‘You irresponsible infants! I mean, Malfoy, why would you do something so foolish? And Granger, I would have expected you to tell him, or do something about it!’ Professor McGonagall’s voice shook with anger. ‘I cannot believe two respectable Prefects would be so stupid. Kicking water at each other, and then having Professor Snape end up in the hospital wing? How old are you?’ She finished.


Neither Draco nor I said anything. We both ended up in Professor McGonagall’s office this time.

‘Professor Snape will now need about a month of recovery time. Oh poor man, 15 different potions to him… Now, I need some time to think of a reasonable punishment, and so will Severus, so in the mean time you two are not to go on the trip to Hogsmeade this Saturday, understood?’

‘Yes Professor McGonagall.’ Malfoy and I said.

‘Now leave and go enjoy the rest of the feast.’ She told us angrily.

We left the office not talking to each other until we were out of ear shot.


‘It’s your entire fault Malfoy! I told you not to do that!’ I hissed at him.

‘Oh whatever. Does it matter that much? This just means Snape won’t be teaching us for a month!’

‘Excuse me? Is that all that matters? What about my reputation? Getting into trouble on the first day of term?’

Malfoy shrugged which made me even angrier that he didn’t care as much as I did.

‘I know you don’t really care, but I do. And you didn’t have to take me down
with you. You should have told Professor McGonagall I warned you not to do that!’

‘But then how would that be funny?’ Malfoy asked with a smirk as we entered the Great Hall together.

I groaned and went to the Gryffindor table.

‘Hermione! What happened?’ Harry asked moving aside so I could sit between him and Ginny.

I wasn’t sure, but I think I saw Ginny give me a dirty look.

‘Well, stupid Malfoy got us into even more trouble.’ I told them what happened.

‘Oh that sucks.’ Carly, who I forgot was even there said in front of us.

‘So you were sorted into Gryffindor then?’ I asked calming down.

‘Yep. It was kind of odd, I had to go with the first years you know. So what’s your punishment?’ She asked.

‘Well, now I can’t go to Hogsmeade this weekend with you guys! And there’s something else but they haven’t told us yet.’ I complained.

‘It’s alright Hermione.’ Harry said squeezing my shoulder. ‘The punishment won’t be too bad I hope.’

‘Well, I have to say thanks Hermione!’ Ron said smiling widely.

‘Why?’ Ginny asked with a puzzled look.

‘No Snape for a month!’ Ron said.

‘Cheers!’ Harry said lifting his goblet.

We finished our feast and went to the Gryffindor Common Room. We all went straight to our dormitories since we were all tired.

I was glad to see my things at the foot of my bed. I would unpack it all tomorrow. I took a quick shower since I was wet and dirty, and then lay down on my four-poster bed.

‘Hey you really are something in this school, huh Hermione?’ Carly asked me lying down on her own bed with a content sigh.

‘What do you mean?’ I asked confused.

‘Well, almost all of the guys had their eyes on you at the feast you know?’ She told me. ‘Harry was so jealous.’

‘Huh.’ I laughed to myself. ‘Never happened before.’

‘You’re really pretty though. If you were in America, I know for a fact that all the guys would be after you.’

I thought about that. Was she serious? Well, I guess I was happy. After 16 years of bushy hair and freckles and blemishes, I was finally getting noticed.

‘Hermione, are you and Harry together?’ Carly asked breaking my happy thoughts.

‘Yes..why?’ I questioned, not really paying attention. My eyes were slowly shutting.

‘Hmm… nothing just nothing. I didn’t think that you were his girlfriend.’

I woke up from the sound of my alarm clock. I didn’t really remember much of the conversation Carly and I had before dozing off, but it seemed to make me wish I remembered. Something about Harry, maybe?

I changed into my school robes and walked downstairs with Carly.

The guys hadn’t woken up yet so we went to breakfast without them.
We received our schedules right away.

‘Hmm, Transfiguration then double Potions with Slytherin again!!’ I groaned.

‘What? Oh yeah, I forgot about those Slytherin students. I guess I’ll see exactly how they are today.’ Carly said sipping her juice.

Harry and Ron arrived at the table and ate a lot of food and checked their schedules as well. ‘I wonder who our Defence teacher will be this year.’ Ron said.

Then Ron, Harry, Carly and I all headed to our first class together.
At the end of Transfiguration, which I did pretty well in I think, Professor McGonagall stopped me on my way out.

‘Go ahead.’ I told the others.

‘I just wanted to let you know, Miss Granger, on Saturday while everyone is at Hogsmeade, you and Mr. Malfoy will be serving detention. Please come straight to my office at ten am sharp. I expect you will pass this on to Draco?’ She said, her eyes looking disappointed.

‘Yes Professor.’ I said and went to Potions.

I entered the cool dungeon and sat down near the back with Harry and the others.

I almost forgot that Professor Snape wouldn’t be teaching today, instead, a short, scrawny man entered the class. He had square glasses on and looked very nervous. Everyone could tell he would be an easy teacher who couldn’t control the class. His withered robes and balding brown hair gave him a poor, tired look.
The class was emptier this year, seeing as most people failed their OWLs, or didn't get a high enough mark. Ron and Harry got Exceeds Expectations, but now since Snape wasn't here to protest, the two were able to get into Potions without an owl.

I glanced over at Draco, just as a reminder about why Snape wasn’t here.

He quickly froze me over with his icy eyes, and then smiled arrogantly as the poor teacher stumbled, most likely from one of the Slytherins jinxes.

