Hermione stirred. She yawned and sat up in bed.
"Wow.....what a horribe dream...." She looked around, and noticed that her books weren't around her. She wasn't in her room. She was...at the hospital wing? "Whoa!"
She peered around the room, looking for a familiar face.
"OUCH! Not so hard!"
"Sit still Mr. Malfoy! I told you this wasn't going to be pleasant!"
Hermione's eyes fell on Draco, who was getting his eye checked by Madam Pomfrey. He was squirming around on his chair, and Pomfrey was getting frustrated. Draco looked over, and saw that Hermione was awake.
"Hermione! You're awake!" He leapt off the chair and took her hand.
"Well, why wouldn't I be? And why am I in the hospital wing?"
"You...erm....kinda got beaned on the head..." Draco said tactfully.
"How?"
"Um...well....Harry kinda...socked you a good one." Hermione looked an him incredulously.
"Impossible. C'mon Draco, tell me what really happened. Harry's away."
Dracp looked away. Hermione looked at him queerly.
"Draco....what are you hiding from me?"
"Harry...came by the school and...you really can't remember?"
Hermione gave him a Look. "Draco, just tell me."
"Fine. Harry came by the school....and he...beat me up."
Hermione gasped. "You're kidding. Why?"
Draco looked at her square in the eye. "Because he thought you were cheating on him with me."
Hermione fell back on her bed, devestated. She placed her hand over her eyes. She let out a deep sigh.
"Where is Harry now?"
"In Professor McGonagall's office."
"I've got to talk to him. And her." She climbed out of bed, unsteadily. Draco caught her as she teetered.
"Hermione, please, get back in bed. Madam Pomfrey-"
"Leave me alone Draco. We'll talk later." Hermione slowly made her way to The Headmistresses office.

Harry gasped at McGonagall's words.
"Ex...expell me? But...but Professor-"
"No buts Mr. Potter. Muggle fighting is not tolerated in my school. Especially for a reason that has not been proven. Now-"
"Professor!" A voice schoed throughtout the chamber. McGonagall looked around, confused. Harry did likewise. "Professor it's me, Hermione! Oopen up!"
"Of course Miss Granger." The door opened, and Hermione flew in, her eyes in a daze. Harry caught her as she fell.
"Hermione! What are you doing out of bed? You-"
"Professor, please. Don't do anything bad to Harry! We weren't-he wasn't-it was-" She collapsed on the ground in a dead faint. Harry stared credulously at Hermione, then at McGonagall. She was equally amazed.
"Well Mr. Potter, it looks as if I have some thinking to do. Please escort Miss Granger here back to her room. And tell Mr. Malfoy...without killing him...that I need to see him as soon as possible. Understood?"
"Yes Professor." Harry replied, and took Hermione in his arms, and carried her back to their room.

Draco dragged his way up to his room, when he ran into Harry. He looked at him with tired eyes.
"Harry....I don't care....I just want to get in my room, ok?"
"No." Harry blocked his way, Hermione still in his arms.
"Alright...I'll bite, why?"
"Because Professor McGonagall wants to see you." Harry said shortly, and entered the Common Room. Draco sighed, and limped down to her office.
"Well, Mr. Malfoy, feeling a little under the weather?" She asked, concerned.
"Just a little, ma'am. Is there a problem?"
"Well, quite frankly, yes Mr. Malfoy. Tell me what happened between you and Harry. Now."
Draco sighed, and retold his story. McGonagall tapped her wand against her desk, but didn't utter a word.
"What do you think I should do with him, Mr. Malfoy?" Draco started at the responsibility being flung at him.
"Well, Professor...I don't want to be in on that decision. I don't like Harry, but I do know that Hogwarts is the closest thing he's ever had to having a home. I think it's be murder, trying to take it away from him."
"A well thought out decision. It was, in fact, the one I was planning to make. But he still needs a punishment. I'm sending him a week's worth of detentions. Now, I won't have you send him this message, I'll talk to him personally. Go back to your room and rest, Mr. Malfoy."
"Thank you Professor." Draco left, exhausted.

