Who is Cale Newell? - Sa13+

Hello! I'm Lissy, and I was recently inspired by the number of RP Charrie Fics on this site and I decided to make my own ^_^ The story will center around Cale Newell, who is my new RP charrie as of next term and the cousin of my current charrie Emma :D But I'm so excited to play him that I didn't want to wait till term, so this fic will start off as a glimpse at his home life, and then will move into Cale's life at school

So, without further ado, let's jump right into the story, shall we? :woot:

He couldn’t remember much about it, which was strange. Usually, when you are 11 years old, you remember the more significant events in your life. He was pretty sure that losing a parent fell under that category.

Maybe it was the fact that his dad was hardly ever around. He wasn’t sure what he had done for a living, and he was pretty sure his mom didn’t know exactly what it was either, but he had been in foreign relations, and therefore hardly ever home. He definitely did remember the crying--there was a lot of crying on his mum's part. He understood what was going on--his dad had gotten sick, and there wasn't anything he could do about it. He remembered crying himself, locked upstairs in his room. Neither of his sisters remembered how dreary and depressing the air felt in the Newell house for that month in August.

And then, suddenly, everything became a blur. The only thing he could remember next was being told by his mother that he was not going to Hogwarts.

Now, every kid dreams of going to Hogwarts. The huge castle walls, the House cup, Quidditch matches, classes...all the stories he had been hearing while growing up were now just that--stories. He would never get to experience the thrill of sitting in his first Transfiguration class. He would never be able to visit Hogsmeade with the rest of his class. Instead, he was sentenced to spending his teenage years in his house, being taught mediocre spells and charms by his mother.

He knew why she was doing it. She was scared she would lose him too...an irrational, yet somewhat understandable fear. He'd feel really guilty if he left her and went and did something stupid and ended up losing a leg or something. Something like that would almost inevitably happen, since he could barely get dressed without tripping over his feet and falling into something. So, he kept his mouth shut and just dealt with it for four years. That was when he decided he couldn't take it anymore.

Cale Newell loved his mom, and his sisters...he really did. But, truth be told, she had been a stay at home mom while her husband was still alive for a reason. She had a desk job at St. Mungos now, but if she had a job that had anything to do with spellwork, Cale would be worried for her. He could tell, even without being in a classroom full of 30 other students, that her spells were not very good, probably only A standard at best. If he was going to make it someday in the Ministry, he would need to be able to perform higher level jinxes and charms. When he told this to his mother, she was quite worried at first, but after a long period of persuading, he convinced her.

Cale Newell was coming to Hogwarts.

The Cousin

"Ok, here's the letters...You got them all?"

Emma Cobblesten, Cale's little cousin, was perched on the end of his bed, handing him a number of large scrolls, which were letters she had written for her friends. Poor Emma, he thought to himself. The strange animals-turning-into-students disaster last year had caused her parents to become paranoid that their youngest daughter was not safe at Hogwarts, and they were sending her to America to live with her older sister Penny and attend wizarding school there. Cale had been rather disappointed; she was his favorite cousin, despite the 4 year age difference and the fact that she was a little girl obsessed with make-up. He had been looking forward to knowing at least ONE person at Hogwarts.

Although, according to Emma, all the people she knew were really friendly and would be nice to him, especially when he told them he was related to her. But he still didn't like the fact that she was using him as an owl to deliver messages to all her friends.

"Yes, I have them right here," he patted the side of his pocket to show her that he had them in a safe, yet accessible place. "And all of your friends pictures...except the one of Bella. I don't think you ever gave me one of her."

"Oh, I don't remember ever having one..." Emma replied, tapping her finger on her chin. "Oh, well, you can ask Jack or someone else to see her."

"Who's Jack?"

"The Quidditch captain! Can you at least try to keep up?" Emma snapped. "Ok, all you need to remember is that Anna is the one with curly hair, and she's really smart and kind of bossy. But that's just natural for her; I think it runs in her family. Jason plays Quidditch and has a lot of Gryffindor pride, and...well, we'll just go over the rest later, ok?"

Cale was hardly listening at that point. "Can you toss me my dragonhide gloves?" he asked, turning back to the large trunk that was sitting in front of his bed.

Emma grabbed them off the nightstand and attempted to toss them to Cale, but missed and nearly broke the small replica of the Holyhead Harpies stadium Cale had sitting on his desk. He rolled his eyes and snatched the gloves from the tiny little figurine. One of the goal posts had broken.

"Sorry," Emma muttered as she blushed. Clumsiness really did run in the family, it seemed.

"It's okay," he sighed in reply. He dropped the gloves in his trunk and stood back to admire his packing handiwork.

"So, are you nervous about the sorting?" she asked, bouncing off his bed and examining the damage she had done to his replica.

