piece of parchment with several boxes drawn on it. “Is a seating plan. As you can see, it is currently filling in all your names in the squares that coincide with where you are sitting. This will allow me to skip the roll call at the beginning of class and I’ll be able to determine if someone is absent or sitting where they ought not to be.”

Olivia looked sideways. I think sitting beside Harry for the term would be okay. She smiled and then looked up at the teacher who was still talking.

“For your general information, my name is Annabella Stone. You will address me as ‘Professor Stone’ or ‘Miss Stone’, or simply ‘Professor’ I will not answer to or tolerate being called any other name while I reside here.”

The Hufflepuff from earlier raised his hand again. “‘Miss Stone’? Does that mean you’re single?”

Professor Stone stopped what she was about to say to stare down at the Hufflepuff who ducked lower in his chair. “Well, like my nationality, I fail to see what it has to do with anything… but I am not married or seriously involved. I have quite a few things to get through today. Shall I continue or are you more interested in my personal life?”

Several students in the class giggled and the Hufflepuff boy was blushing, although he did seem like he wanted to ask more questions about who this strange teacher was.

“I really hope there will be no more interruptions. Now, does everyone have their parchment ready?” Several people nodded. “Good. Now, the first rule is you must raise your hand if you wish to ask a question. I will not tolerate any ‘talking out of turn’. I have been informed of the ‘points’ system at this school and I will deduct points, at my discretion, for speaking out of turn and general rudeness.” The class was furiously writing notes as she talked. “The second rule is that you must always be on time. I know I have not made the best example today, so lets use this to judge: When I enter the classroom and shut the door, the class is considered started. If you arrive after the door has been shut, you are considered late and might as well not join my class. If you are going to arrive late to my class, do so in a quiet and courteous manner. Do not announce your late arrival or start giving excuses. If you are late and disturb my class you will lose house points and have detention with me.”

Professor Stone’s voice and the quiet scratching of quills on parchment were the only sounds in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom for the next forty minutes.

Basically, those were the rules: put your hand up, don’t be late, and stay in your assigned seats.

The stack of papers Professor Stone had brought turned out to be copies of the lesson plan for the year.

Olivia scanned over her copy while keeping her eye on the new Professor. There’s something familiar about her. “Oh, we’re going to get to do Patronus this year.”

Harry glanced at the paper for a moment. “I know how to do one… I can help you if you want.”

Olivia smiled at him. “Thanks, that’d be nice.”

The class ended a few minutes later and Olivia followed Hermione to the Quidditch pitch.

Er... only in the way that all Pure-Blood witches/wizards are related (cousins mostly). She does have a Snape-like quality though. I really like this teacher... I hope I do her justice in the story.

The rain had subsided to a light drizzle and Olivia was beginning to think the sun might actually come out today. “So, what do you think about Miss Stone?”

Hermione looked thoughtful for a moment. “We’ve never had a teacher from another country before. I think it might be interesting. She’s seems a little strict though.”

“She’s probably new at the whole teaching thing. I imagine she’s strict because she doesn’t want the students to walk all over her. She’s very pretty.”

Hermione nodded as she led the way up to the Quidditch stands. “Harry and Ron will be out in a few minutes, they have to change into their Quidditch robes first.”

“Will the rest of the team be here?”

“No, it’s not an official practice.”

“Then why are they going to be wearing their Quidditch robes?”

Hermione thought for a moment. “Less wind resistance?”

“Er… okay. You know, I can’t help thinking I’ve seen Miss Stone somewhere before. And that name ‘Annabella Stone’, it sounds so familiar.” Olivia furrowed her brow as she tried to think where she may have seen the mysterious teacher before.

“Well, I’ve never heard of her. I’m sure she’s a good teacher though, if Dumbledore picked her.”

“What was the teacher like last year… for Defense Against the Dark Arts?”

“Er…” Hermione paused as they watched Harry and Ron rise up on broomsticks. “She was assigned by the Ministry of Magic… she was awful. She taught us theory all year… no practical… and she even used the Cruciatus Curse on Harry.”

Olivia gasped. “That’s horrible! I hope she got sacked.”

“Well, she sort of quit actually.”

Olivia shook her head, watching Harry zoom across the field with the Quaffle. “Using the Cruciatus Curse on a student, that should have got her arrested. Isn’t it illegal here anyway? The Cruciatus Curse I mean. I thought it was one of the ‘Unforgivable Curses’.”

“It is illegal. I don’t really know why she wasn’t arrested. Maybe it was because she went mad?”

Olivia pulled her eyes from the pitch to look at Hermione. “What made her go mad? Not using the curse, I’m sure?”

“No… It… uh has to do with some Centaurs she ran into.”

“Oh.” Olivia turned back to the pitch. Olivia had only met a Centaur once, when she was four, but she can see how they could make someone go mad. “Isn’t Harry a Seeker?”

“What?” Hermione looked out at the pitch. “Oh, yes, he is.”

“What is he doing with a Quaffle then?”

“Helping Ron practice, I expect.”

“Not that he needs it. Either Harry’s a really lousy Chaser or Ron’s really good at defending those hoops.”

Hermione smiled. “Ron’s great as Keeper. You should have seen him last year.”

Olivia nodded. “Great, I’d hate to think Harry is a bad Chaser… even if that isn’t the position he normally plays."
