When I first saw Neville in the second film, I hadn't read the books so I found him to be this endearingly clumsy person. When I read about his backstory with regards to what happened with his parents, I liked him more. He isn't my absolute favourite character but he rates very highly as he shows the characteristics of a true Gryffindor. I love his development as the books/movies progressed.

It's been a while since I first read the books when I was 5. He's not my favorite character, but I like the character growth he goes through from the awkward boy who keeps losing his toad to the snake slayer and DA leader. I'll always love the scene where he stands up to Harry, Ron, and Hermione because at that point that kind of courage was unexpected from Neville.

Honestly? I love his journey and character development more than most other characters'. He truly has the heart of a lion! I don't have just one favourite characters, but he's definitely the top of the list.

I relate to him in so many ways - wanting to stand for what's right and trying to despite self-doubt. I always felt so proud of him!!!! And he was unintentionally hilarious, especially in the films. Matthew Lewis portrayed him so well.

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM IS MY FAVE HP CHARACTER, OKAY?

I simply cannot find the right words to explain how much I adore him. His character development over the course of the seven books was quite astonishing and motivational. I loved dearly to read how he went from a scared little boy to a strong, brave young man. I love that he pursued his passion for Herbology and chose to pass that passion/knowledge of the subject onto others.

He is a role model indeed

As a kid reading the books he was just a side character. But then as the other books came out I realized that this all could have been him. He was just the goofy kid who tried to stand up to his friends and would do anything for them. You got to see exactly how strong he is with his herbology knowledge and his strength in friendships.

Hes sweet and slightly underrated and that is whats so awesome about him.

I actually would like to reread the books focusing on different characters, Neville included, because he's one of the ones that the movies have fully influenced my opinion on him. In a good way though I think it helps that with the movies don't feel like our opinions of characters are filtered by Harry as they are in the books. I always got the vibe that Harry never really took Neville as seriously as what he deserved.

Some of my favourite moments in the series are actually Neville moments when I think about it, sort of like he snuck in there and won me over without my realising it. He's the kind of person who I would want as a friend.

Ok so, everyone hold on to your hats - because you may be shocked to learn Neville is my FAVORITE FICTIONAL CHARACTER OF ALL TIME.

I relate to him in so many ways. I've felt like an outcast most of my life, having hobbies that people might think are weird (like RPing *cough*) but he has also inspired me to be brave and stand up for what is right. To ignore what others say about you and just continue focusing on your passion - even if it's your family. His story is so heartbreaking too, you can't help but feel for him. I'll never forgive the movies for NOT putting in the scene with his parents in St. Mungos. Can you imagine how great Matt would have been in that scene? CAN YOU?

I first remember reading the fifth book and losing my MIND over the fact that HE could have been The Boy Who Lived. It would have changed so much, and it was really interesting to think about how his character could have been different should HE have switched places with Harry. Watching his transformation over the last few books, to the moment when he killed Nagini, made me feel like I was watching my best friend grow up. I was so proud of him the entire 7th book and honestly, I haven't found a fictional character that I've felt that way about since.

Not to mention Matthew Lewis did SUCH a good job. From the very first movie all the way to the last. He is definitely a big part of WHY I loved Neville so much and paid attention to him more in the books as they went on. I know realistically they couldn't put EVERY Neville scene in the movies but I have no doubt he would have killed it in every one.

Yes! Yes! And yes! His character is great and I feel like even if we weren't able to read a book from his POV that even reading from Ginny, luna, or Hermione it may change the outlook we get on his character. He's got so much heart! I absolutely love it. Hew my top three favourite characters for sure!

I think this is one of the stand out things about Neville to me, and why I like him as a character (though he's not my fave) - his growth and transformation from first year to seventh year is actually reflected in both the books and the movies. Others had their arcs tampered with (presumably, for cinematic effect), but Neville's felt reasonably paced, as did Matthew's characterisation of him. He just quietly develops as he finds who he is, and what he stands for, and really comes into his own.

In the earlier books/movies, I saw Neville as a clumsy and endearing boy. But when I read about the backstory of his parents, my opinion of him changed completely. As the story goes on, he really develops as a character and becomes a true Gryffindor. Also, I think he is underrated and that some people don't like him just because of the depiction of him in the first few books/movies.

Where do you start with Neville Longbottom?

He is honest and good and true. His character development is up there with my favourites, not just in the HP universe but in literature. I feel I underestimated him so much in the first few instalments and so to see how he became so strong was amazing. He was the greatest friend to the rest of the characters and really embodied Gryffindor in a way that went beyond a lot of the other members of the House.

And my heart broke when we found out about his family, and again when we met them in St. Mungo's. He really did his parents proud.

Yes okay, I think this is one of the reasons why I loved him so much throughout the series. For me personally, Neville was one of the most relatable characters. While I could see a little bit of myself in many of the characters of the series, I think Neville did it for me more than the others. And it's his imperfections / flaws, that really helped me gravitate towards him.

