Default When My Dream Became Reality - Sa16+

Hey guys here's my first attempt at a story. I actually wrote it back in 2002, but I didn't have the courage to post it until now. If I get positive responses back it won't take me long to post since it is finished...well unless I decide to change the ending a little bit.
Here's the first chapter, let me know what you think please. Even if you don't want to comment on the story, please let me know that you're reading this. As soon as someone posts saying anything I'll post a new chapter.

Chapter 1: The Best Woman for the Job

The Gryffindor colors decorated the Great Hall. Their House had – yet again – won the house cup this year. Amidst the festivities of another year ending, Tori Bloom sat rather quietly at the end of the table. Next to her, Hermione, Ron and Harry were making the most of their last meal at Hogwarts, as their seven years of education had finally come to an end. She envied her classmates. They all knew precisely what they were going to do after today: Hermione would go on to study at the University, Ron would go work with his father at the Ministry and Harry would go straight to Alastor Moody to begin his Auror training. Even Neville had found a way to make use of his talent: he was to become a healer. Only the brightest student in decades did not know what tomorrow would bring. She didn’t even know what she would like to do with her life. The only thing she could come up with was that she wanted to remain studying for the rest of her life.

Just the thought of having to leave Hogwarts! It had been a safe haven for years, especially now, when it was very likely the final battle with Voldemort would only be a heartbeat away. His power had continuously increased over the last years he had begun to ‘free the wizarding world from the tainted muggle blood’. As a result, the entire Creevey family had been wiped out in a Death Eater raid on their house during the Christmas break, as to make sure that the children were there as well. The left open spaces at the Gryffindor table were an all too sad reminder of their absence. But it wasn’t just Gryffindor that had suffered. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw had dealt with their own losses and even…

Her gaze went to the Slytherin table. Only half of the students that had begun their school year in September were sitting at their House table. She shivered when she thought of the events leading up to the exit of so many students. During this last school year, Voldemort had finally found a way to get to Harry. Or at least, that’s what he had thought. The Dark Lord had lured Harry to his lair, pretending he had revived Lily Potter to become his bride and mother to his heir. Before anyone could point out to Harry that this would be very unlikely, he had enraged in an outburst to go rescuing his mother. Poor Harry! Still, so much longing for his family, that only the tiniest bit of hope would blind him of the obvious. He had almost paid with his sanity to learn that some things just weren’t meant to be.

Fortunately, their much-despised Potion Master had been present at the time. Before Voldemort could make Harry undergo a Dementor’s Kiss, Professor Snape had jumped on top of Harry and apparated with him to Hogsmeade. By doing so, he had completely blown his cover of being a spy for Dumbledore, after finally regaining Voldemort’s trust last summer. As a result, the other Death Eaters found it no longer useful to hide and the Head of Slytherin became their enemy number 2 (after Harry that was). By revealing their true colors, sides were taken once and for all, and the children of the Death Eater-families had left Hogwarts. They hadn’t seen Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle, Parkinson and other Slytherin scum since.

Although it was a relief to have everything out in the open, it was all too clear that it had affected Dumbledore in a severe way. He had always hoped that he could rescue the children of the Death Eaters from their parents’ ways, but it seemed like all efforts had been in vain. Dumbledore had addressed the other Houses on the situation and asked them not to take things out on the Slytherins that remained. Apparently not all of them were as bad as the likes of Malfoy. After all, even a few Ravenclaws left to join their family at Voldemort’s side and thinking about Peter Pettigrew…he had been Gryffindor!

She suddenly realized she had wandered off and was about to lose herself in a very un-festive melancholy contemplation. Just then, Harry stood up and went to the head table. He started a conversation with Professor Snape and it looked like they were shooting glances at her while doing so. What on earth could they be talking about? After all, although Snape had rescued Harry from a fate worse than death, he would always be their least favorite teacher.

Oh well, deciding that she would at least have some pleasant memories of her last night at Hogwarts, she took another piece of chocolate cake and turned to Ron.

“So, are you planning on a holiday or will you start immediately at the Ministry?” she asked him.

