Default Sub Rosa - Sa16+

Summary: Informed on her birthday that she has an arranged marriage with Draco Malfoy, Rosa Black couldn't be angrier. After spending her entire life traveling throughout western Europe with her mother, Rosa is spending her final year of magical education in Hogwarts as a Slytherin. As if Malfoy isn't bad enough, Rosa has to deal with keeping the truth of her impending marriage from everyone and keeping up with the secrets and lies she is creating to hide the truth; especially the one about who her real father is. As the year passes and her relationship with Harry grows closer than she ever imagined, secrets hidden from her begin to be revealed... how can she keep up with all these lies she's telling to protect herself? Especially if even she doesn't know the full truth?
And in the end... who will win? Draco by family comfort and right of law? Or will Rosa disown everything she ever knew and the only person she has known her whole life just to be with Harry, one she may be falling in love with? That is, if she can keep up her secrets and lies... sometimes those aren't easily kept for too long after all.

Chapter 1
The Gift

Normally I woke up when the sun rose just above the horizon, but today was different. It was the crack of dawn and I was already wide awake. After I gave up trying to go back to sleep for an hour, I figured I could keep unpacking the boxes and transferring some of those things into my suitcases. While I was throwing various robes and books into my suitcases, I was complaining about it under my breath. This was the 5th country I’ve lived in since I’ve been born, and now the second school I’ll be attending. I didn’t mind Beauxbatons; I was pretty fluent in French and there were some British kids there too. I didn’t see why my mom was subjecting me to this torture. Did she want to force me to make her my best friend? After all, she was the only other person I've had in with my throughout all of my life for as long as I could remember.

Growing frustrated at the lack of space and still a few last things to go, I slammed the trunk top shut and pushed it away. Once I changed, I left my bedroom and headed for the bathroom. Twenty minutes later, my mom began banging on the door, but I didn’t hear much until another ten minutes passed.

"For Merlin’s sake, get moving! Did you fall in again?"

Scowling, I stopped running the water. "Out in a minute!"

"You said that five minutes ago! You aren’t the only one who needs to go."

"Then you should’ve thought about many bathrooms there would be! This is the biggest place we’ve ever had, yet you get the fewest bathrooms! Were you bargain hunting?" I dried out my hair with a heating charm.

"I wasn’t bargain hunting for your birthday gift, let me tell..."

I burst out of the bathroom at the mention of my birthday. Mom smiled and slipped into the bathroom, locking it.

"I was almost done!" I snapped, banging on the door. I kept hitting my fists against it for another few moments, but I gave in when she didn’t respond whatsoever.

Sighing, I headed to the kitchen. Seeing there was no breakfast, I grabbed something from the fridge and sat down on a chair and ate whatever it was without really tasting it. We had four chairs, all of which were placed in a circle, but there was no table in the middle. It looked ridiculous; every room was still half-packed.

My mom didn’t acknowledge it was my 17th birthday for the rest of the day. I locked myself in my room all day; The long-fought battle between me and my suitcase was finally won… to the suitcase. I had to take out some personal valuables to fit the last few books. When that was done, I just read any of the books I could find in my various boxes from our recent move from southern France. I got a letter from my best friend at Beauxbatons. I honestly never thought such a boring day could exist. It was just around sunset when I heard two loud bangs.

"Mom, door!" I called, unmoving from my book-laden bed.

"Get dressed!" she called back.

My eyebrows creased together in confusion. "I am!"

"Nicer. We have guests."

I heard heels clicking along the marble floors. Was this a black-tie event she had organised? On my birthday? This had better be a birthday party... but with people I know this time. Maybe some of my British/French friends were invited?

Trying not to let the exciting thought overtake my feelings, I changed out of what I had on and into a colourful, tropical-looking halter summer dress I got yesterday as a birthday gift from my friend a few days ago and a pair of leggings. Once I had changed, I brushed my black hair, recently streaked with pink and blue. After putting on make-up, I made my way out of the room and downstairs to the guest living room. I stopped at the doorframe. If this was going to be some small party it was going to be pathetic. Three people, two of which are adults, that I don’t even know.

"Rosa!" my mom turned around, smiling brightly.

Important guests at that. And our house still half-unpacked? Wow, she really thought this one through.

"I don’t think you will remember our guests... come on."

I warily crossed the room and stood behind a couch. When the guests looked at me, something about the piercing grey eyes of the older man and his son seemed familiar, but I couldn’t put a name to them.

"These are the Malfoys."

I had met them once or twice when I was young, before my mum first moved out of Britain. Few knew about my parentage, my father more specifically. The Malfoys only knew of my existence because my father was once a Death Eater, like Mr. Malfoy presumably still is. He was young, though, my father. He wasn’t in the most prestigious ranks of Death Eaters as Mr. Malfoy, but they all knew each other. From what I assume was the result of Legilimens, he found out about my mother’s existence and, ultimately, me. They put me and their son together each of the few times my mother met with the family, but whenever we played together it didn’t go too well.

“Pleasure,” I said with as much of a smile I could make without it looking too obviously fake. I sat on the other side of the loveseat my mom was seated on already.

After they exchanged greetings, the three adults started talking. I just sat there, pretending to listen. I felt the hair rising on my neck. I turned slightly and looked directly at Draco, whose eyes burned into me. When I met his gaze, the corner of his mouth raised into a mix of a smirk and smile; it was a cocky look that took all my strength to resist scowling back at. Biting the inside of my lip to resist, I then turned back to my mum and the Malfoys.

“Rosa, dear, why don’t you show Draco around? I’ll call you two for dinner.”

“Um, mum, it’s still a bit of a...”

The look she gave me cut me off mid-sentence. I stood up and turned around, catching a glimpse of her smiling brightly. When I heard Draco get up, I walked away, mentally fuming. I didn’t speak as I left the room. I went up the stairs and stopped once I reached the top. Draco arrived at the top 3 steps behind me and came to my side. I edged away an inch, giving myself the space he invaded.

“Other living room,” I said, gesturing towards the couch that was placed before a carpet, barely noticeable behind the boxes built up around the space like a fortress wall.

“And you’ve been here for two weeks?” I heard a faint hint of disdain and surprise in his voice.

It was comments like this that resulted in almost every incident ‘just I caused’ with him as a kid. I broke his nose. Twice. You’d think he’d have learned.

“Yes,” I said curtly, my right hand curling into a tight fist. I turned on my heel and continued on, stopping in the kitchen.

I looked at Draco, whose eyes looked at the circle of chairs around nothing. He seemed rather amused.

“So we’re eating here?” he asked, holding back laughter.

“No,” I snapped. I passed him and headed for the door that led to our balcony overlooking the rest of our land, the forest and a glimpse of a lake beyond it. I opened the door and turned to Draco. “After you.”

He stood there, eying me warily. I had a feeling he hadn’t repressed the memory of when I locked him out of his mansion and left him banging on the doors to be let in for 5 hours. His parents finally heard and let him in then, after which I got hit once for being 'rude', 'disrespectful', 'a nuisance', 'even worse than an imp' (sometimes 'kappa'), and many other things. My mum loved to yell and label me with a new name for my 'attitude' back then.

“Ladies first,” he responded, a hint of a challenge in his tone.

“You’re the guest.”

He started chuckling, momentarily taking me off-guard. “You haven’t changed,” he finally said, one corner of his mouth raised in a wry smile. At least he wasn't smirking, or I'd have reason to forcibly wipe that annoying, pompous look off his face.

My eyes narrowed on him, glaring. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I growled.

His smirk just grew. “Still as feisty as a blast-ended skrewt.”

“And you’re still as arrogant as a hippogriff. Your point?”

He glared coldly, all signs of humour gone.

“You don’t scare me,” I said, slamming the door shut and pushing by him.

He stumbled back one step and caught himself. It hasn’t even been 5 minutes alone with him and I’m ready to push him off that balcony.

I led him to the hallway on the other side of the stairs, stopping next to the beginning of the wall. “Bedrooms.” I pointed down the hall directly in front of us, waving slightly at the two doors on each white wall. “Study...” I pointed at the door at the end of the long hallway.

“Your mum works?” Draco asked, surprised.

“It’s more like a potions room,” I rephrased, turning from the closed 'study' door to him to gauge his reaction.

He didn’t comment further on the subject. “So, you’re coming to Hogwarts,” Draco said suddenly as I passed him again.

“Yes.”

“Final year?” he pressed further.

“Yeah.” I stopped at the top of the stairs, looking to the blank wall connected to the living room, overhanging the stairs halfway down. “Wouldn’t you already know this information?”

“I’ve heard whispers, nothing more.”

I scowled. I tried to step down the first stair, but a grip on my upper arm stopped me, pulling me back a few steps. “Let. Go,” I snarled, my head snapping towards him with icy eyes. My bangs felt over one of my eyes, the black and blue section blocking my view of Draco.

“A house tour doesn’t include this ‘study’?” His hard eyes held mine. A glint of challenge reflected in his pale eyes.

“No. Nor my bedroom,” I added quickly as his mouth began to open. He shut it, but it began to open again. “Nor my mum’s. Or the guest rooms.”