"No," he answered. He said it just a little too quickly, and a little too loudly.

"Don't worry about it...you're lucky," Emma said, helping him to close to top of his trunk over his belongings. "Most students have to actually sit in front of the whole school and get sorted...you just get to go to the Headmistress and get sorted privately in her office. I heard that's what they do when any student makes the transition from homeschooling to Hogwarts."

Cale sighed as they finally snapped his trunk shut. He sat down on top of it, staring at his hands. "Ok, truth be told...I am a little nervous. What if I get in Slytherin?"

"So? That's not a bad thing," Emma assured him, sitting next to him on top of the trunk, "I had lots of friends in Slytherin. Plus, your dad was a Slytherin, and he was really nice. Or you might get your mum's house."

"Hufflepuff?" Cale asked in horror. "That might be worse."

"Hey, I know lots of cool people in Hufflepuff too! Once you get there, you'll find out that all those sterotypes aren't true. There are some exceptions, of course, but most of the prejudice between the houses is long gone." she explained. "Or, you could be in a house totally unlike the one your parents were in. Like Jacob. Neither of our parents where in Hufflepuff and he ended up there, while me and Jackie went to Gryffindor and Penny was in Ravenclaw."

Cale didn't say anything...he just continued to stare at his hands. The little girl looked at him, and after knowing him her whole life, she was certain something was wrong. Cale was not one who was usually at a loss for words.

"Cale?" Emma asked, "You look like something else is bothering you."

He sighed and leaned back against the wall his trunk was propped against. It was strange that he, a 16 year old male, always felt like opening up to his little cousin, a 12 year old little girl. She was the only person that he didn't have to act all cool and macho around. He wasn't exactly sure why that was, but it was nice to talk to someone about his secrets every once in a while.

"What if people don't like me?" he asked. "What if people think I'm the freaky new kid?" He never had been good with people judging him.

"You must have a very demented sense of reality," she replied, rolling her eyes. "People don't think like that. All you have to do is be nice to people and be yourself. Who cares if they think you're a freak? You really need to stop worrying about what people think of you, Cale. And when I say be yourself, I mean be yourself, not that egotistical jerk you turn into sometimes."

Cale rolled his eyes right back at her. The thing you need to understand about Cale is, he is a real guy guy. When meeting new people (especially if the people include a couple of attractive females) he can get a bit of a big head. He tends to be a bit of a show off, and says some things he probably shouldn't say. He likes being the center of attention. And even though he knows people don't like jerky guys like that, he still does it. It's kind of hard to explain why...that's just the complicated way that boys act.

"I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about," his cousin said again. "If it makes you feel any better, I can come with you and your mum to your sorting. So you have extra support."

He shook his head, "No, that's ok. You're probably right. School can't be that difficult can it?"

"Nope, it's not. You'll like Hogwarts," Emma added. A noticeable gloom settled over her face, and Cale remembered why; she wasn't going there with him next year. "There's lots of drama, so you'll have tons of fun."

He wrinkled his eyebrows. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Emma sighed. "No offense Cale, but you're kind of a drama queen."

Colley 04-26-2008 12:14 AM

The Sorting

The castle was huge. And frightening.

It was probably because the castle was so empty. He knew it would be full of life in about, two weeks, but right now...it was eerie.

It didn't help matters when, on the way to the Headmistress' office, he walked through a ghost.

A real freakin ghost. After that, he was seriously thinking about turning around and walking right back into the office they had just come from, and Flooing right back home.

He didn't know why they couldn't just Floo into the Head's office...apparently there were spells on the fireplace over the summer holidays that prevented them from getting in that particular office. Either way, one of the professors...he wasn't sure who, she had introduced herself but he had already forgotten her name and the subject she taught...was leading his mum and himself to her office.

When they got there, the Head wasn't even in her office. She probably had better things to do than sort a new transfer student.

The professor who led them there got a hat down from the display case. It must have been the legendary Sorting Hat. Cale's hands were shaking now--he had promised himself that he wouldn't freak out, but it wasn't working. He felt like that stupid, ratty old hat was going to determine his whole future.

In a way, it really was.

He sat down on a stool, sheepishly smiled at his mother, and suddenly everything was dark.

Well, hello there.

He jumped about a mile in the air. Was this place trying to scare the living daylights out of him? What the heck was that? He whipped his head around for a few seconds before he realized the hat was talking to him.

Starting a little late, aren't we? Oh well, let's just get this over with, I was napping before I got woken up for this, you know. Hmm...quite the risk taker we have here...rather mischievous too.

Cale was a bit resented at that last statement, but he didn't have much time to think about it. He held his breath, waiting for the decision that would be a huge factor in determining just how smoothly these next two years went by for him. His knuckles were turning white as he gripped the stool tighter with each passing second. What was taking it so long?

