At that moment, I wanted to tell her my feelings about her, about my longings, about how she edged my dreams. I opened my mouth to say something. Then I closed it again. I couldn’t bring myself to say those things. I guess I had too much pride in myself to admit it. “You’re a good kisser,” I finally blurted, sneering in a teasing but not yet comforting way. Then I sauntered away.

I replayed the kiss over and over again in my head as I walked to the Slytherin common room. It was so sweet, so different than the other kisses I’d delivered in the past. The kiss I gave to Gra—Hermione was something more than a one-time snog. I hoped.

My mind was still swimming in thoughts when I entered the common room. Luckily, no one was there, so I could gather up my feelings for a while.

After a couple of hours of simply lying on the green sofa, I decided that I had to grasp the opportunity and show Hermione that I really did care, and I was softer on the inside than anyone knew.

“Follow the directions on the board,” Professor Snape instructed, and with a wave of his wand words appeared. “Since this is a harder potion, you will be in partners.” The class began turning to each other to ask whether they wanted to be their partners. “Silence,” Snape commanded, shooting death glares at students who were signaling each other. “To save you the trouble,” he sneered, “I will be selecting the partners.” There was an audible groan. It was a well-known fact that Snape paired students up with other students they didn’t know. He claimed it was so that you wouldn’t fool around while working.

“Crabbe and Potter, you two are partners. Goyle and Mr. Weasley, you’re a group. And Miss. Granger and Malfoy, you’re together.” Snape continued to match students up. I didn’t know what to think. Me with Draco? If this happened a year ago, I would have been one sulky individual. But now, I didn’t find the idea that horrible.

Slowly, I got up and walked to his table. Of course, he wouldn’t want to move from his spot. He smirked (now it was almost a smile) when I set my books down beside his. “Destiny, eh?” He mumbled under his breath.

I rolled my eyes and skimmed the directions from the board. “Ok, we need mandrake roots, a stirring rod, one cauldron…” I listed off the supplies as he gathered them from the nearby cupboards. Then I laid them out neatly in front of us.

The potion worked pretty well, and I was satisfied with how it was going. Draco wasn’t as bad at potions as I thought.

“Time’s up,” Snape announced in his slick voice. “Cork your cauldrons, clean up, and place them on my desk. You will be required to give me an explanation of your potion. I am expecting fifty inches.” The whole class erupted in a groan. “No using books from the restricted section.”

Draco reached over me to grab the cork. He sure smelled nice. I took it before he did and handed it to him. “Thanks,” he said, running his hand across mine before taking the cork and closing the cauldron. His touch sent shivers up my arm.

I carried my books back to the table I shared with Harry and Ron. They were chatting about how their potions went. “Goyle’s as dumb as a doornail,” Ron grumbled to Harry.

Harry only snorted. “Crabbe’s no better, you know.”

Ron looked at me. “But I think ‘Mione got the worst of the deal. Malfoy must be a pain to work with.”

I only shrugged. “He’s okay.” Their faces were questioning and unbelieving. “Really,” I assured them, as well as myself.
