After about ten minutes, Olivia thought that it might be safe to leave the living room. Besides, I’m hungry… he can’t starve me. She cautiously made her way past the dining room and into the kitchen. She could feel her uncle’s penetrating glare but refused to look at him.

“So,”

Albus Dumbledore’s voice made her jump and look around at him. “Yes?”

“From what I’ve seen of your school record, you’re a very good student. You’ve gotten very impressive results on your OWLs and you’ve only been in trouble a few times.”

Severus made a noise into his tea that seemed to suggest that he didn’t believe that at all.

Olivia wanted nothing more than to ensure her uncle that she’d broke the rules loads of times but only got caught a few. She looked over at Albus Dumbledore and he seemed to be waiting for her to say something. “Well… er… yes, I had to get quite a few OWLs, I expected to be still competing with my best friend, Alex, at Novus Aquila Academy, and I couldn’t do that if I wasn’t in the same classes.”

“Well, a little friendly competition can’t hurt.”

Olivia’s eyes lit up. “Exactly, and competing with Alex is the main reason my marks are so high… I don’t know if I could do as well away from him.”

Severus Snape put his tea down calmly. “You will be going to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Period. You are not going back to Canada or the United States.”

Olivia narrowed her eyes at him then busied herself with making a sandwich for lunch.

Albus Dumbledore prattled on at the table. “Yes, well, if I remember correctly there was an ‘Alex’ present each time you got in trouble. Perhaps it is a good thing you will be spending some time away from him.”

Olivia buttered her bread while mentally flipping her uncle the bird.

“Now, I thought it would be best for all concerned if you came in with the first years at start of term. You will need to be sorted and this will be the most practical way for all parties involved.”

Olivia turned around. “Sorted? What do you mean sorted?” What am I? A jelly bean?

Severus decided to join the conversation. “There are four houses at Hogwarts, each favoring certain students, they are: Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. The sorting hat decides which one you belong to.”

Olivia arched her eyebrow. You’ve got to be kidding me. “A hat decides? Dad was in Slytherin, wasn’t he? Just put me in there.” She turned back around to finish making her sandwich.

Albus Dumbledore’s voice droned on. “The sorting hat decides which house you belong to. All Hogwarts students must go through the ceremony, and, as I said, it would be most practical if you are with the first years.”

I guess I haven’t made it clear I don’t want to be a Hogwarts student. Olivia moodily ate her sandwich in silence.

After lunch Albus Dumbledore took a look at the spell that had allowed Olivia to do magic and chuckled merrily. “It’s a simple word association spell. The words here mean nothing. How it works is the witch or wizard writes down the proper spell then enchants the parchment so that similar words, in either spelling or meaning, replace them. The witch or wizard then gives the parchment to someone else to read. The second witch or wizard reads it, assumes it’s just nonsense, and usually don’t even know that a spell has been cast.”
Severus stood with his arms crossed and his lips drawn in a fine line as he listened to Dumbledore’s explanation. “Yes, I’m well aware of how a word association spell works. Just find out the original spell so I can reverse it.”

Olivia narrowed her eyes at her uncle. “Reverse it? If what my father says is true, than your forte is potion making, not wand waving, are you sure you could reverse it?”

Severus stalked closer to Olivia. “I assure you I will reverse it, and you will not do any more magic for the entire summer. You will not touch a cauldron or read a spell book or get within five feet of a broom stick. Now, go in the living room and be quiet as I work this out.”

Olivia trudged into the living room but wasn’t able to sulk quite yet. Her uncle was about three steps behind her the entire way.

Olivia rounded on him. “Can I help you?”

“Your wand. Give it to me.” He held out his hand and waited for her response.

“No. No! You won’t take it! I won’t let you. You can’t break it! I haven’t done anything wrong!” Olivia backed up towards the couch, keeping between her uncle and her duffle bag.

Severus’ voice dropped in tone so that it was little more than a whisper. “I won’t break it, but I won’t have you breaking the law in my house. Give me your wand.”

Olivia bit her lip. “You swear you won’t break it?”

Severus gave a wry smile. “On my honor.”

Dad wouldn’t stand for this. Olivia sighed and turned around. She fished her wand out of her bag and set it on the coffee table. Olivia stubbornly looked away but glanced back after her uncle had left. How could he take my wand away? Just how? She turned and buried her face into the cushions of the couch.

Olivia had no choice but to do things the muggle way for the next few weeks. Her uncle barely left the apartment and kept hunched over stacks of papers that were arriving by owl every day. What are those papers?
Before Olivia really knew it, it was August 28. She was just rolling over on the couch, considering getting up, when she saw her uncle’s head floating above her. She cleared her vision and Severus Snape’s body joined the sneering cranium above. Why is he in full robes this early in the morning?

“Get up. We’re going to get your things today.” Severus walked out of Olivia’s eye line.

“What things?” Olivia sat up groggily and stared at her uncle, confused.

Severus looked back. Olivia could have sworn he actually rolled his eyes. “Your school things. Now get dressed and don’t dawdle.”

School, ick. Olivia had long ago stopped trying to convince her uncle to let her go back to Novus Aquila but she still was not looking forward to going to Hogwarts.