A bit clumsy, as well, but I remember your mother, I think she was like that too...hmmm, let's see, intelligent and very resourceful, loyal...I guess we're just going to have to put you in

GRYFFINDOR!

He heard the hat scream that last part to small room. His mother let out a joyful little squeak that was mixed with a sob. The professor took the hat off his head and congratulated him, but he couldn't remember responding her.

He wasn’t sure exactly how they got back to the fireplace they had come from—he honestly couldn’t remember walking through the corridors. But once they got home, and the nausea that usually accompanied Floo Power had died away, he realized that his legs felt like jelly, he still wasn’t breathing normally, and he was sweating a great deal.

It wasn’t until he got into bed that night when it finally hit him:

He had been sorted into Gryffindor.

That night, Cale fell asleep with a smile on his face.

The Sunrise

He hadn't thought about her in months. It was weird how easily he had just forgotten about Faye Simeon. But, for some reason, when he woke up in the morning, it suddenly dawned on him:

Faye Simeon, his ex-girlfriend, went to Hogwarts too.

He wasn't sure why he hadn't thought about that. He always knew that every witch and wizard in the United Kingdom went to Hogwarts to get their training, but he had never given thought to the fact that she was there. It was weird, seeing as how Hogwarts was the thing that had made him realize his feelings for her in the first place.

Faye and Cale had met when they were very little, when he had still been planning on going to Hogwarts. They had had the whole thing planned out; they would both be in the same house, play Quidditch together and be the best pair of Beaters that the school had seen since the legendary Fred and George Weasley, and then both of them would go on to work at the Ministry together.

Once Cale started getting home schooled, things began to change a little.

First of all, the time that he got to see Faye was very limited, since she, the lucky one, actually got to go to Hogwarts while he was stuck at home. Secondly, she was starting to get new friends at school, friends that she preferred over him. And he was not going to stand for that.

That was when he realized that maybe, just maybe, he liked her as more than a friend.

At first he tried to convince himself that it wasn't true...No, you're just jealous, he thought. You just like her as a friend! You're jealous that she has other friends now that she likes hanging out with too, and they get to see her everyday.

Of course, his brain argued back, Yeah, but how many times have you wanted to kiss one of your friends the way you want to kiss Faye?

Shut up, brain!

After a long period of thinking things through--with a considerable amount of headaches--Cale asked Faye to be his girlfriend.

They began dating during the summer after Faye's third year at Hogwarts and had dated all the way up into the middle of her fifth year. That was when, during the Christmas holidays, she told him that she didn't want to be his girlfriend anymore because she had found someone else.

Now, he wouldn't call what they had love exactly, but to him, it did feel like something special. She had no idea how hard it was for him to say goodbye to her at the beginning of each term, or how difficult it was to be stuck in his house all the time. Instead, she got to go have fun with her friends at jolly old Hogwarts, where she was meeting new guys behind his back and doing lord knows what with them. He had never doubted her for a second, but after they broke up he wondered for a while just how long she had been sneaking around like that.

Not that he would ever admit those feelings to anyone. He didn't want people thinking he was a wimp.

After a month or so, he finally got over her, seeing as how he had no choice. He honestly hadn't thought about her until that morning, when he had woken up after a slightly horrifying nightmare. We're not going to go into details here, but let's just say that the nightmare involved a lot of people laughing at him about the very small amount of clothes that he was wearing in class.

The sun was just rising right outside his window as he woke up. After a few minutes of hiding under the covers, trying to hide from sunlight so he could go back to sleep, he decided that he wasn't going to fall asleep anytime soon and abandoned his bed in favor of his armchair right by the window.

When he was looking outside at his yard, as the sunlight began to engulf his mother's flower arrangements, he tried to remember the last time he had seen a sunrise. Finally, after a considerable amount of thinking, he remembered that the last time he had seen a sunrise was the night that he and Faye had stayed up all night talking, and in the morning, right before she left, they had had their first kiss.

He could even see the spot where it happened, right under the tree near his window.

And that was what got him remembering her again.

Oh, and let's not forget the little detail that she is in Gryffindor, too.

Maybe Hogwarts was going to be filled with a bit of drama after all.

The Broomstick

Cale was used to being the big brother.

He was the oldest in his family and the only boy as well. His younger sister Theresa was only 9 years old, and then his littlest sister Ellie was 7. As the older brother, it was his job to protect them from things like...boyfriends, for example. It was their job to be sweet and caring 90% of the time, and annoying and backstabbing the other 10% of the time.

Naturally, he also played big brother to his cousin Emma, whose own older brother Jacob was honestly a bit of a wimp.

And, of course, since he played big brother to Emma, she also played little sister to him many times.

Only, since she was older than 9 years old, she was slightly more annoying than his actual sisters.