“Well, given the situation with Voldemort, I don’t think it would be proper to go off on a holiday, do you?”

“Right, of course, how could I be so insensitive? No one will probably take a holiday for ages I guess.”

“Yeah…Tori, what’s the matter? You look like you’re about to burst into tears? How is that possible with exam results like yours?” Ron rolled his eyes.

She finally managed a little smile.

“OK. No matter how terrible things will get, we will always have our school results to hang onto” she chuckled.

“Right on!” Ron winked. He knew Tori was preoccupied with her future. Well, everyone was these days, especially since it wasn’t sure that they would HAVE a future.

Now! That really was some gloomy thinking. He saw Harry returning from the head table, with Dumbledore by his side. They were heading for Tori. Ron sort of knew what was going on and he smiled, knowing that his friend’s most pressing troubles would soon be over with.

“Miss Bloom, could you follow me to my office for a moment, please?” Dumbledore smiled gently.

“Oh, sure Professor.” Puzzled, she followed the older wizard to his study and found herself alone with him. She was unsure of what was going to come. Surely she wouldn’t be in any trouble? Not on her last day!

“Child, I do think I know just about everything concerning the future careers of my graduates. Except…” a little pause and a slight twinkle in his eye, “except for your plans, of course.”

It had sounded like a question and Tori did not know the answer to this one. Finally caught!

“Well…em…sir, I …em…well I don’t quite know what I want to do.” There was some despair in her voice.

“Now, now, no need to panic just yet, Miss Bloom! After all, your options are so numerous, it’s most understanding you have some difficulties in reaching a decision.”

She gave him a pensive look. Just what was going on in the Headmaster’s head? As if anyone would ever know that one!

“I won’t tease you much longer, my child. I have a proposition for you. Please hear me out until I have explained everything.”

She nodded, getting curious to hear what he had to say.

“You know of course that Professor Snape had succeeded in infiltrating the close circle around Voldemort. Regaining his trust made it possible for him to observe him closely. He found out something rather peculiar. No, Miss Bloom, what I am about to tell you, is only known to myself, Professor Snape, Alastor Moody and Harry, so I trust you will keep this a secret.”

After waiting for her to nod, he continued:

“It seems our Dark Lord has a little problem in maintaining his magical powers. Professor Snape has remarked that whenever Voldemort used his power, he drank a potion afterwards, as to replenish it. Unfortunately, he was not trusted enough to brew this potion. But, luckily for us, he has succeeded in capturing a sample of it. Besides his teaching and his work for the Ministry, Professor Snape will devote his time on finding out what the ingredients of this potion are and will attempt to brew an antidote so that Voldemort can be weakened. It is then up to our Aurors to defeat him. As this is a very complex task – we are not dealing with a simple headache potion – he will need some assistance. We had been thinking of you.”

Tori swallowed. This was pretty amazing. A lot to take in at once, but she could already feel the adrenaline running through her veins, just thinking about the research and experiments. Most of all, she could stay at Hogwarts! Even having to work near Snape was worth it.

“Oh, Professor Dumbledore!! I’d love to! I cannot believe you thought of me!” she smiled widely and her delight was reflected on her face.

“He did not Miss Bloom…I did.” A dark and silky voice came from behind her.

She was startled and looked at the door. Professor Severus Snape had entered the room just to overhear the end of the conversation. She forced herself to look up into his black eyes and tried not to let the growing feeling of uneasiness get the better of her. Okay, she had to work with him, but WITH him was not the same as being his student. So she should not let herself be intimidated by him. After all, if he had chosen her for the job, he had just given her the best compliment she had ever received from a teacher!

“I’m flattered sir, that you should think of a Gryffindor to assist you in such a delicate matter,” she had spoken before she could stop herself. She noticed a slight sadness in his eyes, no doubt thinking about his House in shambles, before the usual coldness came back.

“As you are well aware of the fact that you are second in your class this year, it should not have been a surprise to you, Miss Bloom.” A Snape-like sneer as usual.

Oh boy, their time together (in the dungeons!) would surely be interesting!