“Your mother said she’d call,” he finally said, his response sounding abnormally clipped.

“So?”

“We should...”

“Since when did you listen to rules?” I cut in scathingly, my eyes narrowing on him suspiciously.

He didn’t reply. Only his grip tightened to a rather uncomfortable grasp. I bit the inside of my lip at the increasing pain.

“Are you trying to break my arm? Let go!”

He pulled my away from the stairs and let go finally, his hand brushing against my arm as it fell back to his side. It made me want to shiver. I rolled my shoulder and stretched out my arm thankfully. Draco just scowled as I did this.

“What do you think is so important that we can’t be down there?” I asked Draco, curious. He seemed to know it was important enough to not barge back in.

He didn’t reply for a moment. “So you were in France?”

I sighed and rolled my eyes, defeated. He knew what was going on. Why couldn't I?

“Yes.”

“Did you go to school, or...?”

“I was at Beauxbatons for two years.”

“So you’re fluent in French then?” he pressed curiously.

“Oui, je parle couramment français. Et toi, le gars qui ont les cheveux gras et m’énerve trop?” I replied. Yes, I speak fluent French. And you, you greasy haired guy who annoys me greatly? It was moments like this I wished I knew better French than I already did and that French wasn’t so picky about grammar; it’s much easier to make insults in English.

“Un peu,” he responded, sounding unsure. “What was the rest?”

“Rien.”

He scowled, understanding my response of nothing clearly. “So where else have you lived?”

“Why?” I asked suspiciously, my blue-green eyes narrowing on him.

“Conversation,” he replied, shrugging.

“Draco, Rosa, dinner!” my mum yelled from downstairs.

Thankful for the perfect timing, I hurried down the stairs and through the living room. I made my way down the hall and into our official dining room. I nearly tripped over one of our two house elves, narrowly avoiding making a huge mess of food.

“’Scuse Melli, young mistress! Melli never watches where she’s going...”

The little elf got to her feet, bowing down before me a twice and scurried off to the other end of our table with the two platters in her hands. She placed them before Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy as I sat down to the side of mum, who was at the head of the table.

Melli hurried back into the big kitchen in the next room over and came back out with two more platters, placing one in front of me and one in the empty seat next to me. Moments after Melli disappeared into the kitchen, Draco sat down behind the empty platter next to me.

My jaw clenched. I swear there’s some sort of ulterior motive for our parents putting us together every time we had some gathering. Or it was a conspiracy, who knows. As soon as the last platter was placed in front of mum, we all removed the cover and started eating.

Dinner was eerily quiet. Once we finished the main course, we had a small cake brought out, already cut into six pieces.

“I made it myself,” mum said the moment it was placed in the middle of our group to the one side of our dining room table.

“This is my birthday gift from you, isn’t it?” I asked, looking from the elaborately frosted cake to her.

“Yes.”

“Couldn’t find anything as a gift?”

“Exactly,” she responded, smiling.

I smiled back, amused, and looked back to the cake. It was a nearly perfect replica of the Slytherin house shield, something I’ve seen my life even though I’ve never set foot in Hogwarts Castle.

Mum took the knife and reached for Mr. Malfoy’s plate first.

“Serve your daughter first, Cassie; it is her birthday after all,” he said, looking from me to my mother. My cheeks burned mildly at this.

She did as she said without a moment’s hesitation, taking my plate and placing a big slice onto it. She continued serving everyone, leaving the 6th piece on the platter. We all ate our cake in silence.

“Before we go...” Mr. Malfoy looked up from his watch. “We have a few gifts.”

I smiled; I didn’t exactly expect them to have a birthday gift for me, it was a pleasant surprise. He snapped his fingers and an oddly-shaped, perfect wrapped gift was summoned to his side. He passed it to mum, who gave it to me. I took it from her and flipped it so the largest, rounder end was near me. I ripped off the paper. Once I recognized the straw-like, wood end I ripped faster. I flipped the exposed broomstick so the handle was the right way up and read the handle.

“A Firebolt 360?” I breathed, shocked. They were being released to the wizarding public in Britain in two days! The last time I held a broomstick in my hand was at Beauxbatons at our Quidditch final. It broke when I was hit by a bludger and the broom flew into the stands. Even that broomstick was a Nimbus 2002, nowhere near as good as this one.

“Someone has to bring Slytherin up from the place its team is at,” Mr. Malfoy said.

“Thank you,” I said, smiling.

“This,” Mrs. Malfoy said, pushing a medium-sized box across the table. “Goes with that.”

I took it and ripped off the wrapping paper. Beneath was a fine cherry wood box engraved with the Black family crest. Carefully opening the box, my eyes widened slightly at what was inside.

“Finest dragon skin in the market. Directly from Romania,” Mrs. Malfoy explained.

I tried on the Quidditch gloves. They felt a little big, but the moment they sat still on my hands, they tightened magically, fitting perfectly. They felt like an extra skin on my hand.

“They will only ever fit your hands now,” Mrs. Malfoy told me.

I slid them off and gingerly put them back into the engraved box. “Thanks,” I said, looking from it to Mrs. Malfoy, smiling brightly.

I wasn’t sure if I was expecting Draco to give anything. He never was the most giving person... or sharing, for that matter.

“Go ahead, Draco,” Mr. Malfoy said. There was a certain edge to his tone I couldn’t place... it worried me.

Draco pulled an even smaller, wrapped box from is pocket. He put it on the table and slid it over so it was directly in front of me. His hand lingered on it a moment, and then let go and dropped back onto his lap. I looked at it, curious but wary. Everyone’s eyes were on me, almost burning with intensity. I refused to meet any of them in the eye, my cheeks beginning to burn from the anxiety.

The wrapping paper was really pretty this time, brightly coloured with various flowers and yin-yang signs, very un-Slytherin like. It served as a good reason to take my time unwrapping it. When I finished unwrapping, the paper dropped to an empty spot on the table. In my hands, now, was a small, black velvet box.

This had better be a sick joke and there was just a pair of earrings inside.

The eyes around me told my hopes likewise, though. How could my mother do this to me? Without telling me! No form of warning; I barely even know him! Was this why we returned to Britain? The real reason – sending me off to my death? It was nice knowing everyone...

Well, maybe not everyone.

I pulled the top up. Inside was a sparkling rock of a diamond on a perfect silver ring.

As much as I wanted to pinch myself really hard, I don’t think the Malfoys would take too kindly to me telling them I’m trying to get out of this nightmare. The only thing stopping me from not caring about the consequences of doing such a thing was having the knowledge of what my mother would do to me.

So, I did the only other option I had to escape this sick dream temporarily.

Thud!

Chapter 2
The Train

The greenery blurring by the windows changed momentarily, revealing a broad lake beneath a stone bridge we travelled upon. I sat in this compartment alone, just watching the scenery zoom by the window. I refused to even acknowledge Draco’s existence when I passed him at the station and my mum and his family said hello, when I ran into him putting my owl’s cage in the designated place in the back of the train... when he followed me when I was on the train...

It took hiding out in the loo for 10 minutes to get rid of him.

I looked down from the window and at the velvet box in my hand. I flipped the top open to look at the diamond engagement ring again. It was beautiful, but if it came from anyone else I would probably like it a lot more.

Sighing, I dropped the box into my bag and zipped it up. If I kept it out any longer, it might end up being thrown halfway across the lake. I had to keep telling myself that doing so would indeed be a bad thing to do.

I saw movement out of the corner of my eye; three people had stopped at my compartment door and were starting to open it. I thought back on when I saw Malfoy with his two cronies by his side while he was stalking me. I put my hand on my wand and pulled it from my pocket, readying a spell that would knock him two cabins down.

“Excuse me?”

I looked at the face that poked through the door. I recognized the round glasses and messy black hair in an instant.

“Can we sit here? There’s no space for all of us in any other compartment for the next few cabins.

I thought about that for a moment. I had Harry Potter and his friends in my clutches right now. My mum wasn’t exactly a Death Eater like Mr. Malfoy, but was in the same boat Mrs. Malfoy was in; she supported their cause. I could help even more if I... no, it wouldn’t help if I tried anything now. It would probably be easier if I got to know them, made them think I was with them. But when I’m sorted into the enemy house...

“Sure,” I finally said, pushing my wand back into my pocket, still thinking.

Harry came in first, his Weasley friend and the Granger girl following behind, all dragging their bags. They all managed to get their things overhead and sit down, the guys on the seats across from me and Granger on the far end of mine.

“So you’re new?” Harry finally asked.

I nodded.

“What’s your name?”

“Rosa. And I take you’re Harry Potter... Weasley and... Granger.”

“Ron,” Weasley spoke up.

“Hermione. Nice to meet you.” She held out a hand to me. I looked at it for a moment, considering the gesture, and then took it. Granger smiled brightly.
That was when the silence started. It seemed to grow, the level of awkward just escalating until Harry spoke again.

“Where’re you from?”

“Technically I’m British but I’ve been around so much it doesn’t feel like it.”

He smiled slightly. His emerald eyes never once left me; it made me feel somewhat awkward. If he knew the truth he’d probably be down at the end of the train in the furthest compartment possible.