The thing that was particularly annoying about her this morning was that she had accidentally let it slip that Cale had ordered a broomstick. Behind his mother's back.

Naturally, being the paranoid woman that Beth Newell was, there was no way she was going to let her only son near a broomstick-especially with all his coordination problems. If she thought he was in danger at Hogwarts, on the ground, she obviously thought that he would certainly fall to his death from 100 feet in the air. However, that didn't stop him from playing Beater for Jackie, Jacob, and Emma when he went over to visit his cousins, and he had done a pretty good job of keeping it hidden from her.

Leave it to Emma to ruin something like that for him.

"CALE MARKUS NEWELL! YOU GET DOWN HERE THIS INSTANT!"

Cale, who had been sitting at his desk, absentmindedly doodling on a random piece of parchment due to sheer boredom, visibly winced. When his mother used his atrocious middle name, Markus, that always meant that something was wrong. As he went down the stairs, he was wondering what he had done when he turned the corner and saw his mother standing at the threshold, holding the packaged Nimbus 2001 he had sent away for two months ago.

Uh oh.

"Cale, explain yourself right now!" she yelled, waving the broom so close to his face he was afraid she would hit him with it.

At first he was too shocked to respond. He didn't know how she had found that broom...he could have sworn he was the only one who actually used the shed out back. And even if someone did go in there, he was certain that he had hidden it well enough under all the other junk that was in there that no one would find it.

No one except Emma, of course. As his mother went on and on about responsibility, safety, and the growing number of deaths due to broomstick accidents, Emma tried explaining to him in the background about how she had found it when she was looking for the rake to help his mother with the gardening. "You always played for us when you came to visit, and it never occurred to me that you weren't allowed!"

That did not help the situation at all. Cale's mother completely flipped.

"YOU'VE BEEN PLAYING QUIDDITCH AT THEIR HOUSE?"

After a few more minutes of yelling, a bit of cursing on his mum's part, and some more yelling, Cale was sent to his room for the first time in seven years.

*****

Three hours later, Cale had fallen asleep on top of his bed, snoring rather loudly when his mother came into his room. He had been isolated in his room for the past four hours, doing nothing except doodling on his paper again and talking to Emma. The poor girl had run up to his room moments after he slammed the door and burst in without invitation. She had been on the verge of tears. She had quickly explained that she was looking for the rake and found the broom, when his mum came outside to see if she had gotten the rake and found her holding the broom instead. Cale couldn't blame Emma for his problem; he was the one who had secretly spent half his life savings on a broom that he wasn't allowed to have.

After they made up and chatting for a few more minutes, his mum came back up and forced Emma to go downstairs. Cale responded by telling her that he was fifteen years old, and that she was being completely ridiculous by locking him up in his room like some toddler who had just had a temper tantrum.

All that did was make her even angrier as she slammed the door shut with even more force than he had used.

So, he fell asleep on top of the covers, simply because he had nothing else to do. When his mother shook him awake, the sky had turned dark outside his window and the moon was shining right over his head.

"Cale?"

No. He was still mad at her. He was going to refuse to talk to her, he concluded. Instead, he buried his head in his pillow.

"Do you want to talk about today?"

"No," he mumbled. His voice was all muffled due to the fact that he was addressing his pillowcase.

"Listen, Cale, you know what you did was wrong. If I tell you I don't want you doing something, I expect you to listen to me. I don't care how old you are, or how smart you think you are, you are still my son and I still have some control over you."

Cale was about to fall asleep. How boring and generic, he thought to himself. Was this the line that all parents used to guilt trap their kids into admitting they were wrong?

"But...I was thinking about it, and even though you shouldn't have ordered a broom behind my back...I'm going to let you keep it."

"What?"

He sat up so quickly that he made himself a little dizzy. As he held his head in his hands, he looked at his mum, who was holding his broomstick out towards him.

"You can have it, on one condition: You are not to ride it until you get to Hogwarts, and maybe get a lesson or something from a more experienced student. I still think those are dangerous...if I find you riding it before you start school, I swear I will have it sent straight back to the store."

"Yeah, yeah, no problem," Cale said, taking his broom from her with a smile. "Thanks Mum. What made you change your mind?"

"Well, Emma explained to me how Jackie and Jacob taught you well when they were at your house, and there was always someone supervising. Now, I'm going to have a talk with my brother and ask him exactly what he was thinking letting you fly at his house, but Emma assured me that you knew what you were doing and there was no reason to worry."

As she got up and left the room to go write a letter to Emma's father, Cale made a mental note to give Emma a great big hug the next time he saw her.

The way Cale's mom reacted, is probably the same way that Willow's dad would react if he finds out that Willow plays Quidditch at school:lol:

I love it, naturally^_^
