A good resource if you want a genuine sounding British character, but you're not sure about the surname you have chosen, is to try British Surnames and Surname Profiles. It has information from the Census, and tells you how common the name is, what the name means, where in Britian it is most likely to be found and the surname etymology.

It also has a random name generator, to give you options that you may not have considered.