‘Wow that was mean!’ Carly said turning around to talk to me. ‘Look, it’s that Draco person. Hmm, you’re saying he’s evil?’

‘Yes, he’s so stupid and rude and spoiled and I hate him he’s always getting away with things.’ I said in one breath, meaning every word, while glaring at him across the room.

‘Oh. But, well, he’s not bad to look at is he? I would so want him as a boyfriend.’ Carly said and made my jaw drop.

‘WHAT?’ I said too loudly, causing many to stare. ‘What?’ I said more quietly.

‘He is hot.’ Carly said gazing at him across the room.

I looked over and saw Malfoy flash a hint of a seductive smile at her.

The scrawny substitute, Professor Jensen, could not as everyone suspected, control our class. The first Potions class of the year was absolute chaos.

‘Hermione, what’s the last potion we have to add?’ Harry asked me loudly. He was partnered with Ron and I was partnered with Carly.

‘Hair of Krumplet!’ I told him over the noise.

We were making some sort of potion, which I barely knew what it did since Jensen never told us. He was standing by Neville’s table, trying to calm the blue bubbles which poured out of Neville’s cauldron.

On my way to the storage cupboard, Draco jinxed me and I almost fell but I pulled out my wand to stop it.

‘MALFOY! You are so lucky Snape isn’t here.’ I said glaring at him.
He simply smirked as Crabbe and Goyle laughed.

‘Oh yeah, just so you know we have detention with McGonagall Saturday at ten am sharp. Stupid git.’ I added and took some ingredients from Snape’s cupboard, which was thoroughly trashed.

Poor Snape would have to clean all this when he came back, all Malfoy’s fault of course.
I went back and Carly and I made the potion correctly I hope.

‘You’re really good at Potions!’ I told her as we left the class.

‘Oh thanks, it was my best and favorite subject at my old school.’ She said.

‘Really? I don’t think you’ll like it much when Snape comes back. What did you think of the Slytherins?’ I asked.

‘Animals. How can you be so…crazy? And disrespectful to a teacher?’ Carly asked me as we entered the Great Hall for lunch.

‘That’s the Slytherins for you.’ I said and sat at the table.

We ate lunch quickly and then went to our next classes which were normal and completely dull compared to Potions, which I have to admit, was pretty fun, even though I usually prefer rules and conduct.

The days seemed extremely short and Saturday, the day I dreaded came.
I went downstairs early to find Harry, Ron and Carly waiting for me.

‘We just wanted to say goodbye.’ Ron said.

‘Yeah, I hope your detention isn’t horrible.’ Harry grinned and kissed me.

‘This is my first time to Hogsmeade and you’re leaving me with the boys!’ Carly joked and hugged me. ‘Have fun in detention! With that hottie Malfoy.’ She whispered quietly while hugging me.

I rolled my eyes and saw Ginny come down.

‘Hey guys!’ She said happily. ‘Can I tag along with you to Hogsmeade?’ She asked smiling at Harry.

Carly looked around and I could swear she gave Ginny a dirty look. I was glad she did.

‘Sure Gin.’ Harry said.

I felt like smacking Harry just then.

‘Great! So I guess we should get going then?’ Ginny asked. ‘Oh, see you Hermione, sorry about the detention.’ She added glancing at me with a pitiful smile, which was so fake.

I felt like smacking her now. They left the Common Room, Carly turning around and rolling her eyes at Ginny as they exited through the portrait hole.
I sighed and left a while later. It wasn’t ten yet, so I went to breakfast but didn’t eat much.

I decided to be a bit early and went to McGonagall’s office.

‘Come in.’ I heard her voice say and I entered.

I waited, and waited. Malfoy wasn’t there, and it was five after ten. If he forgot, and then blames it on me.. I’m going to kill him!!

Twenty minutes go by and Malfoy still isn’t here.

‘Miss Granger, did you tell Mr. Malfoy about the detention? And the exact time?’ Professor McGonagall asked me.

‘Yes Professor.’ I replied.

Professor McGonagall shook her head looking furious and just then, guess who decided to waltz in.

‘Ah, Mr. Malfoy. Do you see that clock right there? And do you remember what time Hermione told you to be here?’

McGonagall asked Draco sternly, who looked merely relaxed.

‘Yeah, sorry Professor, I was visiting Professor Snape in the Hospital wing to apologize for our behaviour the other day. I have a note here. He isn’t doing all that well, all because of Hermione and I. I feel so terrible.’ Draco put his head down sorrowfully and then handed Professor McGonagall the note, which was probably fake.

Boy could he talk. He had me believing he truly felt guilty, but I knew a little better.

‘Oh, it’s alright Malfoy. Come along you two.’ Professor McGonagall said, seeming as though she had a change of heart. She barely glanced at the note before tossing it out.
Draco smiled mischievously at me as we went into the hall.

‘Your punishment today is to clean the charms classroom. Peeves got in and wrote some vulgar language and did a lot of…’ McGonagall sniffed disapprovingly yet made me suspicious. ‘Damage. Ahem, you shall see for yourself. You both are to clean everything up. With your skills in magic, I doubt it will be quick seeing as the mess is made using charms and spells. It shouldn’t take you past dinner, but once you’ve done the best you could, come get me and I’ll see if it is worthy. Have fun.’

Professor McGonagall then left us outside of the Charms
classroom.

I looked over at Malfoy who was leaning on the wall casually.

‘Well, are you going to open the door, or stare at me all day?’ He asked with a conceited smile.

I scoffed at him and opened the door.
