Default The Hut of Pierson Fuller-Thompson

Welcome to the Hut and Office of the Groundskeeper, Charms Professor and Slytherin Head of House, Pierson Fuller-Thompson. You can make an appointment to see him by sending him an owl, or you can just stop by the hut and see if he's in. However, he's going to be quite the busy man if he's going to keep up with lessons, Slytherins and the grounds.

If you would like to see Professor Fuller, please knock a few times first. If he answers, you're welcome to come in. Otherwise, it would be wise to come back later or leave him a note.

Once inside the hut, you'll notice that it's looking a bit different than it did back in the old days and probably even different than last term. It's been modified to fit Piers' style, but also to accommodate his life. When you walk in, you'll see a small kitchenette with a tea kettle on the stove. Next to it is a wood burning fireplace, and across from that is a nice couch. If you look up, you'll see a loft. That's where glorious naps happen. Under the loft, you'll find a nice seating area, a small dining room table and another couch, all adorned with flannel to keep the man and his guests warm during the cold months.

Make yourself comfortable. But, of course, not too comfortable. He is busy, you know.

Nina Castillo was never one to purposefully seek a Professor outside of lessons, nor was she one to seek their assistance during the lesson either. In fact, she preferred it when her Professors didn't take notice of her at all. This was all to say that her presence on the other side of Professor Fuller-Thompson's hut was quite peculiar. She wouldn't have been here if it weren't absolutely necessary and unfortunately she couldn't take any more of this.

Feeling rather tense, the Slytherin stood quietly behind the door. With each moment that had passed, she had made an entirely new decision. First, to knock. Second, not to knock. Third, to run away and pretend she had never come in the first place. Fourth, to knock very adamantly. Fifth to cry. She would probably cry regardless.

But in the end, she opted for a knock. One that was hardly audible and quite timid.

Piers was in his hut, cooking up some food on his extremely tiny stove when he heard a knock on his door. At least, he was pretty sure it was a knock. Rather quiet. Maybe a first year.

For a while, he thought that living on the grounds meant that he was exiled from the rest of the school. No one really came to visit that often.. but at the same time that wasn't REALLY a terrible thing. It was rather peaceful when tweens weren't screaming outside of his hut about bugs and other tween-related fears.

"Door's open!" he called out, dumping some beans from his pot into his bowl. A delicious snack of beans. Maybe he should make toast...

Sixth to turn around right now as he probably hadn't heard the--

It had been wishful thinking. The fourth year took a deep breath to compose herself, which she did a mighty fine job of she was sure of it, before opening the door and walking in. Leaving a door open was an absolute ridiculous idea. How would these Professors have any way of warding off unwanted company. Then there were the students who enjoyed pulling pranks. Nina crinkled her nose at all of them, but there were quite a few in the castle. With a door left open, they could waltz right in. She disapproved very much. Nina had thought otherwise, but perhaps their Head of House didn't have proper wits about him and this meeting would be an absolute waste.

Though it was far too late now as she had already entered his... hut. It was quite quaint. How did he get any proper work done around here? Immediately she noticed the smell. Something was cooking and it was not very pleasant. She crinkled her nose slightly as she turned her head to see her Head of House... In his... kitchen? It looked far more like a kitchen for an elf than one for a full-grown adult. She had many questions for this man. None of which were the real reason why she was here.

After a prolonged moment of staring, Nina finally opted for a greeting. "Hello, Professor Fuller-Thompson," she wasn't really sure what to do or where to go from here. Surely he'd tell her where to sit as this was making her rather uncomfortable.

Sure, beans weren't the GREATEST smelling thing in the world, but the look on the girl's face made it seem like she was smelling a pair of stinky boots. Or maybe that was just her face. What did the kids call it - RBF???

Piers dumped his beans onto his two pieces of toast - and yes, his tiny kitchen was quite crowded with just him and a small pot, but there was a table and some seating right to the left of her that she could make herself comfortable in. Instead, she was just staring at him. And he was just.. dumping his beans.

Ah, there was the hello. "Hello," he said in reply, grabbing his plate and his glass of water. He moved over to the table by the door and gestured for her to grab a chair as well. "You wanna sit?" Or stand awkwardly by the door? He was aware that this could either be a ten second meeting or an hour. "What can I do for you?" Because he wanted to know what he was in for. Most students didn't come to his door because they were HAPPY. It usually meant that they had a problem.

It was a combination of both, for the record.

.... Not that she was judging his eating habit (she was), but was he really eating beans... with... toast? He did know they had a kitchen in the castle fully equipped with house elves who knew how to cook excellent meals, right? And yet here he was, with bean-toast. It looked absolutely revolting. Nina had several opinions, and none of them were pleasant ones. Here they were, Professor in cramped kitchen holding disgusting bean-toast, Nina just outside of kitchen staring at said Professor and disgusting bean-toast. Uncomfortable was hardly enough to do the circumstance justice.