Olivia ambled into the bathroom and changed into her robes and brushed her teeth. She walked back into the living room where her uncle was impatiently waiting by the fireplace with a bowl of floo powder in his hand.

Olivia wined. “Do we have to go by floo powder? Couldn’t we go another way? Where are we going any way?”

Severus held out the bowl and his niece took some of the fine powder, still pouting. “Diagon Ally. Go.”

Olivia stepped into the fireplace and gave her uncle a dirty look before closing her eyes and saying “Diagon Ally.”



Olivia got out of the grate and waited for her uncle to join her. Despite being woken up so early and the impending doom of a new school, she found herself curious about the shops and eager to take a look at everything there.

Severus came through the gate a moment later and quickly did a scorgify charm on himself and Olivia to remove the soot they had collected on their way there.

“Thank you.”

“This way.” Severus led Olivia into Madam Malkin’s and stood around looking irritated while she was being fitted.

“I could have come alone, you know. And I don’t really need new robes. I’m sure my Novus ones would do fine… they are black after all.”

“I won’t have my niece standing out for not having the proper uniform.”

That was almost sweet.

After they were done at Madam Malkin’s Severus rushed Olivia from store to store getting her school supplies.

The were walking back to the grate, loaded down with supplies, when Olivia spotted Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor. “Uncle Severus, I’m hungry. Can we stop and eat?” She looked at him pleadingly.

Severus looked over at the ice cream shop. “That’s not food. We’ll eat when we get home.” Severus turned back around and nearly bumped into a blond haired boy.

“Watch where you’re… Uh… er hello Professor Snape, what are you doing in Diagon Ally?”

Severus looked down. “Malfoy.”

Olivia cleared her throat. “Uncle?”

The boy looked over at Olivia with keen interest. “Did you say ‘uncle’?”

Severus cut off Olivia’s reply. “Yes, this is my niece, Olivia. Olivia, this is Draco Malfoy. He’s in Slytherin at Hogwarts.”

Maybe Hogwarts won’t be so bad after all… he’s no Alex though. Olivia put on her best smile and put her hand out to shake his. “Nice to meet you.”

Olivia giggled when Draco lifted her hand to his mouth and said. “My pleasure.”

Draco took a look at the ice cream shop and then back at Olivia. “Would you like to join me for a Sundae?”

Olivia looked pleadingly at her uncle.

Severus sighed. “Give me those.” He took the packages from Olivia and passed her a pouch of money. “Be home by dinner time”

Olivia beamed. “I will.”

Olivia and Draco ordered their Sundaes and sat outside the Ice cream parlor watching the people pass by and occasionally speaking to one another.
“So, are you going to be coming to Hogwarts this year?” Draco lazily ladled some ice cream into his mouth.

Olivia sighed. “So they tell me. What’s it like there?”

Draco shrugged. “It’s not bad. Some real dunderheads there, though. You’ll want to be sorted into Slytherin of course… or have you already been sorted?”

Olivia made a face. “No, I have to go with the first years… I don’t know why they can’t just put me in Slytherin. Anyone in my family, that I know of, who’s gone to Hogwarts has been in Slytherin, it’s obvious I’ll be sorted there, why must they make it so difficult?”

Draco sort of grinned. “Well you really want to be in Slytherin, the other houses are full of idiots, especially Gryffindor...”

Draco went on about why Slytherin was best and how horrible the other houses were and about house points and Quidditch, but Olivia sort of tuned him out. Like I care about inter school rivalry.

Draco was just bragging about how he’s one of the best seekers Hogwarts has ever seen when Olivia interrupted him. “So, what are the teachers like then? Other than my uncle of course.”

This seemed to be a subject Draco would rather avoid. “Er… well they teach. Nothing really remarkable about them. As I was saying, it was Slytherin versus Gryffindor…”

Olivia tuned him out again. Guess I’ll have to find out about the teachers myself.

Olivia was almost happy to say goodbye to Draco at the grate. He is cute but he’s too self centered.

“Well, I’ll see you at school then.”

Olivia smiled weakly and stepped into the fireplace. She threw the floo powder on the ground. “Apartment of Severus Snape.”



In just a moment, Olivia was ducking out of the fireplace in the now familiar living room. “Hello uncle.”

Severus was stooped over some papers on the coffee table. “Back so soon? What did you think of Malfoy?”

“Why do you call him by his last name?” Olivia watched her uncle watching her and realized he seemed to want her impression of the boy she’d spent the last two hours with. “Uh… he’s okay. A little too ‘School Spirit’ for my liking. You’d almost think he was a Slytherin Cheerleader, not a Seeker.”

Severus grimaced. “Well, he’s not the best Seeker, maybe he should be a Cheerleader instead.”

Olivia arched her eyebrow. “Not the best Seeker? That’s not how he tells it.” She left her uncle to his work. What could he possibly be doing that requires him to look at papers all day? And went to take a shower to rid herself of the soot she’d collected on the return trip from Diagon Ally.

Wonderful, I thought it would have turned out that she would have liked Draco, but I guess you tricked me! It's good that she knows somewhat of how Draco Malfoy is like. Self centered? definately it's his favorite subject.