“Really?” he sounded so interested; it was weird. “Have you been homeschooled then?”

“Four years, but I spent the past 2 years in Beauxbatons.”

“Really?” Weasley cut in, sounding even more interested than Harry. “What’s it like there?”

“Interesting,” was all I could respond.

“Did you happen to know a Fleur...?” he started to press with a curious tone that held a mild touch of repugnance that made my eyebrow raise.

“Ron!” Granger snapped, scowling.

I cut in with a chuckle. “Never met her, but her name is brought up a lot there.”

“Where else have you lived?” Harry asked, changing the topic while Granger glared at Weasley.

“Pretty much every country in western Europe. Farthest east I’ve lived is Greece.” Not that mum lasted too long there. We didn’t even finish unpacking by the time she decided she’d rather be back west... we took a boat to southern Italy.

“Wow. Why did you move so much? Your mum a historian or something?”

“No,” I responded, not elaborating further.

I saw three figures stop at my compartment door. One of them, the tallest in the middle, began to slide the door open.

“Here you are.”

“For Merlin’s sake, go away!” I snapped, glaring at Draco.

“Oh.” He sounded almost disgusted as he looked at the company I was with. Harry already had his wand out. Weasley and Granger were just glaring suspiciously at him. He then let out a single laugh. “You refuse my company yet sit with these freaks?”

“You watch it, Malfoy,” Harry snapped.

Draco smirked. “What’re you going to do to me Potter? Talk me up too?”

I got up and pulled out my wand, pointing it directly at Draco. “I told you to leave me alone. How thick is your head to not see hiding out in the bathroom for 10 minutes to get you to quit stalking me isn’t some sign of love?” I spat the word.

“Are you sure about this...?” the lanky, skinny crony of Draco’s muttered.

“Shut up, Goyle. If you think this is such a rotten thing, go.”

Goyle didn’t move.

“What’re you trying to prove?” I snapped.

Draco smiled coldly. “I’ll see you soon, love.”

A white light illuminated from the tip of my wand and exploded towards Draco. He flew back into the wall across the corridor, causing it to crack around him from his weight. He slid down to the ground, but was quickly pulled up by Goyle and his fat friend. Draco walked away with them, viciously scratching at every inch of himself that he could.

I walked forwards and slammed the compartment door shut. When I turned around, Weasley’s mouth was gapping wide, Harry’s and Granger’s eyes just as wide.

“What?”

“You know him?” Harry managed to get out.

“Unfortunately.”

“Is he your boyfriend or something?” Weasley asked scathingly.

I laughed. “He wishes, so it seems.” I crossed the compartment again and sat down.

The silence after that wasn’t broken for awhile. It was dark finally, the starlight twinkling over the train and in the rippling lakes we passed. I went to change into my robes, going alone. These three didn’t seem to take too kindly to the ‘relationship’ Draco and I had. If I had any choice, I’d cut him out of my life. Clearly fate has the totally opposite intention.

I came back a few minutes later, taking my seat across from Harry. He and Weasley had changed, wearing the robes that showed their Gryffindor badges. Weasley’s was a prefect’s badge, while Harry’s was just a bit fancier than normal; probably Quidditch captain. Great, not only would we be enemy houses but we'd be playing against each other.

“Look, I’m not going to kill you or anything. It’s not like I have much choice what kind of company my mother prefers,” I finally said, breaking the long-lasting, awkward silence.

“Your family is from Slytherin, aren’t they?” Harry finally spoke.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

Harry rolled his eyes and turned to Weasley, about to start talking with him when I cut in again.

“Not everyone in my family. The ones that got blasted off that stupid ‘tree’...”

Harry’s head snapped back to me, his eyes burning into me with even more intensity than before.

“What?”

“A family tree?”

“Well yeah, my dad’s side at least. Never really knew him; he kind of disappeared before I was born...”

“What is your name?”

“I already told you that.”

“You’re related to the Blacks, aren’t you?”

I didn’t respond momentarily. Well, he was bound to figure it out eventually; if I want to gain his trust I may as well tell him the truth.

“Rosa Black.”

Harry looked at me, his face not revealing anything. He looked at Weasley, but then back to me.

“Is your dad Sirius Black?”

I bit the inside of my lip; he was the blood traitor of the family. As if being a Gryffindor was bad enough, he ran away from my biological grandma’s home when he was barely 16. I only knew what my mother told me, which was what the Prophet said and some of what my father told her. One reason we moved out of Britain was so that he could never find out about our existence and find us. So my mum said at least.

I thought about it momentarily though. If they knew my family, they would know Sirius’s brother, my real father... they might already know the history. They would loathe me to the core.

“Yeah.”

“He never said he had a kid of his own,” Weasley whispered to Harry.

“I never met him. He probably didn’t know I even existed.” As far as I knew, that was pure fact. Not that I much cared.

Harry believed this, too. I could tell Weasley was skeptical, but he didn’t press anything. It was only a moment following this that Granger walked in wearing her Gryffindor robes. I saw her prefect badge sewn perfectly in place on them. What was it with the ‘Golden Trio’ and being students with some sort of higher power over the rest?

The train began to slow. I looked out the window to get my first view of the castle I’ve heard about for so long. The lights of the extravagant castle glimmered over the black lake that surrounded it completely, only obscured by long, narrow boats that were pulled up along the shoreline nearest to us.
It finally lurched to a stop. We got up and began getting out things off the trays above us and left. Harry was determined to stay with me, so Weasley and Granger were at his side. I passed Draco as the four of us made our way for the carriages. His eyes narrowed coldly on my company pointedly.

“Hey!”

Another red-headed girl bounded up to us. Another Weasley. She looked at me, her brown eyes twinkling curiously. “Hi. I’m Ginny. Who’re you?”

“Rosa,” I responded, smiling as respectably as I could.

I saw a blur of white-blonde hair distantly beside me. Looking out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Draco still glaring at me as he walked by. He ran into Goyle because of it. I could hear Draco telling him off for it as they got into their carriages and the thestrals pulled them off.

“Is there enough space for her to sit with us?” Harry asked.

Ginny’s welcoming, happy expression fell ever so slightly. “Yeah.”

“Good. Come on.” Harry smiled at me and walked off.

I followed behind Weasley and Granger, while Ginny kept in step with me. She hurried ahead at the last second and climbed up, taking the seat next to Harry. I sat directly across from him and next to a boy who introduced himself as Neville Longbottom. The girl next to him greeted me and told me her name was Luna Lovegood just as the carriage was pulled off. Everyone around me conversed in little groups. I spent the next while watching the dark forest blur by. I nearly fell out of my seat when the carriage suddenly skidded to a stop before the castle, I was so into the passing outlines of the evergreens and pines.

We all climbed down, taking our things with us and dragging them up the hill and stairs to the main doors of the great castle. We left them in the front and continued uphill and up the stone stairs. I could feel my heart rate picking up, my anxiety level flying with it as we stepped into the building.

Brilliant! I love an ambivilant character who you can't really work out!

Keep up that great work!

(I've been wondering, how do they know she will be a Syltherin if she hasn't been Sorted? Or have I missed something?)

The trio doesn't know for sure she'll be Slytherin. Based on what Harry saw with how she and Draco acted in each other's company and when she said 'what kind of company my mother prefers', she already seemed to know Draco Malfoy and he was called her 'love'... he just took a guess. I guess I forgot to clarify how her tone was when she said the 'what kind of company my mother prefers' part. it was supposed to be snappy, kind of like... contemptuous in a way, since she can't stand Draco and her mother seems to enjoy the company the Malfoys' company.
But he and the rest do not know for sure that she will be in slytherin. For all they know she'll turn out like Sirius Black, the man who she convinced them was her father. What she was trying to get across was Sirius and her mother made a one-night mistake and Sirius didn't know the woman he was with was, in fact, a girl from the Slytherin house when she was in Hogwarts.

That make sense? if not it's no problem for me to try and reexplain differently.

And I'm glad you enjoyed the update!

Sorry, I didn't really mean Harry & co's reaction to Rosa, I was thinking aout this:

I was just wondering if she had been sorted already for some reason, or if she was going to be sorted with the first years? My little brain was just ticking over.

I really like Rosa, she's got fire in her belly (if that makes sense!)

Have you tried the challenge area? I've strated Drabbling, I haven't written creatively for a long while, so it's been a bit like oiling the cogs. It's a bit addictive! The Snitchseeker 100 - SnitchSeeker.com

Ah. Well that was just an assumption on her part mainly, being Slytherin. And the next chapter will have her being sorted so any confusion about her sorting should be cleared up there (so no she has not yet been sorted into a Hogwarts house)

Haha, yeah, that does make sense. The characters that aren't so mary-sue or have weak personalities, and instead have that 'fire in their belly' are the much more interesting characters to read about.

I haven't drabbled before actually. I haven't done any fan fictions in... a year and a half, if not more (I have a tendency to write chapters further ahead in MS Word than my posting speed. My last fan fiction that was completed posting in late March '08 I finished in October 2007 in two weeks, I was so into it ). I guess drabbling would be a great way to get into writing creatively, especially wizarding world-related.
I'll keep in mind I have to try that. Thanks for suggesting it!

