Default Sectumsempra!

"'SECTUMSEMPRA!' bellowed Harry from the floor, waving his wand wildly. Blood spurted from Malfoy's face and chest as though he had been slashed with an invisible sword. He staggered backward and collapsed onto the waterlogged floor with a great splash, his wand falling from his limp right hand." (The Half-Blood Prince, p. 522.)

What an amazing hex Sectumsempra is! It is as if it makes one's wand a very long, weightless, invisible, incredibly sharp sword. The effect this would have on an enemy is stunning, not only because of the damage it inflicts but because the hex is so little-known. Kudos to Snape for figuring this one out indeed! Such a ruthless hex!

Do you think we will see it again in book seven? Wouldn't mind seeing it used on LV after the horcruxes are destroyed, especially if Harry is to avoid using the unforgivable curses and still kill LV. And I wouldn't be surprised seeing as how JKR had Harry use a sword already to kill the Basilisk summoned by LV. It would fit. Comments?

I HOPE Harry uses it against the Death Eaters. As far as it appears, there is no counter-curse, similiar to The Killing Curse.

Woo.. that kinda scared me when Harry used it on Draco the first time. lol.
It definitely would be a great hex to use against Voldemort and the death eaters.

Sectumpsempra can come in handy. However, you are all forgetting that Snape, a Death Eater, is the one to have come up with the curse originally. He also knows Harry knows about it. Therefore, the Death Eaters can be forewarned of the hex's existence. Also, it seems that Snape is quite good at healing the victim, as we saw when he helped Draco. That would reduce the effectiveness of Sectumsempra drastically.

Snape knew how to heal it because HE created it. That does not mean that others would. Further, it remains to be seen if Snape is really a true Death Eater. Book six suggests that he is, but that argument is far from over... and for a different thread. Sectumsempra could and should be used by Harry to eliminate LV; thus, allowing Harry to kill LV without using an "unforgivable" curse.

She may have done back-up recovery, but recall that the wounds were so severe that BUT FOR Snape's "sewing" them up, Draco would have died.

Thumbs up

I think we could see Sectumsempra return in book 7!

Sectumsempra has been around for a while. Snape created it & used against James in OoTP! Chapter 28, Snape's Worst Memory.

"Snape had directed his wand straight at James; there was a flash of light and a gash appeared on the side of James's face, spattering his robes with blood."

Snape had much better control over the spell and only mildly injured James. Harry almost killed Draco. Either Snape used it better because he has practiced it or he didn't want to really hurt James badly. When Harry used it he had no idea what the spell did.

I also think it is important that we also learn that James already knew another spell created by Snape - Levicorpus - and James used it on Snape!

"James whirled about, a second flash later, Snape was hanging upside down in the air, his robes falling over his head to reveal skinny, pallied legs and a pair of graying underpants"

In HBP (Chapter 16 - A Very Frost Christmas) Harry asks Lupin about Levicorpus. Lupin responds:

"Oh, that one had a great vouge during my time at Hogwarts" said Lupin reminiscently. "There were a few months in my 5th year when you couldn't move for being hoisted into the air by your ankle."

"Jinxes go in and out of fashion like anything else."

I don't think many knew Snape was the Half Blooded Prince and that he created these spells! But his spells were out there & being used often.

So there could be others (both on the good & bad side) that are aware of the two spells because they were at Hogwarts then or because the had the used potions book that was still around like Harry did. Like Lupin said jinxes go in and out of fashion so the could have been forgotten about.

I think Harry should remember both Sectumsempra & Levicorpus because either could come in handy when fighting Voldemort or the Death Eaters. Maybe Snape was the best teacher Harry had after-all!

We could see that curse return and man it is hot! That is probably one of the best curse next to the one LV used to killed Harry's parents. It would be great for Harry to injure LV then finish him off.

Agreed!

I definitely think that seeing this spell again is a possibly. It had a huge place in HBP, no doubt, but I had a feeling all along that JKR was setting us up for Book 7 with almost everything she taught in Book 6. For that matter, I don't think there were many wasted pages in the series at all: most of what we have read was a basis, was necessary rudimentary information, for what was to come. Dumbledore's words of wisdom and everything Harry learned from the "Half-Blood Prince" will absolutely come back later. As for this particular spell ... it's harsh, and it's pretty violent. If Harry is going to continue battling on to rid the world of Voldemort, he'd better learn some more spells like it. I think the only way he's going to avoid the Unforgivable Curses is to find spells and jinxes that are almost parallel in severity, but leave less permanent results.

Sectumsempra could be used as a close-in patronum against creatures as well. I wonder what other goodies are in that book?

I'm sure that they can use it in the films in a tactful manner. Especially since the curse is used by Harry three times in HBP.

Oh well, i don't think Harry would use the curse unless it was absolutely necessary, simply because it's not like Harry to kill or injure pointlessly.

Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!

I agree with Imi. Now that he knows what it will do, I really don't expect to see Harry use that hex ever again. It was brutal and horrific. It's a death eater's spell if anything, and you won't likely see any of the good guys using anything like it, in my opinion.

Yes, it's impressive, but I don't think it's impressive in a good way if you get me.

i agree hun. yes it is an impressive spell but it was created soley to cause pain and suffering. harry and his fellows would not use such a spell lightly. although i can't deny that voldie is the one person whom would deserve to be on the recieving end of such a spell, i don't think harry has it in him to perform it.

Reached and Spanked 1000! The Snitch

I hope that we don't see it again!

When Harry uses curses against death eaters, he tends keep to ones that hinder and tries the more dangerous ones til he feels pure anger boil in him.

I think a spell like that isn't used to kill people but to enjoy causing pain, which is something that Harry isn't into. If he going to use any dangerous curses, he'll stick to the unforgivable ones and only whenhis life is in danger.