The Slytherin eyed the table for a moment, considering her options. "Yes," is what she opted for before moving towards it and pulling out a chair. At least he was direct and straight-to-the point. That was one good thing he had going for him. It was hardly redeeming, but perhaps he could work on it. "I would like to transfer into another House."

A simple request, really.

The only thing better than the cooking of Hogwarts' house elves was the cooking of Piers' husband. But unfortunately, his husband couldn't come bring him food all the time. But it was fine. He DID eat well, most of the time. This was purely a snack of beany indulgence.

Piers took a seat on a squeaky chair across the table from one of the students he was in charge of while she... seemingly decided whether or not she wanted to stay. But she sat. Good. Piers took a bite of his toast, some saucy beans spilling onto the plate below it. It was the nature of the snack.

And finally, the purpose of the visit was out in the air. Piers wasn't completely surprised by the request, but it was his first. It had been a few months since the start of term now. Perhaps her housemates were getting on her nerves. Slytherins could be REAL pains in the rear some time. Piers dabbed his mouth with a napkin and cleared his throat, his expression remaining neutral the entire time.

"Alright. Why?" And while she answered, he ate more bean toast.

His snack standard was seriously lacking. But to each their own. If he was perfectly fine to indulge in bean-toast, then who was Nina to judge? That didn’t mean she wouldn’t do it, but at least she would keep her thoughts to herself. It was a capacity some of her classmates ought to develop. Though none of these matters were of importance at the moment, of course. She hadn’t come here to discuss her Head of House’s eating habits, nor was she here to make recommendations for the behaviors of her classmates. Perhaps those subjects could be revisited at a later time.

Nina watched Professor Fuller-Thompson almost studiously, her eyes following the beans which spilled out from between his toast. He wasn’t helping to convince her of its appeal, though he likely wasn’t intending to. He seemed to have very little concern for what his students thought of him. That was another thing he had going for him, perhaps. Too many of the other adults in this castle were bent on people-pleasing. Professors were meant to be educators, not friends. Again, none of these were thoughts she planned on sharing.

Her focus shifted to the man’s question, as her eyes left the bean dump on his plate. She was far more interested in analyzing his reaction than in staring at neglected bean-sauce. He didn’t look surprised, which was promising if anything. Nor did he immediately shut down the request, which could either be a positive sign or could mean that she was about to waste her time with an explanation he wouldn’t really consider. She had been expecting his question, however, and had thus thought about it in excruciating depth. The Slytherin knew quite well that she couldn’t give him the true reason, as he would most probably encourage the dormitory to make amends with one another. Or worse, he’d make them undergo some sort of friendship seminar, team building program, or some other variant of time-wasting activities which wouldn’t change anything about the dynamic of the fourth year dormitory.

If he were another Professor, she might have tried crying. But she wasn’t entirely sure how he would fare with tears, as he seemed to be the type who could not be perturbed by an emotional student. And so instead, she thought to give the logical route an attempt, very well knowing that her chances were slim and he would probably send her off with a ‘you can do it’ stamped across her forehead. It was still worth trying. She could be very convincing if she wanted to be. ”The hat told me that I would excel in Ravenclaw, but I didn’t listen,” and besides, she wasn’t lying. ”I’ve realized now that it was a mistake. My Slytherin classmates and I have different goals. I’d be far more motivated in Ravenclaw House. It’d push me to maximize my potential. My growth is stifled in Slytherin.” She wore a very serious face.

Nina had given this plenty of thought as well. Gryffindors were thoughtless and rogue, she would hate having to be surrounded by them at all hours. It would be a life of complete torture, especially as she valued personal space and quiet. Two things that students in the House of Courage knew nothing about. Hufflepuff would have been a viable choice had it not been for Celine. She was a part of the problem. Sharing a room with Celine would feel no different than sharing a room with Eloise. Only somehow, Celine was even dimmer than her Slytherin counter-part. While the Ravenclaws in her year, such as Trinetta Gladin and Chloe McCarthy, were far too eager and chatty, they were better than any other alternative. Their optimism was excessive and they could both use a lesson in moderation, but Nina would have to make some sacrifices in the end. And as such, Ravenclaw was her plan a.

Plan b was crying.

This girl... stared a lot. Did she realize? Piers was just trying to enjoy his bean toast in piece, but the eyes of a teenage girl were boring into his soul and it was making him mildly uncomfortable. But it was also amusing. He wondered how much THOUGHT the girl had going on in her head. He could practically hear her brain churning.