Chapter 3
The Sorting

“Ms. Black?”

I turned my head and saw a much older woman standing off to the side of the hall to avoid being trampled by exited students making their way to the Great Hall.

“You keep going, Mr. Potter, this will only take a minute,” the woman said when Harry slowed and looked back curiously. He did as he was told with a wary look on his face and hurried to catch up to his friends again. What a clingy guy, geez...

“Yes?”

“I’m Professor McGonagall, the new headmistress.” She smiled warmly. “Welcome to Hogwarts; you still have to be sorted, so if you will follow me I’ll take you with the 1st years.”

She turned around and walked away. I walked quickly after her, having just a bit of trouble keeping up with her brisk speed on my short legs. On the way she’s telling me various bits of information about the houses, the teachers and classes, and right as the 11 year olds come into view that I go to the front because I’m being sorted first.

Following her up to the front, Professor McGonagall goes on telling the first years most of the same stuff she already told me. We are then led into the Great Hall, down the centre of the room between the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw tables. Once led to the front of the full, large room we all stop. She gave a short speech and called me up first. I sat on an old stool and an even more ancient hat was placed on my head.

Qualities of both...

Which two?

Similar to your uncle... yet more like your father. Even he, though...

I was surprised it implied I could make a Gryffindor. It was an appalling thought, I could never imagine myself turning blood traitor. Also considering what my mother would do if I was placed in the house instead of...

“Slytherin!” it called out in the middle of my thought.

As the hat was taken off my head, I looked at the Gryffindor table and found Harry and his friends. He looked a bit crestfallen, but managed a slight smile when he caught my eye. I got up off the stool and made my way to the opposite side of the room and to the first empty spot nearest to me. I didn’t happen to notice the spot was across and down two places from Draco, though.

“Good choice.” He smirked.

I scowled and turned in my seat to face the teachers’ table as McGonagall gave another speech to everyone. I faded in and out of it, only really catching “Filtch’s list” and “Dumbledore rest in peace”. When she finished, food magically appeared upon the table and we all began to eat.

“You’re Rosa, aren’t you?”

I looked up at the girl directly across from me. Her curious hazel eyes burned into me, making me feel just as awkward as I felt for half of the train ride here.

“Do I know you?” I asked.

“No, I’ve heard about you. I’m Aurelia Brunes.” Her soft features brightened in a smile.

“Am I famous or something?” I asked plainly.

“No, he’s brought you up once or twice since we sat down.” She looked at Draco pointedly.

I scowled again and took some lamb chops and bread from the centre of the table and dropped them onto my plate. I continued grabbing anything within my reach and dug in.

“He’s your boyfriend?”

I swallowed my first bite of lamb, and then responded, “No.”

“He’s been saying...”

“He wishes,” I cut in irritably.

Aurelia just nodded in response and nibbled on the drumstick in her hand.

“So where are you from? Why did you come here for only your final year?”

My knife slipped just as I finished cutting the last of the lamb chop when I looked up at the brunette girl.

“I just moved back to Britain – I’m living in Hampshire now.”

“Where were you before?” The girl finished her chicken and placed the bone on the corner of her plate, now taking some steak.

“France.”

“So you’re French?” Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully on me. “You don’t sound French.”

“Believe me, I’ve been all over Western Europe. I probably don’t sound like anything in specific.”

She chuckled.

I never made friends easily. Even at Beauxbatons; I went to school there after 1 year of intense French tutoring. I was pretty fluent by the time I went there, yet it took me almost 6 months to have an official small group of friends. At Hogwarts it only took the first 10 minutes of the meal. Unless it was just another girl being nice and the moment we leave I never see her again.

After an hour, McGonagall announced we would all go to our houses and get set up and go to bed there. I got up along with every other student in the hall and nearly fell back into my seat. I fought back and followed the other Slytherins out. Aurelia found me and kept to my side, blabbering on about... something. I wasn’t really paying attention.

“Come on,” I said as I pulled her deeper into a crowd of other 6th and 7th years when I saw Draco casually making his way closer to me with an even larger group of his ‘friends’.

As all the houses broke off in various directions upon leaving the Hall, I saw Harry. For the moment we had a view of each other, he waved. I smiled slightly, almost feeling a twinge of guilt that the only reason he was being kind was because he thought I was the long-lost daughter of the man I could only assume he was rather close with. Almost.

Yeah, that's the exact same reason I liked them. We all knew it's impossible to happen, so it was much more fun to imagine how everyone wuld react to them. I do have a ton of dramione f.fs I never finished (I have tons of ideas, just no real muse. It's sad )
If I do end up getting somewhere with one of my dramione f.fs I shall post it here then!

Chapter 4 in the next post. it may not seem like much (it really isn't much) but it's just the start of what is yet to come

Chapter 4
The Library

I closed the book shut and walked around the book-filled table, taking my seat in front of the scattered piles. I flopped down on the chair, curling one leg beneath me, and opened the book again. As soon as I finished the first chapter, I pushed the book forwards and pulled my parchment to the empty space in front of me and began writing about transforming animals into stuffed toys.

“Hey.”

My quill flew over my shoulder as I jumped in my chair.

“Oi, watch it – those things hurt!”

I turned around and saw a tiny red dot already beginning to turn darker on Harry’s right cheek.

“Sorry,” I said, trying to make the word not sound as forced as I was making it.

He picked up the quill and passed it to me. I took it and turned around, continuing to write. The sudden sound of a chair dragging across the hard floor made my hand twitch and mess up my word and a couple others.

“Oh, sorry. I’ll fix that.” Harry pulled out his wand and did a little wave and flick and the word I just wrote disappeared, along with the long splotch I made over the others. A couple spare letters from those words disappeared too.

“Uh... is that normal?” I asked, looking at the half-written words.

“I just learned the spell today, actually, from Hermione.”

“Ah.” I responded as elusively as I could, nodding.

I still didn’t that highly of his friends, especially Granger. She was a rather annoying show-off in class. While thinking about the classes I had with her in them today and her continual one-hand-up-after-the-other antics, I kept writing. She kind of reminded me of an octopus with her arms waving around so much. The suction cups could easily be her way of grabbing onto her teachers and keeping a firm hold on them...

I have to stop drinking three cups of tea at lunch.

The minutes passed as the silence grew between Harry and me, the only noise being my quill scratching against the paper as it made words. He just kept looking between my parchment and me. Most of the time I felt his eyes burning into me.

“You’re in Transfiguration?” he finally asked.

“Yep,” I responded as I continued to write.

“Isn’t it really difficult?”

“Not really. I’m kind of into changing things.” I looked up from my paper and pointed to my hair. Today it was streaked with white-blonde and blood red colours.

Harry laughed. “True.”

“And a lot of fun stuff happens in that class. Today we were transforming pet cats into stuffed animals and... well, you know Finnigan?”

“Seamus? Still blowing things up?”

“Well, its head and front legs were perfect... but the twitching back legs and tail that was still swishing is no longer fluffy.”

Harry smiled and shook his head. I smiled back at him for a moment and turned back to my parchment. I was on my last sentence when Harry finally spoke again.

“So, Slytherin?”

I stopped writing, sighing lightly. Of course that was on his mind. As breezy as he was trying to be about it, I could sense and hear the unease to his tone.

“What about it?” I answered calmly, still looking down at my paper.

“You don’t seem like a Slytherin.”

Translation: I don’t come off as a maniacal, blood-crazed Death Eater. That’s always a good sign. Then again, I’m not acting entirely myself around Harry...

“I guess it runs in the family,” I responded, shrugging.

“But Sirius, your father, was in Gryffindor. Was your mother in Slytherin?”

“Yes,” I responded. I finally turned and looked at Harry, holding his confused eyes.

“Sirius Black... with a Slytherin girl?” his eyebrow rose skeptically.

“Not everyone that comes out of Slytherin is totally evil. She never told him, he never asked or assumed.” I shrugged. “We don’t go around asking each other what house we’re in when outside of school after all.”

“She didn’t hold it against him he was Gryffindor?”

“She didn’t know him in Hogwarts,” I said as if it was obvious.

His suspicious expression dropped and he nodded. “That makes sense then.”

He was so easy to manipulate. I really wished there was more of a challenge; I haven’t had one in awhile. I turned back to my parchment and quickly scribbled the rest of my sentence. Scanning for spelling errors, I deemed it worthy of being seen by an adult and rolled it up and tying it shut. I turned back to Harry and looked down at his wrist.

“What time is it?” I asked.

He listed his arm and checked his watch.

“6pm.” He then looked at me. “Hungry?”

“A little, yeah.”

He looked at the piles of books that fortified the table and then back at me. “Are you done here then?”

I nodded. He got up, and I followed suit. I grabbed my scroll and hurried behind him. As soon as we appeared from behind the last of the shelves, I recognized a bushy excuse of hair standing by the librarian’s counter, taking out a pile of books that she could probably just barely see over. Hermione turned around.