Harry set Hermione on her bed. He started to leave, but she called out to him in her sleep.
"....Harry...Draco....no....don't hurt...AHH!" She leapt up in bed, and Harry rushed to her side. "HARRY!"
"Hermione, hush....it's me." Harry soothed her, rubbing her back as she cried into his shoulder. "Hermione....please, don't cry..."
"No, I have to...I'm a terrible girlfriend..."
"No, no your not...please stop crying?"
"No, I'm a bad girlfriend, I-"
"Sorry to inturrupt." Draco stood in the doorway. "But it's past curfew, and as I am still Head Boy, you have to leave. Potter."
Harry got up from Hermione's bed, and went past Draco, wrenching his shoulder away so it wouldn't touch him. Draco rolled his eyes and went to Hermione's side.
"Are you alright?" He held her hand.
"N-n-n-o..."Hermione hitched. "I almost told him...about u-u-us."
"I understand." Draco said, with a heavy heart. "And....I understand if you want to stay with Harry. He cares about you, that's for sure."
"I know." Hermione said quietly, and put her head on Draco's shoulder. "But do I care about him?"

Draco fell asleep easily. He had never been more tired in his life. He settled down under his sheets, and soon his breathing was regular.
Suddenly, there was a shriek. Draco bolted upright in bed. There was another shriek, but this one had a name.
"DRACO!" Draco flew out of bed and to Hermione's room. She was shaking and crying. Draco wrapped his arms around her, and shushed her.
"Hermione...please...you'll wake up the whole damn castle if you keep this up....hush baby, please..."
"D-D-Drac-co," Hermione shuddered, "He-he hurt y-you..."
"Yes Hermione, but I'm fine, please, calm down." Draco rocked her back and forth. Hermione's shudders ceased, and soon she stopped crying. "There, that's better."
"Draco....I'm sorry, I caused all of this." Hermione's hazel eyes bore deep into his steel grey ones. "It's my fault."
"No it's not, Love. It's mine. If only I hadn't fallen in love with you, you'd be happy with Harry, and I'd still be in the Slytherin Common Room." Draco tried to change her mind, but she was adament.
"No, I allowed myself to fall in love with you too, Draco. I didn't realize how much I loved you until after you were gone and I was with Harry. It's all so confusing." She layed her head on Draco's shoulder.
Draco stroked her shoulder, then her back. They sat like that, until Hermione's eyes began to droop. Draco kept stroking her.
"Hermione, you should get some sleep-"
"No." Hermione's eyes flew open. "Not by myself. When I'm alone...the nightmares come. I don't want to be alone."
"What nightmares?" Draco asked.
"They're...it's always me running, running across a field, towards you. Then I fall halfway. But your there to catch me. And everything's wonderful."
"That doesn't sound too much like a nightmare, Hermione." Draco pointed out.
"But it changes. Then there's Harry, looking accusedly at us. Then there's pain, and I cry out. Then, the next thing I remember, it was you. I'm so glad it was you. But I keep seeing Harry's face...that look of hurt..."
"I'll sit up with you." Draco sat on the chair in her room. "See?"
Hermione started to close her eyes, but atill looked suspiciously at Draco. He sat there until she was fully asleep. He slowly got up and left the room. Hermione stirred, but didn't wake. Draco climbed into his own bed and fell asleep.
"DRACO! HELP!" Draco's eyes flew open, and he ran to Hermione's room once more.
"Hermione! What-"
"It came back! It came back!" She sobbed into her hands." The-the dream. You p-p-promised..." She sobbed harder. Draco went back onto the bed and held her.
"You were asleep Hermione. I need to sleep too, you know."
"Then stay here, please?" Hermione pleaded, looking once more into his eyes. "For me?"
Draco sighed. "Only if you promise to stay asleep."
"As long as your here." Hermione compromised, then turned over on her side and fell asleep. Draco rolled his eyes.
"Why not? I gotta...sleep...too..." Draco yawned, and slid in next to Hermione. Eventually, he, too, fell asleep, and his arms curled around Hermione's waist, and Hermione's hand traveled to his hands, and that's how they spent the night. | |