When she spoke, he listened, but made very little eye contact. He was very invested in this toast. And when she finally admitted the reason for her visit - the desire to change houses - Piers' expression remained pretty much the same as it had before. She wanted to leave Slytherin because her "goals" didn't line up with her housemates, which, to Piers, sounded like "I don't like my housemates".

Regardless, Piers listened, nodding to signify that he was indeed listening, let her words sink in for a moment, and took a few gulps of water before responding. "You know all the House stuff is a load of beetle dung, right?" He paused and gave her a look. "If you wanna be a Ravenclaw, just hang out with more Ravenclaws. Surround yourself with people who challenge and motivate you." Duh.

Also, she was a teenager and she was probably being dramatic and he wasn't going to move her into a different house.

She did have a lot of thought going on in her head, something else her classmates ought to adopt. They're lives would be far more productive if they actually thought before they acted, they'd spend far less time invested in activities that were a complete waste. As far as Nina was concerned, however, it looked like the only thing Professor Fuller-Thompson was concerned with was his bean-toast. He didn't even look that invested in the conversation they were having here and this was highly bothersome. In order to gain what she wanted, Nina really needed his empathy. Facts and logic were useful in most circumstances, but this one needed the sympathy vote as well.

His nodding was slightly reassuring, but the words that followed his thoughtful silence were like rocks being thrown at her perfectly constructed argument. Nina's face fell. Everything about her features became slightly stretched out, from the frown on her face to the widening of her eyes. How could he say that? Weren't Professors meant to make you 'buy in' on the House dichotomies? What was the point of splitting them up if none of it truly mattered?

This was the basis for her entire argument and it had been deconstructed in the matter of a single sentence. Nina was absolutely distraught. And instead of forming words, her lips simply trembled.

"Okay," was the word she managed to get out. Meanwhile, she was focused on staring ahead and blinking back the tears that were forming in her eyes. She didn't want to go back to a common room with Eloise and Karlin.

Ah, jeez. She was a crier, wasn't she? Despite the interest in his bean toast, Piers saw that lip tremble, and he saw the rapid blinking that was an attempt to stifle the tears - it never really worked did it? Regardless of how Piers may have seemed, he didn't want the girl to cry. 1) because it made him uncomfortable and 2) it made him unCOMFORTABLE.

Piers set down his bean toast. It was serious talk time. In truth, her argument was well constructed, but... if that was her true argument, then his advice should have sufficed. The tears implied that there was something deeper behind the reason she gave.

"Look," he said gently, scooting away his bean toast plate and resting his arms on the table. "It's common to feel... misplaced in your own house. We all have a variety of traits and habits that guide the sorting hat one way or another. If you truly feel like you would relate to Ravenclaws more, then my honest advice is to seek them out and spend more time with them." Piers took a pause and watched her, but he was sure that his repetition wouldn't help her. "Unless, of course... there is another reason behind your desire to leave Slytherin house." Piers tried to do his best to be aware of the ongoings of his house, but so much happened in teen drama that he didn't know about - and quite frankly did not care to know about.

He continued gently, treading carefully. He didn't want tears. "As your head of house, I want you to feel like you can be honest with me. If there's an issue with your housemates, perhaps we can resolve it." Another pause. "But if it really is just that your goals just differ from your housemates too much, then we can move on." Differing goals didn't make people cry. But then again, she was a teenager, so who knew? But... he just had a feeling. And he would let her choose which option she wanted to go with.

Yes, yes she was a crier. Coincidentally, being a crier was the literal reason why she was in this mess to begin with. Not this mess being the strange bean-toast, student-Professor staring-standoff. This mess being whatever was possessing Karlin and Eloise to ensue hell upon Nina Castillo's perfectly constructed (and perfectly crumbling) life. But in a matter of moments, the bean-toast had been forgotten on the plate, and Nina's lips were trembling EVEN MORE because Professor Fuller-Thompson was using his actual Head of House voice now.

Despite the fact that his words were literally useless (in her humble opinion, anyway), she nodded. Anyway, she was only half listening at this point as her problem had nothing to do with the sorting, nor the house, itself. Tears threatened to leave her eyes. Until he said THAT. That thing he said with the voice that meant he knew what was actually going on. The one that meant he would pretend as if he didn't know what was going on, when he really did.

It was the perfect opportunity to voice her concerns. Which meant that Nina Castillo would not voice her concerns. "No," she replied quickly, shaking her head as if to be more convincing. The whole situation had sobered her up very quickly. She had gone from the literal almost mass exodus of tears to completely and tragically fINE within the matter of mere seconds. Not because the tears had been fake (they were real), but because her vulnerability was quite selective.