Chapter 2: The Analyticum Potion

They started the very next day. No time to waste!

Tori thought they might be working in the Potions classroom, but Snape lead her further down the dungeon hallway to a lab she had never been to before. It was his private lab. He explained to her what they were going to do, very much in a professor-like way.

“Before we can begin research for its counterpart, we will examine the sample. We need to brew a powerful Analyticum Potion to identify the several ingredients and – if brewed correctly – the formula will write itself from the liquid on a piece of parchment.”

“Sir…” she began hesitantly, afraid of vexing him by interrupting.

“You have a question? Please ask.”

“Well Sir, couldn’t we just research the potion books for a counterpart? There’s bound to be several recorded through history.”

“Of course we will search in books, Miss Bloom. And yes, the answer will most likely be in there, I’m sure you like hearing that. After all, Voldemort was never a skillful potion brewer, so he must have gotten his recipe from somewhere. However, since we are dealing with a very powerful substance, it is advisory to examine what we have first.”

His tone had been calm and monotonous, but she somehow feared he had expected more from her.

“I’m sorry sir. Where would you want me to begin?”

“We will work in this lab. It is connected to my private chambers, which includes my personal library. There we will find all the references we will need and we will be able to work uninterrupted. Does spending your days in a dungeon still look appealing to you Miss Bloom?”

The last question took her a bit by surprise, and he continued without giving her a chance to answer.

“I know that you Gryffindor’s like to reside in more ‘comfortable’ environments.” He smirked.

She opened her mouth to give him a piece of her mind, but decided not to give in to his sarcasm.

“Very well, let’s begin.”

The rest of the day was spent in silence while they were preparing to brew the Analyticum Potion.

They soon established a certain routine over the next days and worked together without ever saying a word to one another. Most likely because they had little to say except for work related matters and Tori feared that she would not be able to control her temper if he would engage in his usual sarcasm. He was her boss after all and she would do anything to keep her job.

There wasn’t much difference with her school days, except that it was the summer holidays and she hadn’t seen one ray of sunshine. Spending so much time in the dungeons did not leave her many opportunities to go out and sit in the sun. Oh well, keeping out of the sunlight would benefit her in the long run: fewer wrinkles!

She hadn’t heard from Hermione, Harry or Ron, but one evening when she was working late in the lab, she could hear Snape talking to someone in his private quarters, and she swore she knew that other voice! Curious, she stepped closer to the door and saw Harry’s head in the fireplace.

“…not sure Severus, but it might be good to think about it.”

*My, my, since when was Harry on a first-name basis with Snape? Then again, saving someone’s life did create a certain bond and it was not like they were still his students.*

Suddenly Snape turned towards her and, not even surprised in seeing her there, invited her in.

“Hello Harry.” Tori said softly.

“Ah, so you’re keeping her after hours!” Harry laughed.

It was a friendly little tease, but she noticed Snape stiffening and…was she seeing that right? Was Snape blushing? How odd. No, it couldn’t have been. It must have been the light.

Harry didn’t seem to notice any uneasiness from Snape and continued.

“Well, I’ll see you both at Dumbledore’s meeting next Saturday, Alastor is unable to come, but I’ll be there. See you then!” At that, his head disappeared.

“Do you wish to return to your quarters?” Snape asked, raising his eyebrow.

“No sir, I think we are very close in producing the Analyticum Potion and I would like to continue.”

“Let’s do so then” and with that they returned to the lab.

Tori began to stir her cauldron, while Snape added the ingredients. They had wasted some of the sample in an attempt earlier that week, but had learned a lot from it. Therefore, they were quite confident.

The cauldron had now been heating or several hours and Tori began to sweat. A few strings of her brown hair began to escape from the knot it was tied in and she had loosened a few buttons of her blouse. Her robe had long been disposed of, since it had been hindering her standing over the cauldron. Finally all ingredients were put in the cauldron and all they had to do now was stir and wait until it had boiled long enough.

Suddenly, she noticed Snape standing behind her and she could feel his breath in her hair as he supervised her stirring.

