maybe it was an item that the ministry had a tracking spell on and if james had worn it. voldemort would be the one to find it if he was taking over the ministry. So maybe dunmbledore took it off ames to protect him. :s idk

LOL why are people still trying to debate this? Read The Deathly Hallows for answers, and realize that the older posts were written before the book's release.