One of the common misconceptions that people outside of the fandom have of HP is with the house stereotypes, and I think that Neville was one of the initial characters that broke through those boxes to show us that Gryffindors, as seen with any house, come in all shapes and forms.

lol when I first read your post I wanted to underline some of the things you said and then I realized I'd be underlining your whole post.

a. rereading the books focusing on different characters is such a good idea????? like, how different would it be to pay attention to the specific niches or backgrounds, to try to see things from their perspectives, to understand their respective journey's throughout the novels. WOW. yes. i want to do this too.

b. I also felt like harry never took him seriously!!!! man. i'm upset. But also, it just makes me love Neville even more? For the fact that he was always underestimated, that we SEE how unsure he was of himself, and then to witness the growth it took for him to take the lead of the student rebels in Deathly Hallows. The kind of growth he had to do in terms of self confidence. THE GROWTH IS UNREAL.

c. oh wow. yes. favorite moments for me are also a lot of the little neville moments. again, maybe this is because I found him so relatable that the little moments he had felt very grounded and realistic and idk. but yes.

d. HE IS THE KIND OF PERSON TO WANT AS A FRIEND!!!! i feel like people would beat me up for saying this, but I'm not sure I'd want Harry or even Hermione as a friend tbh. But Neville. Neville is prime friend material. Now that you've said it, I think that's the best way to describe him tbh. Someone you'd want as a good friend.

His character development!!!!!!!!!! man, it really gets me going. I have nothing more to add to what you said, lawra. I just wanted to scream NEVILLE'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

I would really just be echoing a lot of what has been already said here, particularly by Lissy. I remember both on page and in theater that my first true jump out of my seat fist bump moment was Neville wielding the Sword of Gryffindor and in a way STILL acting like the Chosen One in that without his contributions and defeat of Nagini...Harry would NOT have succeeded in his horcrux mission nor in besting Voldemort.

This is also why I am SO SO SO frustrated that the new Fantastic Beast films are robbing this pure heroic moment of this underrated and overlooked (not taken seriously by his peers or professor or ANYONE really until these PIVOTAL moments) away from him in turning it into something so...tragic.

To be honest I didn't care for him at first but he really grew on me! He just irked me at first and I am not even sure why. By the end of the series he became one of my top five characters!

I'm with Tegz though, I would really like to read the books from another character's point of view!

I'll be honest with you, I wasn't a fan at first. I just never found a moment that really connected me to the character. I think I first connected to him when he approached Voldemort in that huge crowd of people. Nobody else bothered to do that! Then we agreed to get the snake and finally did, I was a true fan!

I love reading other opinions on characters. Gives me different views and You're all so cool. I love you like I love Neville. Das a lot, btw.

He is my Mum's favourite character and when I just asked her why, she said "he's the type of boy I want you to bring home, Shannon. He's nice and he got hot" .............. this woman is something else (and hi Mum if you still use your secret SS account to spy on me) (love u)

Yeeeeeeeeeesss. I think I understood him more when we found out about his parents. Like I liked him before that but something was missing and then it clicked and I wanted to snuggle his noggin and squish his cheeks for the rest of our days.

First point: you were reading the books at 5? LITTLE GRIFFIN SOUNDS SO CUTE.

I still cheer when he stands up to them. It's like my little routine.

I LOVE ME SOME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. Ugh, yes. And I love that we saw the character development so largely with him despite the books being from Harry's pov, y'know? Like there was a chance we wouldn't have seen it so much because Harry wasn't exactly very aware of others. (But that's a different discussion to have elsewhere for sure) BUT YES. I think that's a testament to how much he did grow. That it was recognised.

When I have time again.. I'm going to come bother you about this rereading focusing on different characters. I've tried it before but couldn't get into a swing with it.

But super yes about the movies influencing opinions because the Harry bias wasn't so evident. I think I'm the same tbh.

I was waiting for your Neville essay tbh. I love that you love him. And I love that you found someone in the series that you related to so well And that your love is still there. <3

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM FOR PRESIDENT

Definitely! I wonder what the view of Neville would have been from someone else...

I wanted to reiterate this in my thoughts because as I read this whole thread and all of the responses, this part stuck with me. He quietly developed himself over the years and it was such a... natural progression, y'know? Like it was slow growing and it made SENSE.

As the story goes on, he really develops as a character and becomes a true Gryffindor. Also, I think he is underrated and that some people don't like him just because of the depiction of him in the first few books/movies.
I think people also only think of the earlier books and movies when they think about him. Like.. they don't seem to consider the growth he had. Obviously everyone in this thread seems to have because we love him But that early introduction to him as the boy that loses his toad and forgets all the things... HE'S CHANGED. HE'S NOT A BABY ANYMORE.

Mungo's. He really did his parents proud.
and you make me proud everyday

ok ok ok I am sooooo with you on the character development love being across literature and not just the HP universe. I think it's rare to see 'side characters' (and I hate that term) get a character development that is so important.

;___________;

let's break all those glass ceilings of stereotypes yas yas yessss

I have had sO many arguments about how Neville's sorting and it's sO sad that people don't think he fits places and uGH

;_______; yes

I'm so upset by this.

I'm with Tegz though, I would really like to read the books from another character's point of view!
Maybe we could eventually have a reread focussed on a different character. Hmm.

Are there any reasons that you aren't a huge fan?

Not sure I'm doing this right but here we go!

I always liked Neville, especially when I found out that we are birthday twins!

I thought he was brave, friendly, and represented those of us who aren't always the hero of the main story, but are the hero of our own story. Neville had an important role to play and I liked how he popped up in smaller, but still important, moments (for example, with the gillyweed). And in the movies, it was pretty cool that he had sucha glow-up.