“Aren’t you getting tired?” his deep voice seemed to tremble inside her body and she could feel a cold shiver running down her spine. She shook her head and just continued stirring, leaving a heavy silence in the dampened air.

A few minutes past, Snape standing behind her all that time, when he laid his hand on hers in a joint stirring effort. He made her make wide circles at a very slow pace.

She couldn’t tell how long they had been there like that. The fumes coming from the cauldron somehow seemed to affect her thinking abilities and when he finally said that it was ready; it was like coming out of a trance. This was sure to be a very potent potion!

He took a drop of the sample and dropped it into the cauldron. This resulted in loud hissing and some red sparks were emerging from the cauldron. Snape seemed pleased and took a piece of parchment and a quill. He levitated the quill and let it suck some liquid from the potion. Immediately it began to write a formula on the parchment.

Unicorn Blood
Melted Iron
Pepper Powder
A Black Rose Petal
1 Tiger Nail

Tori smiled and had a feeling of intense joy, like a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She looked up ad her eyes locked with his. She felt completely absorbed by his black gaze and could almost feel his excitement about their results. It was like they connected in a very spiritual manner and could actually sense each other’s feelings. They stood like that for a while, very much wrapped in their emotions, when he broke off the connection.

They both looked at the floor and were lost for words. He seemed to recover first, cleared his throat and still a bit moved, he murmured:

“How clever, it’s simple enough, but very difficult to counterpart.”

Then he continued in his usual tone:

“We must not let ourselves be carried away by this little triumph. A lot of work still lies ahead.” With that said, the magic of the moment had abruptly come to an end.

Hi Tori! This is really good, it's a great idea for a story and you write it very well. I love the "chemistry" between Snape and Tori. I really want to see how this develops.

Cool Chapter 3

Thanks for the good remarks. Here's chapter 3. Let me know what you think.

Chapter 3: Imperius

The next morning, Snape and Tori went to see Dumbledore to tell him about their discovery. Much to her surprise, Snape did not take the credit for all the work. It gave her a warm feeling inside, knowing he saw her more as a partner than as a subordinate.

Dumbledore ordered them to take it slow for a while. They were far ahead on schedule and he thought that they could use a little rest before starting on a counterpart potion.

Tori took the opportunity to go and visit with her parents. After the attack on the Creevey’s, Dumbledore had shielded all muggle-parents from Voldemort. Tori herself was her parents’ secret keeper. They were aware of the troubles the wizarding world was facing and understood their daughter wanted to contribute. They would have expected nothing less of her! The visit was over all too soon and Tori returned to Hogwarts just in time for the meeting Harry had talked about.

Ron and Harry arrived at the same time that Saturday. They had lunch together in the Great Hall, but at the Head Table this time. Tori could not believe it had only been a month since she had last seen her friends. They didn’t talk much during lunch, also because Tori was unsure how much she could tell Ron about her work. The meeting wouldn’t start until late in the afternoon, so they went to the lake to sit in the sun. Very soon Sirius Black and Remus Lupin joined them.

“Well, if it isn’t our little genius!” Sirius greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. “We’ve heard you have to work with Snape.”

“How are you coping with that my dear?” Lupin then inquired.

Tori saw Harry raising an eyebrow, but it was Ron who answered.

“If anyone can handle Snape, it’s our Tori. Besides, Bill says she’s the only one suited for the job.”

Tori blushed slightly at such praise, after all, Bill was rather handsome…and ever since he had started working as an Auror, he had grown quite popular

“Come to think of it, I don’t think I know what you and Snape are working on, exactly,” Ron continued.

Harry was quick to reply: “Its best not too many people know of it, for safety reasons. Just know that it’s potions and it’s important.”

Remus smiled. “All too true Harry, and I am very confident they will succeed. If two of our greatest wizards at potions put their minds together…what could go wrong?”

Sirius grumbled a bit when Lupin praised Snape, but kept silent, not wanting to spoil the reunion.

They spent the afternoon talking about the past, present and future. Only Tori, who always had been quite talkative didn’t seem to participate much in the conversation. They noticed.