After a moment of silence, where she took the time to fully digest his words, she nodded. "Thank you, Professor." Honestly at the end of all this, she ultimately felt defeated. Her plan had failed, despite how well she had thought it out. And that was the worst feeling of all. Never mind the whole Eloise thing. Nina Castillo didn't get her way. "We can move on," because there wasn't anything else she could possibly use to get out of this. She had already run all the options through her head.

He could get back to his gross bean-toast now.

It was still incredibly unappealing. For the record.

There was a fifty percent chance they were going to talk about feelings, and Piers, being a middle aged man and once retired professor, was kind of done dealing with teenage feelings. However, it was his duty and responsibility as Slytherin head of house to help out his students as best he could, so... if the coin landed on the feelings side, he would deal with it, for his student's sake.

With that being said, Piers did feel a slight sense of relief when the girl said no, implying that there were no underlying issues with her housemates like he had suggested. That, or she was lying, which teenagers also tended to do. But at that point, there was nothing he could do, so he nodded and sat back in his chair.

"Alright," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. "We'll move on then. I can always offer you extended assignments to help... challenge your education." You know, if that's really what she wanted.

Listen, Tag had no interest in wasting anyone's time - not the professor's, and certainly not his own. For the first half of the school year, the boy had observed. Watched. Waited. It wasn't always entirely intentional - the Ravenclaw just happened to be out and about, taking a walk, going for a run, and trying to sneak playtime with his dogs when Tag didn't think the professor was in. To the groundskeeper, it may have just seemed like coincidences that Tag was around when he was either arriving or leaving his hut, and a significant portion of the time, it was.

But Tag was keeping track. The guy's schedule was largely erratic and seemingly unpredictable, but there were tell-tale signs that he was in his hut. In this case, today, he had simply seen him walking the dogs no less than thirty minutes ago. The dogs always went back to the hut, and the guy wasn't always that quick to get back up to the castle when he needed to be. He took his time, as if he didn't entirely want to be going wherever he was going, and Tag was approximately eighty-nine percent certain that Fuller-Thompson was still behind the door upon which he lifted a hand to knock.

Knock, knock, knock.

He exhaled a slow, visible breath into the stinging winter air. For the briefest of moments, he considered bolting, but it wouldn't work out well on the grounds like it did in the hallways of the castle. So, he planted his feet firmly in place, swallowed his pride, and focused on appearing less anxious than he felt.

She was absolutely lying. And she was also at least 67% certain that her Professor was aware of it. Nina did, however, feel a sense of relief knowing that he wouldn't press her on it though. Unlike Professor Beryl. She really ought to take a page out of his book.

... "That won't be necessary," she replied rather quickly. Not because she didn't want extra assignments (truthfully that sounded like a wonderful idea, as she was already weeks ahead on her current assignments), but because she didn't want anyone knowing that she actually wanted more work. If anything, telling Professor Fuller-Thompson that she wasn't being challenged in her house was already a risk. If others found out she would truly be labeled as a 'nerd'. It was the opposite of what she wanted.

"I'll find other means." Because the last thing she needed was for him to get involved in her life. As it seemed, he had already been a big waste of her time. "Thank you for meeting with me, Professor." She glanced back down to his bean-toast. Ew. Still ew.

This time around, Pierson was not indulging in his bean toast snack, but was sat at his dining room table/desk with a few papers scattered on it. He had been working on an upcoming lesson plan and finalizing a couple activities when a knock came at his door. The fire crackled as he stood and made way to the door.

Opening it up, he saw a young man standing outside in the cold. He wasn't one of his own, that was for sure. This boy didn't look... entirely familiar. But to be fair, there were a million kids at this school and sometimes he could barely keep track of the ones that belonged to his house.

"Hello," Piers said eventually, opening the door further. "Would you like to come in?" Because it was cold outside and Piers had hot tea, if he wanted some.

Her denial of the extra "challenge" of more work only solidified in his mind that the reason she vocalized to him was not the real reason behind her desire to change houses. But you know what? He couldn't help her if she didn't want him to. She was a big girl. She could either take care of her problems like one... or ignore them.

"Alright then," he said simply with a slight shrug. "Just let me know if you change your mind about anything." He wasn't going to offer her a shoulder to cry on or a therapy session, but he WAS there for her if she needed him.

Yes, well, she was choosing to ignore them. It was far easier than snitching on her classmates and landing herself into more trouble with them behind Professors' backs. Telling someone would just land her into even more trouble. Eloise's pranks would surely worsen and Nina would much rather avoid that, if possible.

"I will. Thank you, Professor," though the look on her face conveyed everything but appreciation. He had just wasted a good fifteen minutes of her life which she would never get back. So much for the genius plan. This did nothing but solidify the fact that she was absolutely stuck in this dreadful situation for good. Eloise would be too pleased. She eyed his gross bean-toast one last time before making her way to the door.
