An update!

Draco

Uproarious cheers signaled the beginning of the first Quidditch match of the season: Gryffindor versus Slytherin. Across the stadium where the Ravenclaws were seated, I instantly noticed some blonde Ravenclaw’s roaring lion hat and Professor Umbridge. Us players zoomed out onto the pitch, looking confident.

The game went in a blur. The score ricocheted back and forth between Slytherin and Gryffindor. I still couldn’t find the snitch yet, and I knew Harry couldn’t spot it either. I flew higher, then swooped low, then high again. I flew in Granger’s direction and hovered in the air. Our eyes met for a moment. . A fleeting feeling in my stomach came, and I swear as I zoomed off again, a hint of a smile played on Granger’s face.

With that in mind, I made sure that I’d make the best out of this Quidditch match.

Hermione

“I can’t believe it! You’re banned from Quidditch?” I exclaimed angrily when Harry told me the news.

Harry nodded mournfully. “That Umbridge woman just took away me and the Weasley twins’ brooms and has them chained in her office. I mean, who does she think she is? All the Slytherins had to do was write lines, and we have a life-long ban!” He punched the couch arm.

“I’m really sorry, Harry,” I sympathized. I didn’t know what else to say. Evidently, neither did Ron.

Harry stood up abruptly. “I’m going to my room,” he droned. Without another word, he banged up the stairs and slammed his dormitory door shut behind him.

I turned to Ron. He shrugged his shoulders helplessly. “I’ll try to cheer him up,” he offered meekly. “He still likes chocolate frogs, doesn’t he?”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m going to the library,” I decided aloud. Whenever I was mad, I entertained my mind by working. It pushed the matter away for a while. Besides, there was a section in the library where prefects could help out the younger students with homework.

My footfalls make hollow sounds on the floor. In no time, I was entering through the wide doors of Hogwarts’ Library. Madame Pince glimpsed up from her desk, saw me, and allowed me to pass. I was probably her most consistent visitor. Turning a corner, I spotted several first-year students scratching their heads over large pieces of parchment.

Nonchalantly walking over, I cleared my throat. Both heads looked up. “Er…” I began. “Do any of you need help?”

One head nodded eagerly. The other shook his head. “I already have someone helping me.”

“Alright. I’ll start with you…” I strolled over to a robust-looking Hufflepuff. “What’s your name?”

The Hufflepuff gazed up at me with large, green eyes. “Becky.” Her voice was more confident than most Hufflepuffs’.

“What do you need help with, Becky?” I glanced down at her paper, which was mainly blank except for a few words.

“I have to write an essay ten inches long on bezoars for potions class,” Becky explained wearily. “But I don’t know where to begin. Is Hogwarts really this hard?”

I chuckled. “I can assure you, this is just the beginning.” Her eyes widened. “But don’t worry. You’ll do fine, as long as you try your best.”

A cold voice came from a few feet away. “Don’t listen to Granger. She’s just always been too smart for her own good.”

Granger looked up to see me staring maliciously back. “And why are you here?” she inquired, obviously trying to keep her voice as level as she could. I loved the look on her face when she got angry. Somehow, it didn’t distort her features very horridly.

“The same reason that you are, Granger,” I replied coolly. “And—“

“Well, if you’ll excuse us, we’re trying to work,” she cut me off tartly, turning back to the little Hufflepuff she was helping. The Hufflepuff’s eyes darted from me to Granger, and back and forth. I grinded my jaw. No one ever interrupted me, not if I could help it.

“Erm…that’s okay. I’ll just figure it out by myself. Thanks anyway.” With that, the Hufflepuff forced a meek smile, gathered her parchment and quill hastily, and dashed out of the library.

Granger faced me angrily. “Look what you did, Malfoy! You scared her off.” Her nostrils flared.

I only sneered. “Like I said, I like to drive you up the wall. Mudblood.”

The other first-year boy who had been working stopped mid-sentence. He had clearly never heard anyone call anyone else that name before. Nervously but quickly, he too swept his things into his arms and made a beeline for the library exit door.

I leered at the boy’s back as he retreated. Idiotic first year. They got scared at everything.

“You shouldn’t be a prefect, you know,” Granger growled. “What example can you set for the younger students, anyway?” She sat on a low desk beside her.

“I can teach them, no matter how a mudblood looks…” my eyes swept up and down her body, lingering on her chest, “they still are only mudbloods.” I spat the last word out like a filthy swear word.

A tear glistened in the corner of her eye. “Why do you do that? Why do you always call me that?” It was almost a whisper. She sniffed.

A single tear trickled down her cheek. Brushing it away quickly, she looked away and stood up, making her way towards the library exit door.

“Hey,” I called to her huskily, and rather awkwardly, falling in step behind her. “Don’t cry, Granger. It’s nothing. Just a name.” I didn’t want her to act this way towards me.

Shaking her head, she quickened her pace and pushed open the door. “Granger!” I called again, trying not to sound too mean. But I guess no matter how hard I tried, it still came out as a taunt. She shook her head and ran down the hallway.

I've been waiting for your next post, but i can see it was worth the wait.
I was quite surprised with Hermione weeping infront of Draco and, correct me if i'm wrong, i take it as a sign that she's exposing herself a little to let him come closer. She is ready to let him in now. I wonder how you are going to handle the inner battle in Hermione's head of falling, seriously perhaps, in love with a traditional enemy.
And Draco's softening up...really interesting. And it does make sense to me. After all Draco is, among other things, a classical case of bad upbringing and unfortunate family background. I like it.
Please keep up the good work, even if it means for us to wait a little.