“Tori, is something wrong?” Ron’s question turned full attention to her.

“N-no, why do you ask?”

“Well, we’ve been having a few discussions this afternoon, and we still have yet to hear the first words out of your mouth. You used to have an opinion about everything. Have you gone all silent on us?”

“Err…no, of course not, it’s just my mind’s been occupied, that’s all. But I really am enjoying seeing you guys again and it’s fine by me to just sit and hear you talk.”

Now they knew that something was wrong!

“I think you’re spending too much time in that dungeon,” Ron stated jokingly.

They all chuckled, all but Tori.

Ron decided to take it even further:

“Please don’t turn into another Snape, that’s more than this world could handle. You’re even starting to look pale!”

It was meant to be a little teaser, to get her out of her shell, but it clearly had the opposite effect. Tori stood up and walked away, only turning around to sharply say: And what if I was? I’d be so lucky to have his talent and intellect. I thought you knew me better than that. That you knew what knowledge means to me. Why this is a golden opportunity for me. Clearly it’s too much to expect a little support and appreciation from my friends.”

They were left with open mouths.

“Boy, she doesn’t say a thing all afternoon, but when she says something…wow.” Harry was the only one seeing the lighter side of it.

“How can you laugh, when there is obviously something seriously wrong with her!” Ron cried out.

“What’s wrong then? That she likes her job? Come on Ron, you make it sound like Snape is torturing her in that dungeon.”

Judging by the look on his face, Sirius seemed to think so.

Lupin would rather agree with Harry, although deep down he was still a bit worried, but not for Tori’s sake.

By the time they went up to Dumbledore’s office for the meeting, a lot had been said on the Tori issue.

When Tori left her friends, she was furious. She just kept on walking, without any sense of direction or even a clue of where she was going. She really needed to get that last conversation out of her system. How could Ron have said such things! Had she been that silent? She hadn’t noticed. And even so, did she always have to be talkative? Couldn’t they just accept her for who she was? To say that she was turning into Snape! Goodness!!

After a few moments, she calmed down again. Her inborn logic made her think more rationally about the argument. Ok, she had been silent and sometimes she had wanted to say something and hadn’t. But the last few weeks she had grown accustomed to working in silence and keeping her thoughts to herself. It was only natural she began to resemble Snape. After all, their daily routine had been quite similar lately. It didn’t bother her to be compared to him. She felt rather connected with him on an intellectual level. And she was also aware of the parallels in their life. Both good students, considered as know-it-alls and loners. If it hadn’t been for Ron and Harry, she would probably have become a very isolated, lonely student. So there wasn’t a big difference between her and Snape; apart from the fact that she would never turn to the dark side. Or would she? She wasn’t to know really. What if she had never met Ron or Harry, and if some dark wizards were to praise her, for her brain, and had been willing to accept her in their midst, would she have been tempted?

She took a deep breath; she surely had some making up to do. Why had she reacted so fiercely when she didn’t mind being compared to Snape? Ugh, boys, they didn’t understand; to her, this felt like a compliment.

The office was getting crowded. All Hogwarts teachers were present since none of them had bothered to go on holiday this year. Tori was sitting next to Snape, with Dumbledore on the other side. Harry was looking a bit embarrassed towards her, but Ron’s face was still cloudy. Sirius kept on shooting dark glances at Snape before Lupin stopped him by thumping him with his elbow.

Apparently the meeting was held to discuss the strategy for the upcoming school year. Only a few weeks away, security measures had to be defined. Tori hadn’t been listening too attentively when suddenly, she felt Snape giving her a little push with his arm. She sat up straight and heard Dumbledore saying something about their work. He kept very vague about it, but said it was coming along well. McGonagall looked proud and Hagrid gave her a big smile.

Then Ron had a request from the Ministry. Arthur Weasley, who had taken over the position from Fudge last year, couldn’t be here himself and had sent Ron instead to seek help.

