Well, I tend to think they met either on the train to Hogwarts or during the feast, and struck a friendship immediately. One of those 'instant chemistry' things that happen between friends 
There's also the possibility that they knew each other before Hogwarts, but taking into consideration the different directions their two families took as to blood purity and its importance, I prefer to stick to my first thought =) | |

I agree with my Clone. I think maybe they met at school or on the train to Hogwarts.
Or maybe Sirius had gotten into some trouble during school and pleaded with James to cover up for him or hide him, and maybe since then they had been friends. =D However they met I'm sure it was under interesting circumstances.  | |

Well, I go with my Part-Sirius Twinny Chrissy, up there. <3 I think they met on the train, and it was an instant, on-the-very-spot addiction friendship. It must have grown stronger once they got inside the castle and realized how much they both loved hexing people pranks. Gradually, they began to plan pranks together, back each other, and cover for each other. Then they ended up in detention. [Did I mention together? *cough-no-wonder-cough*] and realized how much they both loved paying teachers back. So, in more than just one way, the friendship stuck. Forever.

This is how I have always pictured Sirius and James getting together, either on the train or at the feast. I do believe that it was instant friendship because they are so close.
Plus with Sirius being a bit of a rebel and going against his family and their beliefs, he had to know who James was since the wizarding families all know each other. I believe that at the point he realized who James was, he got to know him out of spite of his parents and then it just turned into a great friendship because the two of them were a lot alike, charming, rebels and boys. | |

I know this sounds lame...but I think it was just one of those things where they were always meant to meet. No matter what came their way I think that it was just destiny for them to meet and become best friends.
I like to believe that the universe works like that, and that people are purposely put in your path. So if they wouldn't have met at school, I think they would have met later on in life. It was just meant to be.
And I just realized I posted something similar to this in my last post. Lmao! But I elaborated a little more? O_o
