I'm pretty sure the Potter's were quite a well known, respectable pureblood family, so they would have accumulated the money over the generations!

The Potters are purebloods, so I think they were rich like most of the pureblood families, though they weren't snobs who joined Voldemort. The Potters are a Griffindor family

The books only suggest that Harry had enough money for support his schooling and young adult life. Although he was quite comfortable in his school life I doubt he had enough to sustain him forever... when you think about it, there was really a whole lot that he had to pay for. I think because in comparison to the Weasley's he had so much that everyone exaggerates what he actually had.

And from The Leaky Cauldron website in 2007 (two thirds of the way down the page) Quote:

JKR: To take Remus first, Remus was unemployable. Poor Lupin, prior to Dumbledore taking him in, lead a really impoverished life because no one wanted to employ a werewolf. The other three were full-time members of the Order of the Phoenix. If you remember when Lily, James and co. were at school, the first war was raging. It never reached the heights that the second war reached, because the Ministry was never infiltrated to that extend but it was a very bad time, the same disappearances, the same deaths. So that's what they did, they left school. James has gold, enough to support Sirius and Lily. So I suppose they lived off a private income. But they were full-time fighters, that's what they did, until Lily fell pregnant with Harry. So then they went into hiding.

It's too obvious. I mean the darkest wizard in history has put your family at the top of hit list, soo what do you do. Take out the biggest life insurance policy possible! If they did it through a muggle insurance company that was unaware of Voldemort Harry would be rolling in gold with their deaths. They just wanted to make sure he would be able to take of himself.
Or they had a lot of valuable assets and had invested wisely. To tell the truth I am no expert on the wizarding market, but after Harry defeated Voldemort when he was a baby, stocks must have sky rocketed.

I think James' parents were rich, therefore he was a trust-fund baby. Because, Lily and James premature death, all of James' wealth went to Harry. Also, maybe the bank had some type of system where the money would collect interest. After all, the money was sitting in the vault for ten years untouched.

I don't think they where only 21. Because 10 years after they died and Harry saw them in the mirror of erised, they both looked as if they where in their mid-fourties. They must have been about 30 when they had Harry.