“My father and Alastor Moody have recently been noticing that the Imperius curse is being used more frequently by the Death Eaters. Some people can resist it after training, but apparently, a lot of wizards have no defense against it. The Ministry has experimented with lucidity potions; however the results are not promising. Can Hogwarts give us some assistance in this matter?”

Dumbledore just looked at Snape.

“Severus?”

“I guess Tori and myself can find some way to make time to create such a potion. I have done some research on the matter myself a long time ago, but since I didn’t need a potion to resist…” he paused a little to make everyone understand that he surely was not one of the weaklings Ron Weasley had just referred to.

“It shall be done.”

His little speech had several effects on the meeting’s attendees.

First of all, Ron was pleased he could give his father good news, but didn’t like the arrogance Snape had displayed in saying he didn’t need a potion.

Dumbledore just chuckled at the very same words, thinking Snape would always be Snape and that there were still some certainties left in these crazy times.

Tori went from excitement over a new challenge to utter astonishment when she heard Snape using her first name. It had sounded so natural, like he had been calling her that for ages and not for the first time. She glanced at this puzzling man beside her. He truly kept surprising her!

It does seem like spending all that time in the dngeon has affected her personality a bit, but it's to be expected. She's obviously warming to Severus, though because of the way she snaped at he boys. Not that Ron has ever been known for his tactfulness.

Thanks for the positive words. There will be much much more interaction between those two, including some other stuff that I'm sure you'll like. I'm in the process of reading your story, trying to play catch up on what you've already posted. I really like your story too.

I might post another chapter tonight, I haven't decided yet.

there is chemistry there like krysta says but the way Ron is now if he finds out or even catches on - not likely - or has it explained to him he might fly of the handle! Harry seems to notice as usual, im liking this so far keep up the good work lol !

Red face Chapter 4

I'm glad you guys like this. I just wish more people would read it. Oh well, here's another chapter.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Chapter 4: Gossip

Tori felt that she should make peace with Ron and Harry before they left. She went up to them after the meeting and looked repentant.

“Guys, I’m really sorry about before. Walking of like that…”

Before she could say more, Harry interrupted her. “That’s ok. We should have been more understanding towards your ambitions. I always knew you’d be the one to save the world and I know these things can weigh on one’s mind.”

Tori smiled gratefully. Ron seemed to feel rather awkward about the situation. He just murmured: “Don’t worry about us, Tori. I’m sure you’ll do fine, sorry.” With that, he turned around and left.

“Don’t think too much about Ron, you know what he’s like. He doesn’t like changes all too much. Once he gets used to the idea someone can actually enjoy working with Snape, he’ll come around, if not for the Imperius Potion’s sake!” Harry laughed.

“Oh Harry, I knew you would understand! Thanks.” Tori sighed relieved, giving him a hug.

“Of all people, I should know best that there is more to Severus Snape than the cranky, points deducting twit we all knew. It’s because of me that he can’t leave Hogwarts’ protection until Voldemort is defeated.”

“I’m working on that!”

“That’s the spirit!!!!” Harry stated, and with that, he left Hogwarts.

Lupin would stay on as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and Sirius was to be in charge of school security. Therefore, the Head Table in the Great Hall was becoming rather elaborate. No problem though, with all that magic around!

During the first day back to work, Snape talked to her about their new challenge and the extra work it would give them.

“I think we best concentrate ourselves on this new potion first. It will be far easier to brew and its urgency is without question. I have gathered my notes on the subject and expect you to read through them so we can begin experimenting soon. Also, considering the large amount of work lying ahead of us, you will take over some of my classes.”

It was a statement, not a question and Tori just nodded.

“I will of course keep on grading the papers myself.” He continued.

“Are you afraid that I would favor the Gryffindor students?” she asked abruptly, clearly implying he did so with his Slytherins.

“The thought had occurred to me, but given the precious nobility of a Gryffindor, I should not think you would. However, I’m the teacher and grading papers is a teacher’s work.” He didn’t show whether he had picked up on her criticism over his favoritism, but the sharpness in his voice was back. That alone would be enough to alarm anyone who knew the potions master.

