Obviously because he has Slytherin's blood and the other qualities that Slytherin house ask for Tom Riddle matches greatly such as ambition voldemorts power and search for immortality, will do anything to achieve their ends think about the horcruxes splitting your soul is a giant of a task and killing hundres who get in his way of course so.... Snape was in Slytherin house aswell and he's half blood and thus his anger at the loss of his order of merlin. If there were only pure bloods in Slytherin there would be about 20 kids because of how many pure blood families are left and considering that one of the pure blood families has all its members in Gryffindor (weasleys) there are few other pure bloods. Also if they only let pure bloods into slytherin the Sorting hat wouldnt have contemplated letting Harry in to Slytherin. | |

Sirys whole family were in SLyth but his characteristics made him different enough to be in GrYffindor...

But you guys are also forgetting that the Sorting Hat's really not the one who decides where you go in Hogwarts, it's really you that decide where you belong. Remember how Harry was put into Gryffindor when he could've done equally well in Slytherin?? He brought this up with Dumbledore and Dumbledore told him that it's really his choice. Harry never knew that he was Godric Gryffindor's heir... Whatever he was, at that moment, he was determined to not be sorted into the Slytherin house.
Tom Riddle on the other hand knows that he is a loner, he knows how his character is and after seeing it for himself, I'm pretty sure that he doesn't want to be in the other three houses. Simply put, he knows that Slytherin is the right house for him. So in the back of his mind, although not saying a word about unlike her, he had Slytherin on his mind as his future house. ummmm, I think because he was talented but had dark mind. if you remember about Harry, the hat asked her:
do you like to go to Slytherin? Slytherin is better for you , we can expect great thinks from you and if you be in slytherin you can be great."
but Harry said: " no, Slytherin no, Gryffindor!
and after that Hat discovered that harry is a great boy, clean , talented and sent him to Gryffindor.
Dark +talented= Slytherin Clean+talented=Gryffindor

well it was never said that slytherian only takes pure bloods because look aT Snape he was a half blood too. And like Dumbledoore said it is our choices. and it was a plus that Voldemort was a decendent of slytherin

I don't remember reading anywhere in the book that Slytherin takes purebloods only - It took Snape too. As Dumbledore told Harry at the end of Chamber of Secrets - "It is not our abilities, Harry, what makes us what we are...It is our choices." So basically you choose your house yourself. It doesn't matter what runs in your blood. Take Sirius for instance - A Gryffindor amidst a chain of not-so-good Slytherins. Get my point? Your house basically reflects how you would like to use your abilities and skills in furture. 
Coming to Voldemort he couldn't have been in any other house at all. Gryffindor takes only those of daring - And Voldemort isn't brave. He fears fire and light, remember? And Gryffindors are really brave. He didn't have the loyalty and justice that marks a person a Hufflepuff. He certainly had the wits for Ravenclaw, oh yes, but I guess his Slytherin qualities were so greater that he just had to end up there.
First off Tom was Slytherin's Heir. So that made it certain that he had to be a Slytherin. But even if he hadn't been the heir he'd still be a Slytherin. That's because he's really cunning, very determined, extremely power hungry, cruel and – in short – evil. He would himself have wanted to be in Slytherin and also all of hsi qualities are that of a Slytherin. As we come to know in Half-Blood Prince, he's been that way since he was a child - A true Slytherin even in his childhood. Period.

your heritage is not necessarily a gage of which house you are put in.. Slytherin doesnt only take purebloods, there arent enough left.
besides, Snape was in Slytherin and we all know now that he was a Half-Blood (those who havent read HBP should be ashamed of themselves).
and i think a more appropriate topic here would be: is Harry Godric Gryffindor's heir?