“Harry?” One book slid off the top of her pile. I heard her mutter a simple levitating spell and she put it back on top of her pile. “What’re you doing here?”

“Studying,” he responded.

I snorted. “See you later, Harry.” I patted his shoulder as I passed him and left the library, heading for the Great Hall.

“Hey!” Aurelia suddenly materialized beside me. “How was your first day?”

“Finnigan blew up a cat in Transfiguration, Weasley made a potion that petrifies people... for who-knows-how long – Slughorn assumes one week by the smell of the potion - instead of making a Felix Felicius.” Then I sighed deeply. “And I have Draco in Potions and DADA.”

“Very climactic,” Aurelia drawled sarcastically as we turned a corner and joined a few more students heading towards the delicious smells of dinner.

“If you knew how Draco and I are in the same room, you’d understand,” I sighed in response as we turned into the Great Hall and headed towards the Slytherin table.

“Oh believe me, I’ve already gotten the gist,” she responded elusively and sat down.

MAJOR filler chapter, I apologize ahead of time. I didn’t just want to say in one sentence what happens throughout this entire chapter for some reason.. oh yea, I didn’t want to jump too far ahead like I originally planned. That too. Lol. There is some Malfoy in here though.
Either way, enjoy.

Chapter 5
The Try-Outs

It was the 3rd week of school already. I’ve had very little time to actually enjoy myself; given all the homework I have to do and studying for the final exams at the end of the year for the 7th years, it’s amazing I have time to eat, let alone work. Sometimes I skipped that to study and Aurelia would bring me something. If this was only the 2nd week of school, I dare not imagine the nightmare the rest of the term will be; this is only the beginning.

The sad thing about all of this is I never much cared about homework and scheduling time to do it until I came here. Now I was paranoid about it all.

I was hoping I would be able to try out for Quidditch here so I would be able to enjoy myself for the short while I had between homework and study sessions, but at the rate I was going I would be lucky if I had time to find my broom, let alone use it. Either way, Draco talks a bit too much for his own good and, because of it, Aurelia thinks I’m some female junior version of Viktor Krum and pressured me into trying out. I never knew anyone to be more stubborn than me!

It was Saturday morning when I was woken up ay 7a.m by a mix of my alarm clock and being shaken.

“Come on! Try-outs will start in an hour, get moving!”

“Go... away...” I grumbled, rolling over onto my stomach so my face was buried into my pillow.

“You have to do it! You have custom-fitted dragon skin gloves and a Firebolt 360 for a reason! What do you think they’re for; leisure? You never give yourself leisure time anyways.”

I turned my head so I was looked at her with half-shut eyes. “I don’t. Need. To use. Them.”

“Yes you do!”

“They’re. Gifts. From. Malfoys.”

“Really? You never told me that. Christmas?”

“Birthday. Now bugger off, it’s unnatural to be awake so early on Saturday.” I turned my head so my face was buried into my pillow again.

Moments later, I felt some tight grip around my ankle yank me up midair. My neck bent awkwardly as I was lifted and now held up in midair by my ankle. I was so thankful I didn’t wear a nightgown last night.

“I will forcibly dress you by myself if I must.”

I looked back at Aurelia, seeing her upside-down, determined and angry expression.

“Why are you so desperate for this?”

“Because with you the Slytherin team will finally win for the first time in over a decade!”

“Are you sure it isn’t just because you want to see me without...” my sentence was cut off by a shriek from suddenly being yanked from my bed to hovering over the floor, and then dropped.

“There, you’re awake. Now come on, you need to take a bath and get dressed and get down there!”

I grumbled and groaned as I slowly got up. I stretch my stiff and now badly aching muscles.

“Dropping me onto the floor...” I yawned mid-phrase. “Won’t help me do better.”

“Sorry. Now get moving!”

I rolled my eyes and shook my head as I turned around.

Over the course of the next hour I heard nothing but Aurelia’s voice saying one thing after another about tactics and general pep talk. She followed me right out the common room door, down the dungeon, and down to the field. It was just a few steps from the field I stopped.

“So when you grab the Quaffle that way you ca-why’re you stopping? You’re so close, come on!”

“For the sake of Merlin above could you just shut up for a minute?” I cut in loudly, my hand tightening to the pound you could hear the dragon skin gloves straining around my knuckles.

For the first time in almost an hour, I didn’t hear my friend’s voice.

“Thank you!” I sighed. I then walked onto the field and Aurelia went up the stairs and into the stands where all the students from Slytherin were watching the try-outs.

I lines up behind the other younger kids trying out for Chaser. All the first and second years were babbling to each other about Quidditch. Whenever I absentmindedly caught parts of conversations, I noticed how Quidditch-stupid these little kids were.

“OK!”

The babbling quieted until it was no more. Everyone looked forward.

“I am Bryony Montague, Quidditch captain this year. It’s great you all came out, but only a select few will actually make it. So, to start off these try-outs, I’d like you all to get on your brooms and take four laps around the field on your broomsticks.”

All the older, more advance students got on and up in the air no problem. I was following them at first, but managed to be up at the front because of the Firebolt’s speed. I pulled a few diving and dodging maneuvers I used in my past few years as Quidditch keeper and chaser to avoid the younger kids who, if they managed to stay on upon descent and pick up speed when at a high enough level with the ground, just got in the way with their unpredictable flying.

After these four laps were completed, we were left with a few 3rd years, a majority of 4th and 5th years, and only the eight 6th and 7th years on the field.

“Ok, for those trying out for keeper, line up by that goalpost.” Bryony announced. “Those for Chasers in the centre of the field. Beaters to the far right.”

Everyone started shuffling to where they were told. I followed the only face I knew that was trying out for Chaser, a girl named Daphne in my year. We were then told to break up into two groups, one on each side of the middle line. When we did that, the try-outs really began.

The first two elimination rounds seemed to go fast. It was rather amusing to watch some of the Chasers’ attempts to dodge the oncoming bludgers while aiming the quaffle towards the goalpost. Most failed; one guy ended up dangling upside down, only attached to his moving broomstick by wrapping his legs around it. I bit my lip, trying not to laugh, when the broomstick ran into the kid trying out for keeper and took out the both of them. A couple of onlookers in the stands took them to the hospital wing.

It was the last round and I was the last up. Kicking up on my broomstick, quaffle beneath my arm resting half on my hip, half on my stomach, I managed to dive-bomb and avoid the bludgers. I kept spiralling down, the ground seeming to grow bigger in each passing second. I pulled back up, but had to swerve again to try and avoid another spare bludger, but this time it nicked my foot, not enough to hurt but it threw me off and sent me spinning and unable to get back in control no matter how much I tried to turn it back. This was ridiculous – did the Malfoys curse my broom or something?

I was leaning so far to the side to try and turn it back that I fell off, but as soon as I was down, I felt something similar to a gust of air swing me back around and get my broom going in a straight line. I didn’t linger on it, even with the distraction of people cheering after my ‘performance’, as I sped towards the Keeper. I was coming up on their left and they were blocking it just so I couldn’t get it in directly from my current position. With one quick maneuver, I swerved off to the right and threw it towards the hoops. The Keeper wasn’t fast enough on her Nimbus 2003 and missed.

Everyone in the stands cheered louder at the success. I brought myself back down to the ground and hopped off, gracefully landing on the soft grass.

The roster of chasers was announced and I was on it. We were given a handout with the schedule for practices and another with the games. We were allowed to leave at least, so I made my way off the field. Aurelia met me there the moment I stepped off the field.

“That was an amazing save – how’d you even do that spin around on your broom? Perfect 360, I swear...”

“I don’t know,” I cut in.

“What?” Aurelia stopped abruptly, her head cocked slightly to the side in confusion.

“Whatever that was, it wasn’t me,” I responded, lowering my voice.

“Then you cheated?”

“I didn’t do anything! I thought you did it.”

“I don’t know how to do whatever kind of magic that would’ve required.”

I scowled and kept walking. She eventually caught up and continued on by my side, following me to the castle. Halfway to the castle, I saw a group of three guys led by the mentally disturbed Malfoy. He was making slowly making his way to us. I didn’t realize he was until it was too late; he slowed down his pace to match mine.

“Good last shot there, love. You’re rather lucky.”

“Bugger off,” I snapped, picking up my walking pace.

“The gloves did work well then?”

“Yes,” I responded curtly. “Tell your mother I say thank you again.”

He smirked. “I will.” His tone then changed when he spoke next, the softness to it sending shivers down my spine (and not in a good way). “See you later, love.”

Aurelia grabbed my forearm before I could totally lift it up into a punch.

Chapter 6
The Threat

It was Monday again. I had to skip breakfast just to finish reading the chapter on vampire transformation... leaving my stomach growling painfully for the first two blocks of classes. It wasn’t until Potions right before lunch I truly felt it.

“Alright, before we get started I’d like to adjust your partnerships; some of you could be doing better under better influences.” Professor Slughorn looked at Weasley as he said this, whose ears turned red sheepishly. Everyone else grumbled. “Now, now!” he continued over the voices. “This will only be difficult if you all wish it to be. Ms. Abbot will partner with Mr. Smith...”