Tori was all fired up now and eager to start her work, before she woke more of his anger. She sat down with the notes in front of her, a notebook ready by her side and started reading.

“One more thing please,” She looked up and saw him move around the table, setting up the cauldron. “Since we are colleagues now, and no longer professor and student, I feel it would only be appropriate to address one another on a first name basis. You will find the other teachers doing so as well.”

“That’s fine, sir.” She swallowed and thought it would not be easy to make that switch just like that. Imagine her calling Dumbledore ‘Albus’, and she would never ever say ‘Rubeus’ to Hagrid.

Apparently Harry did not have too much trouble with the first name thing. He was all Severus this, Albus that…

“The potion will not brew itself…Tori.” The velvet tone in his voice only seemed to make it more menacing and Tori quickly focused on the notes.

Soon she returned to her daily routine: breakfast, working in the dungeon, lunch, working in the dungeon and finally dinner, most of the time followed by working in the dungeon again or some more reading on potions in her rooms. It felt like she had read everything there ever had been written about potions!

The Imperius Potion didn’t go as well as foreseen and experimenting proved to be rather depressing. Since Hermione had left her familiar with Tori for safe keeping while she was away at the University, they used Crookshanks as their guinea pig. He didn’t seem to mind; so long as the potion had a chocolate flavor (he had a sweet tooth). But no matter how many times they tried, poor Crookshanks kept on performing the craziest stunts they ordered him to do. At one time, Tori almost believed that he was enjoying it!

Weeks were flying by and another school year was on the verge of kicking off.

Tori found herself sitting next to Snape during the start of term feast. Right before the sorting ceremony would take place, Snape murmured to her: “This is my favorite part. Before they put on the hat, I sort them myself. I’ve only been mistaken once or twice.”

She looked at him, amused. She would have never expected him to turn the sorting ritual into a game, or maybe he would be just the person to do such a thing. “Well, if the hat wears off, you can replace it then.” Tori replied without blinking.

He whispered his choice every time a student sat down in the char. He got them all right!!!!!!

After the banquet, Tori went to greet her former fellow students, especially Shannon Richards.

“Oh Tori, how fantastic you’re still here! It’s so dull without Harry and Ron. Please visit us often!”

That she would definitely be doing. She could use a little distraction from her daily routine. Her quarters were in the Gryffindor tower, so she wouldn’t disturb anyone if she went to sit in the Gryffindor common room.

It was somewhere in the second week of the new school year that she went to see Shannon.

When she entered the common room she could hear giggling and was right in assuming that she had found her.

“Oh, Tori, we were just talking about you!” She smiled and her face was a little red, from giggling no doubt.

“Oh really, then what’s so funny about me. Can I please join in?” Tori didn’t like hearing them laughing about her, but did her best not to show it too much.

“Ah, but we weren’t laughing about you,” Ginny Weasley replied, “just about your boss.”

“Snape?”

“Ah yes,” Shannon continued. “We were trying to imagine what it would be like, you know, working with him, spending each moment of the day with him, in that cold and dark dungeon.”

“Nothing special really,” Tori wondered what would be so laughable about it.

“Come on Tori, you don’t mean that. Most of us would kill to spend a day in the dungeon with Snape.” Ginny sighed.

“What!?!? You’re having me on, aren’t you? Girls, girls…”

But Shannon interrupted her.

“Tori, you’re not saying that you don’t know that half of the school has a crush on Snape?” Shannon looked at her in disbelief.

“That’s totally absurd Shannon. This is Snape you’re talking about. Ron should hear the both of you!” Tori cried out, not knowing what exactly to think about this. It was utterly nuts!

“Well, Ron isn’t a girl Tori and honestly, didn’t you ever notice any of us girls giving him languishing looks?” Ginny replied back.

“I thought they were looks of terror!” Still not convinced they weren’t having her on, she tried to laugh about it a bit, but the sheer absurdity overtook her.

“Yes of course, we are all terrified of Snape the teacher!” Ginny cut in, “But you have to admit, he has the most captivating eyes and moves so sensual.” She sighed deeply.

