I think James had a normal relationship with his parents, just like everyone else has. Not too close, but not too far either.
They were barely mentioned in the books, only when Sirius said they were kind people and let him live with them when he escaped the Blacks. We don't even know their name.
When James and Lily were killed () they weren't alive, so I assume they were killed, too, in the war. Maybe they were killed because of the hunt for the prophecy, who knows.

I think that James and his family had a close relationship. In the books when Harry went into the pensieve he explained James as someone who was well pampered and taken care of. I think that a very loving family that cared for him very much. He was very well taken care of after their death and that speaks about how much they loved him, I think.

Well, so far we know that James' parents had him late in life. So, the reason they weren't around when him and Lily were killed was because they had already died, of natural consequences, Jo confirmed. He was also well pampered as he was an only child.

So, I think James and his family were very close. He was a pampered only child, so that about sums it up. Also, what parents would allow their son's best friend to move in with them, if they weren't really close with their child and therefore, close with his friends? I mean, they must have been close with James to know that what kind of friends he had, or even Sirius' situation, to let him live with them. He was a Black, and that meant something.