And so our shifting began. I liked the thought of this change because I was stuck with some annoying Ravenclaw girl, but I would’ve picked her over who I ended up with.

“Ms. Black, Mr. Malfoy.”

I refused to budge. So did Draco.

“Get a move on, you two. Quit dilly-dallying.”

There was an uneasy murmur among the small class.

“Professor, I don’t mind switching with Rosa!” Pansy announced cheerfully, raising her hand.

Of course she wouldn’t, she was stuck with goody-goody Granger.

“A kind gesture that is, Ms. Parkinson, but I’m afraid there will be no switching unless I say so,” Slughorn responded.

He didn’t sound the least bit apologetic. Well, if he did, I chose to ignore it.

“I would hate to have to deduct points from my own house...”

“Not like it’s your house,” I muttered beneath my breath. He wasn’t the head of Slytherin.

“Pardon me, Ms. Black?”

I looked up from my hands to the professor. Forcing my sweetest smile, I responded, “I was just saying I agree. Mr. Malfoy should get a move on.” I dropped my smile and rolled my eyes as soon as Slughorn turned away to look at Draco in the back of the other side of the room.

“Yes, be a gentleman and move to the empty seat next to Ms. Black,” Slughorn agreed.

“If that isn’t too difficult for you to do,” I added, turning in my seat to Draco. My eyes narrowed angrily on him. His face was set along with his glare back at me.

“Ladies first,” he responded with appointed, cool voice.

“Should I define ‘gentleman’ for you, Draco? I know you have difficulty with the ‘gentle’ part and will never be considered a real ‘man’, but it’s not exactly the same word put together.” I topped it off with a mockery of his smirk.

Draco got up in a huff, gathered his things, and made his way to the seat a few feet from me. Rather overdramatically, he placed his bookbag next to the table and lightly placed his book between us, even going so far as to adjust it daintily so it was a perfect rectangle.

“Thank you, Mr. Malfoy.”

“Not a problem, Professor,” he responded, looking at me out of the corner of his eyes as he did so.

It was eerie how much his voice reflected his actions just moments ago. I resisted the urge to take his prissily-positioned book and smack his fat head with it. Maybe he would be knocked out for days!

“Ms. Black?”

I blinked and looked at Slughorn. “Yes?”

“Are you daydreaming?”

“No, sir.”

He nodded to himself and continued with his lesson on the complexities of brewing Veritaserum and why you shouldn’t abuse its nature. I wasn’t really paying attention to the lesson; my thoughts about what would be for lunch were overpowering my mind.

“What’re you thinking about?” Draco whispered, barely loud enough for me to hear.

“None of your damn business,” I snapped back.

“Temper, temper...”

I clenched my fist to the point I broke my quill. I saw Draco smirk out of the corner of my eye.

“Shut up. If you want this to work, that’s all you can do.”

“Make what work? Our future?”

My head snapped to him and he looked back at me innocently. I was gripping the broken end of my quill. Well, it was the sharp end...

I swore I heard a growl. I turned around in my seat and saw Pansy glaring back at me, her quill trembling in her hand. She mouthed something to me. I understood it clearly, ‘stay away’, but I just smile back brightly. I didn’t much care for her, maybe getting her as angry as Draco... they’ll bond! And maybe he’ll see they can bond over hating me, and then Draco will forget about me, and then they get together and live all ‘happily ever after’.

“Is that the time already?” Slughorn announced suddenly, causing me to pay attention again. “Well then, that’s all for today. There will be a quiz tomorrow on what I’ve talked about today, so I hope you all paid attention. Eat well.”

I practically jumped out of my seat and scrambled to get my things together. I got my things thrown into my sack in 10 seconds flat and began to sprint out of the room.

“Slow down, Ms. Black. We don’t want any excessive messes in the hallway,” Slughorn called after me.

“Yes, professor!” I didn’t slow down as I opened the door and hurried down the hall, my feet guiding the way to the Great Hall. I even let out an audible moan when I smelled some fresh beef casserole.

“Hey!”

I didn’t slow, even when I heard running footsteps behind me.

“You, Rosie!”

“Rosa!” I snapped, spinning around to glare at whoever dared to call me by a childhood nickname I’ve always hated.

“Yeah, whatever.”

Pansy Parkinson was getting in between me and my food. This better be important.

“Yes?” I asked, forcibly sounding polite.

“What’s up with you and Draco?” she demanded.

I bit my lip to hold back my laughter, but a smile still slipped through. Pansy glared coldly in response to this.

“Nothing,” I responded.

“Don’t lie to me,” she snarled. “I’ve seen and heard how he talks to you, looks at you, talks about you...”

“So he’s got issues. That doesn’t mean I care what he d...”

“Right,” she said curtly, cutting me off. She made it clear she didn’t believe me. “Just stay away from him.”

I resisted the urge to hit her and hope that would knock some sense into her head and changed my tone entirely. “Believe me, dear, given I had a choice I would go so far as to leave the country to stay away from your precious Draco. In fact, go and take him for me.”

Pansy looked momentarily taken aback, but then went back to glaring coldly and suspiciously. “I’ll figure out your game if it kills me, Rosie.”

I honestly hope it does kill her. If it doesn’t I will if she insists calling me that.

“See you around.” She smirked and pushed past me, making her way to the Great Hall’s doors. I just rolled my eyes and followed distantly in her wake.

You had me laughing with those.

I can't wait for Rosa to give Pansy what she deserves. She never got her just deserts and I reckon Rosa's just the girl to do it

Chapter 7
The Date

It took another few weeks for me to adjust to the schedule and general system of Hogwarts. It was mid-October now and, finally, the first day of freedom; we were going to Hogsmeade.

“You’ve never visited Hogsmeade?” Aurelia asked, shocked, as we walked down the main road, walking through the crowds of kids.

“I’ve only been in the country for 2 months. Either way, isn’t this a village geared more for Hogwarts students?”

“Quite a few adults and families come through,” Aurelia responded as she took my arm and pulled me to my right and into a small, packed building with the word Honeydukes built in all gold, shimmering capitals above the shop.

“Well, then I guess I’m not one of them,” I answered with a shrug.

We looked at the wall filled with various sweets. My mouth was watering at the sight before me; so many sweets, so few hands to carry the bags... We began to pick out what we could grab, eventually filling one big bag each. Once we paid for the food, we left the store and continued down the road.

“You did bring dress robes, right?” Aurelia asked, suddenly stopping in front of Gladrags Wizardwear.

“Yeah, I’ve got one for now. Why?”

Aurelia looked at me as if it was obvious. “You haven’t seen the fliers throughout Hogwarts?”

“For...?”

“Dear Merlin...” she sighed, rolling her eyes. “December 19th there’s a Christmas Ball for the 6th and 7th years.”

“Why post it now?” I asked warily, kicking away a large stone from the ground before me. It flew forwards, bounced off the cement step, and whacked my exposed ankle rather hard. I swore under my breath and kicked it again, angry at it. It did the same thing but hurt twice as much. Picking it up, I yelled “BUGGER OFF!” and threw it into the distance, down the empty road. I turned back to Aurelia, who was wide-eyed and her eyebrows had risen. I smiled at her and sweetly said, “You were saying?”

Aurelia blinked, caught off-guard momentarily. She took a breath and continued. “Some people don’t have dress robes, shockingly enough. Ordering can be a pain. I guess the Heads care about that kind of stuff. After all, you need dress robes for a dance.”

“A dance?” I asked flatly. This was some sick joke, wasn’t it?

“Oh come on, you have to go!”

I laughed, amused at the thought of me dancing. “No, I don’t.” I began to walk down the road, the dead autumn leaves crunching beneath my feet. A grip around my upper arm stopped me and dragged me back a few steps. Aurelia spun me around and gripped both of my arms.

“Please.”

“I can’t dance!” I snapped back indignantly.

“You just follow! You’re a girl for goodness sake; it’s not like you’re leading the Yule Ball waltz.”

I snorted at the thought and shook my head. “I broke the foot of my date to the Christmas Ball at Beauxbatons last year. Not sprained or bruised, broke. I’m a hopeless case when dancing, no matter how many lessons you put me through. I suck, I’m not going, end of story.”

I pulled out of Aurelia’s tight grip and turned around. She just spun me back around.

“I’ll go with you, that way you don’t have to dance with a date. Just by yourself.”

“And hurt myself? No thanks.” I turned around again, but was once again spun around by my friend. “One more time,” I snarled. “And I’ll break your foot.”

Aurelia’s lip began to quiver.

“No, don’t you...”

“Please...” her voice wavered with her lip. I could see the tears welling in her eyes.

“Don’t start...” I warned her. I can’t handle tears from anyone, myself included.

“This is their first year doing any sort of dance they’ve had I’ve been able to go to... I was in the hospital wing for the Yule Ball in 4th year... you might not like dancing but... have you seen me with guys? No one will ask me...”

“Someone will. You don’t give yourself enough credit, Lele,” I replied. If I’m convincing enough maybe she’ll lay off me.

“I wasn’t even asked to the Yule Ball before I was in the hospital wing! Please, at least be my back-up...?”

I sighed dramatically. “Only if you shut your quivering lip.”

“Really?” She wiped away a stray tear. “You mean it?”

“Yeah, yeah. No crying about it.”

“Thanks!” Her arms flung around me and strangled me in a long hug. She finally let me out of her death grip when I began coughing and sputtering for air. She looked fine now. Bloody acting skills...

“Ah, the Christmas Ball...”

I turned around slowly, looking up at the nearing deathly pale, blonde-haired Draco with his fat and skinny cronies.

“I hope you trip over some girl and break your nose again when you go, Draco,” I snapped back.

“That’s not very nice, is it?”

I scowled and crossed my arms stubbornly, glaring at him as he stopped before me and Aurelia.

“You know what would be best?”

“If you bugger off?” I cut in.

He smirked. “No, no. I thought this year would be a great way to get to know each other...”

“Why would I want to get to know the likes of you?” I cut in flatly, eyeing him suspiciously.

He stepped closer, now towering over me. I got on my tip-toes and looked right up at him, straining my neck just so I wouldn’t look as pathetic a head shorter than him. My eyes burned coldly into his. He bent his neck down, letting his face get closer to mine until it was just inches away from me. My heart began racing.

“Better now before it’s too late,” he breathed. My body shuddered in response, utterly disgusted. His smirk just grew.

I shoved him away, enjoying watching him stumble back into Crabbe and Goyle. They lifted him back up to his feet completely. He chuckled, now smiling at me.

“You still have a few months to think about it.”

I let out a disgusted ‘ugh’ in response. “I wouldn’t even say yes if I were available.”

His smile dropped to a stony mask of an expression, his eyes cold. “Not available? Already?”

“That’s right. I’ve already been asked.” I smiled triumphantly.

He tried to stare me down, believing I was lying just to get him to back off. I held his gaze, my eyes narrowing on his. The tension began to build until I spoke again.

“Would you like me to repeat it, looking directly in your eyes, unblinking? Again? Maybe spell it out for you?”

I’ve never seen him so worked up before. Why was it such a big deal if I went with him or not? He hates me. Before he could truly show how worked up he felt, his rigid, mildly shaking composure was totally regained and he smirked again.

“Well then, we’ll see about that. I’ll see you later, love.”

I grabbed my bundled up gloves from my pocket and threw it at him. He deflected it with his arm, chuckling. He began to walk away, Crabbe and Goyle flanking both sides of him just a step behind.

I huffily stomped up to my gloves and shoved them into my pocket, grumbling incoherently under my breath the entire time.

“So you are going with me?” Aurelia asked brightly, moving up next to me.

“Sure, why not? As your back-up at least. I think this dance may be more interesting than my last one after all.”

My friend smiled even brighter than before as we continued on our way down the road, heading to wherever we decided to stop next.

Chapter 8
The Kitchen

The next two weeks passed rather peacefully for me. Draco was actually giving me space, to my own shock. I swear that boy has issues; one minute he’s suffocating me and the next he’s nowhere to be seen.

Halloween was drawing closer, and I found myself growing more excited as the days drew closer. For some reason, every time I ran into Harry he always felt the need to point out how amusing it was that I seemed so happy about the holiday. I wasn’t excited about the actual holiday, I was mainly looking forward to seeing what the meal had to offer. And I heard there were floating carved pumpkins in the Great Hall, illuminating it in an eerie glow. Who wouldn’t be excited?

When the day actually came, I had never felt so happy about anything ever. I went to classes that day practically bouncing. Naturally I heard about it...

“Hey Rosa, I haven’t seen you so happy since your birthday.”

I spun around and came face-to-face with Draco. I glared and growled at him; how dare he bring up that vile day! I had to stow that stupid engagement ring deep in my trunk just so I’d resist the urge to throw it into the lake for the mermaids to fight over.

“Ooh, got festive?” He reached out and lifted a lock of an orange streak in my black hair. I slapped his hand away.

“Watch it,” I snapped.

“You know what, Crabbe?” He looked at his short, fat friend. “She’s like a child on Christmas; overly excited for gifts... but now she’s opened one and hated what’s inside.”

“That’s right, Draco, I hate what’s inside. Just like I hated what was inside the birthday gift you gave me. Now bugger off and let me enjoy today in peace!”

I spun back around and stalked off. I listened to him, Crabbe, and Goyle laughing at me as I stormed down the corridor and in the direction of the library. I lightened my steps and calmly entered the library, my own haven at the moment because this is the one place where Draco Malfoy would never be caught walking around in while he’s alive.

“Hey.”

I jumped and whipped out my wand. Spinning around, I lifted it, but only dropped it back down when I saw Harry put his hands up in surrender, his expression surprised.

“Is this how you great everyone normally on holidays?” he asked warily as I put my wand back into my pocket. I then looked back up at him, still unsmiling. “Festive,” he commented, looking at my orange-streaked, black hair.

“So I’ve heard,” I responded flatly.

Harry’s mouth was now half-open. He was about to say something before, but I threw him off with my response.

“So do you change your hair often? Is it naturally black?”

Even his smiling, curious expression couldn’t lighten my mood.

“Yes, I steak, highlight, and dye it with magic regularly. And yes, the black is natural.”

It was a lie, honestly, saying my natural hair is black. I didn’t want him to know the truth about my horrible hair colour, he might tie it to some unwanted things and, for all I know, have an intellectual moment and realize some of my lies if he knew the truth. I can’t have that happening.

“Sh!” the librarian snapped as she walked by.

Sighing, Harry passed me, taking my arm and leading me down the aisle and to a more secluded table along the library walls. My stomach flipped at the sudden touch. Harry let me go when I was standing behind a chair. He pulled it out and rounded the table to sit in the chair opposite of me as I sat down.

“So why do you change your hair so much?” Harry pressed the moment he sat down.

“I don’t like to keep it the same for too long,” I responded, shrugging. That and I wanted to hide what it truly looks like.

“Where’d you learn it anyways?” he pressed curiously.

I thought about the answer to that. The truth wouldn’t hurt this time, it’s nothing major. “The girls at Beauxbatons. The French love to learn as much as they can about beauty and looking their best. I learned various charms off of the French girls there as a result, and after some tweaking, I got what’s here now.” I smiled slightly at the memories. I once tried to figure out how to get colours besides the natural browns and blondes and reds and how I burnt off a good 3 inches of my hair instead. I blinked out of my daze and saw Harry looking at me with an odd expression on his face. “What?”

“The more we speak, the less you seem like a Slytherin. It’s weird.”

I looked at him thoughtfully, really thinking about his words. Was I already beginning to soften? As much as I loathe the very essence of Draco, was I, without realizing it, softening to him? Was I softening to everyone for that matter? Was that why he’s been around me more, because I invite him it?

I scoffed aloud at that thought. Of course it’s not because I’m softening to him. It’s the total opposite; I’m still as much of a stubborn and blunt person as ever. It’s that exact reason he’s always trying to be around me... guys like girls they can’t have. If I did soften myself to him and pretended to give in, I wonder if he’d leave me alone.

Then again, maybe he’d attempt to get even closer to me then. Oi... Reverse psychology sucks.

“What? You don’t think so?” Harry asked.

I blinked; coming back to reality and looking back into Harry’s confused emerald green eyes.

“I don’t know. Maybe I’m different around you.” At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised.

He smiled. “Usually I’m not such a good influence.”

I shrugged. Considering the messes I’ve heard he’s made, I’m not surprised he says that. Suddenly, my stomach grumbled.

“Hungry?” Harry asked.

“Yeah. Wish we had snacks, that’d be nice.”

“Well, actually...”

My head lifted up more, my ears perking up. “What do you mean? There are snacks?” My stomach gave a rather loud, rippling growl, reminding me I hadn’t eaten in 4-and-a-half hours. Even then I barely ate half of lunch.

“If you know the right places, yes,” Harry responded elusively. “But can you keep a secret?”

“Of course,” I responded, smiling. It wasn’t a total truth, but neither was it a complete lie.

“Then let’s go.” Harry got up.

I followed suit, and he led me out of the library. I followed behind him rather closely, getting a few stares as a result, but my hunger was more important than a few muttered words. Harry led the way further down the stairs, almost into the dungeons. Once in the basement floor, we passed a portrait that swung open to reveal a group of 3 Hufflepuff students. I turned my head to look over my shoulder while walking, making sure I saw correctly, but I ran right into Harry. I accidentally slammed him into the wall next to a portrait.

“Whoops...” I stood up and took a few steps back, allowing Harry to have more space to get totally upright again.

“It’s alright, nothing’s broken,” Harry responded. He then lifted his hand and rubbed something on this portrait of fruit. I swore I heard a giggle, and then the portrait began to come out towards us, revealing a hole to pass through.

“How’d you do that?” I asked, amazed.

“Tickle the pear on that portrait.” Harry whispered.

He took my hand, our fingers entwining, and he crouched slightly so he could fit through the hole. I was short enough that I could stand totally straight and yet have two inches of space between my head and the ceiling. When we exited the portrait hole, he still had his fingers laced through mine. I was too busy looking around, marvelling at the sights of the kitchen, to say or do anything about it. Elves were scurrying around every which way, the sounds of pots and pans banging and various squeaky voices echoing around the large room.

“Harry Potter, sir, what an honour! It’s been too long, sir, too long...”

A tiny elf that barely came up to Harry’s waist scurried away from the group of workers and bowed before Harry. I gawked at the thing; why was it wearing a tea cozy for a hat? And socks! Why is this elf wearing wizards’ clothes?!

“Hello, Dobby.”

“Dobby?” The name rang a bell in my mind, but I couldn’t place where. The elf with green eyes the size of my fists looked up at me, his bright expression surprised and filled with a touch of fear.

“The little Miss Black? Dobby hasn’t seen you in many years!” the elf squeaked, bowing until his nose touched the floor.

Harry looked just as startled as Dobby. He looked from the elf to me.

“Get up,” I said with a quiet, urgent voice.

“You know Dobby?” His hand dropped from mine. I resisted the urge to wipe it on my robes.

“Dobby knows the miss, Mr. Potter! Mistress Black visited the Malfoys. Little miss and young master never got along... Dobby always cleaned up their mess.” The elf shivered.

“You knew Malfoy before coming here?” Harry’s hand dropped from mine.

“So, Dobby,” I said loudly, trying to change the topic as I turned back to the elf. “I know dinner is coming soon, but...” My stomach rumbled right on time. “Is there anything we could grab a bite of so we don’t get too hungry?”

“Not a problem, miss! Dobby can sneak away a few pieces of ham and make Mr. Potter and Miss Black a sandwich...” the elf hurried away, starting on the work he set himself up to do.

“Rosa?”

I had to turn to Harry. He looked at me with confused expectation. I inwardly sighed; considering all he’s managed to feat in the past, it’s amazing how he can’t seem to connect the simplest of dots. It’s true what the Dark Lord says, he really isn’t that powerful or bright, he just has powerful connections.

“I told you, Harry, my mother is a Slytherin. She knows the Malfoys. I can’t choose her acquaintances.”

“Exactly how many times have you visited them? Dobby seems to know you quite well.”

“NO! This is for Mr. Potter and his friend!”

Harry and I simultaneously turned our heads towards the sudden outburst. Some ugly, toad-like elf was trying to take away the sandwiches Dobby was half-done making.

“We are not to feed students until dinner.” The elf’s voice was as much like a toad as his face. It was eerie.

“Mr. Potter is hungry, and Dobby shall feed him and his friend!” Dobby snapped back insistently, steal back the bread this toad-like elf was starting to take from Dobby.

“Kreacher, leave Dobby alone.”

The ugly elf turned to us. He bowed down to us. “Pleasure to see you again, m...mas...master.” He seemed to struggle with the word ‘master’, as if he was resisting the forced urge to say it.

The contempt and sarcasm in the elf’s voice was as subtle as a boulder. The elf then looked at me, thoughtful. I really looked at the elf’s face, trying to place where I had seen it before.

“One of Potter’s mudblood friends?” Kreacher asked, looking at me.

My face went bright red at being called a mudblood; I curled my other hand into a fist - I'm far from a mudblood!

“You are never to call any of my friends mudblood, Kreacher! That’s an order!” Harry yelled at the elf.

A couple of the working elves looked at Harry oddly as they continued with their work. This elf, Kreacher, bowed down to Harry. It looked really forced, as though it was an order he couldn’t refuse as much as he wished to. I recognized it right away.

“Is he your elf?” I asked, looking at Harry in surprise. I never suspected someone like Harry to have his own elf.

Unfortunately. He came with my inheritance,” Harry spat at the elf.

“Inheritance?”

Harry looked at me. “When your father died, he left everything to me in his will. I guess it makes sense he didn’t know you existed... otherwise his effects would’ve gone to you or your mother.” He sounded kind of guilty when he spoke those words.

I finally placed it! My mum had a picture of her, her mother, my father, and his parents, from when they had a dinner together (that was shortly after the two got closer to each other; their parents never knew). This elf, ugly as sin, was in the background of it.

“Father?” Kreacher looked at me, his eyes full of confusion. “That blood traitor never...”

“Dobby finished the sandwiches, sir!” Dobby came racing back to Harry and me, passing one to each of us.

“Thank you, Dobby,” Harry said as he took it. The elf seemed to tremble with glee at the praise.

“Yes, thanks.” I took the sandwich from him and took a bite. I managed to down the entire thing in under 30 seconds. My stomach was rather thankful to have something to digest.

“Dobby will be in trouble with the master for that,” Kreacher croaked.

“Dobby can do whatever he wants! Dobby is a free elf.” Dobby smiled, seeming proud to be able to say those words.

Free? The Malfoys freed Dobby? They never freed any house elf by choice... well, now I have something to use against Draco. Come to think of it, I bet Dobby has a lot of information on Draco I could use against him.

“Come on, Rosa, we should go before...”

“Can I stay here? I know the way back,” I cut in.

Harry looked at me, his eyebrows creased together in thought. “What for?”

“I’m still a little hungry.”

“Ok... I’ll be in the library if you make it out before dinner starts.”

I forced myself to smile at the jibe and Harry left, passing through the portrait hole. Once it was shut, I turned around.

“Kreacher?”

The ugly elf turned back to me.

“What do you know about Sirius Black?”

Chapter 9
The Information

The elf’s beady eyes filled with loathing and derision at the name.

“That horrible blood traitor, tainting the noble and most ancient house of Black. The mistress was glad to rid of him. The moment the scum left the house she wiped his name from existence...” he began to drone, his voice growing more and more angry.

“Did you... serve Sirius?” I breathed, mildly shocked.

Unfortunately. It is because of that Kreacher know he has no children. Who are you?”

“I am Rosa Black.”

His eyes widened. “An unknown Black family member?” His expression went back to lathing and contempt. “A blood traitor that doesn’t deserve the title of Black?” he demanded.

“My father is Regulus Black.”

“Impossible! Master Regulus... died young.” The elf choked on the word.

“You were close with him, weren’t you?” I asked, my demeanour softening slightly.

“Kreacher could’ve saved him, Kreacher was under orders...” the elf began trembling, his eyes glimmering with tears. My eyebrows creased together in confusion.

“How did Regulus die?”

Kreacher refused to speak or look at me.

“I am Rosa Black, 7th year Slytherin, daughter of Regulus Black and Cassiopeia McMillan, daughter of Edward and Lylian McMillan. How did my father die?”

Kreacher trembled. “Master Regulus never...”

“He met my mother in a pub 6 months before his death. It was kept secret – only Merlin knows why, she is a pureblood too – and four months later she found out she was pregnant. The month after she told him, he suddenly disappeared, a few days later he was reported dead. She refused to tell me a thing about his death. All I know about him are the things my mother told me.”

“The Dark Lord murdered master.”

My mouth was half-open, ready to respond, but I didn’t expect that. My mouth was now just hanging half-open as I began to register what Kreacher just said. The Dark Lord... killed my father? A Death Eater?

“Why?” I managed to get out after a minute of silence.

“Kreacher cannot explain...”

Were those tears brimming in his eyes?

“P...please, Kreacher.” I struggled on the word ‘please’; it was foreign to me to have to beg.

“Kreacher has to work... Kreacher cannot say...” He turned around and hurried back to kitchen work.

Tears were building in my eyes. I was so close to finding out a truth I had been yearning for my entire life, and the only thing standing in my way was some lowly house elf. Clenching my jaw, refusing to let my traitorous tears fall, I turned around and exited through the hole, pushing the portrait’s door open. Shutting it behind me, I followed the winding basement corridors upstairs. Just before the staircase that led to the main floor near the Great Hall, I stopped and checked my watch. Sighing, I saw it was 6pm. I didn’t’ feel like getting back to Harry right away, so I figured I could just go upstairs and go back down into the dungeons and hope to Merlin Draco wasn’t there.

I turned the corner and went down a longer staircase and into the dungeons. I hurried down the long and winding corridors until I got to the portrait hole. I passed through it and, naturally, my bad luck hit. I couldn’t take it right now; the tears I had managed to hold back leaked from my eyes as I tried to walk as fast as possible across the corridor.

“What’s wrong, love? Lose your ‘birthday gift’ you claim to hate so much?” Draco watched me walk by, a smirk set on his face.

“In my dreams, Malfoy,” I drawled back. I stopped before the few stairs and turned to face him, my tears staining my face. He was still watching me. “You know what? I take that back.”

Draco’s shocked expression was rather priceless. He seemed to have readied a response, but what I added took him aback, leaving his jaw half-opened.

“If my dreams did come true, I never would’ve gotten that ‘gift’ in the first place.”

With that said, I took my leave, going to the dorms and jumping onto my bed, burying my face into my pillow and letting my tears fall into it, the occasional soft sob muffled by the thick softness. Does that jerk really have a black hole for a heart? Did he have to ruin my day to make himself feel bigger?

Did that stupid elf have to ruin my only chances to find out the truth of my father I’d been seeking for so long?