“But he’s horrible to all of you!” Tori was not about to give up.

“Ah yes, but that’s one of his most tempting features. This dark side of him just makes you want to tremble in fear and at the same time it’s so erotic.” Ginny was completely lost in a daydream by now.

“You are all seriously disturbed.” Tori answered firmly and left.

Cool Chapter 5

In honor of having a new reader I think I'll post another chapter. I hope you guys like it. Let me know what you think.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Chapter 5: Butterflies

That night, Tori couldn’t concentrate on the book she was reading. Parts of her conversation with the Gryffindor-girls kept surfacing in her mind. It really was hilarious and part of her still thought they had just been making fun of her. She badly needed to focus on something else, after all, she had to face him again tomorrow and he would not appreciate it if she kept giggling the whole time. Concluding she was not going to get any more work done, she went to bed. When she finally fell asleep, it was with a large grin on her face.

She somehow managed to restrain herself from laughing when she saw Snape at breakfast the next morning. After that first moment, it was easy to get back to business.

Snape seemed a bit preoccupied, throughout the whole morning. It was like something was worrying him deeply. Tori was wondering whether she should say something about it, when he brought it up himself.

“Last night I received some disturbing news from Harry.” He said softly, like it was some casual remark about the weather.

It immediately caught her attention.

“Is he alright?” Tori felt her heart miss a beat.

“Oh, Harry? Yes of course, HE is. It’s just that Alastor has found out that young Malfoy has disappeared. Apparently the Malfoy’s have no idea of his whereabouts. Seems rather strange, when he was about to be initiated as a Death Eater. Harry thinks he might be heading for Hogwarts.”

Still taking in the news of Draco’s disappearance, Tori looked puzzled. “Why would he come here? Can he? With all the security, I mean. Do you think he might have second thoughts about joining the Death Eaters?”

She thought out loud and was a bit surprised when she heard Snape laughing. A very strange sound coming from him, but not unpleasant.

“My, my, all those questions, I admit that I’ve been thinking about it a lot since I heard the news. One question I can answer with certainty: if he isn’t a Death Eater yet, there is no way we can keep him from entering the school grounds. Of course, he’d have to get passed the inspection rounds Black has organized, but I wouldn’t think that should be too much trouble.”

Ignoring his lack of confidence in Sirius’ security measures, Tori focused on the other questions. “Could he somehow know what we are working on and come here to sabotage it?”

“No, I don’t think it has anything to do with our work. The only thing I can think of is that he might want to impress the other Death Eaters and give them a ‘present’ in honor of his initiation. That present would be me, of course.”

He had said it without any emotion showing on his face, but Tori suddenly felt fear for him since she now also believed it could very well be the reason for Draco’s disappearance act. “Oh well, it’s best we just continue our work and not let ourselves be distracted, but I just thought that you’d want to know about it.” He was already heading back to his cauldron.

“Yes, I appreciate it, thank you.” Tori needed some more time to recover from the news. She spent the rest of the morning double checking her notes on the Imperius Potion. She could not understand why it didn’t work. Soon she was so indulged in her work, that all thoughts of Snape, Harry and Draco Malfoy had been banned from her mind.

Late in the afternoon, they were ready for another experiment on Crookshanks. The sample only needed his usual chocolate flavor to be added. The box containing the cocoa powder was empty.

“We’ve run out of cocoa powder.” Tori remarked.

“There’s some more on the shelf.” Snape answered without looking up from the sample he was stirring.

Since he remained at his seat, Tori got up and went to get it herself. A lot of potions ingredients were standing there, none of them looking like cocoa powder. Then she saw a box on the top shelf, looking a lot like the empty one that was on the table. She reached out with her right arm and stood on her toes, but was unable to grab it.

Suddenly she heard Snape standing up from his chair. In a split second he was behind her. He leaned towards her, crushing her between the shelf and him. Her arm was still reaching for the cocoa powder and his brushed against hers when he took it from the shelf with ease.

The warmth of his body seemed to create a warm cocoon and everywhere her body touched his, little sparks were emerging. She felt like she’d just jumped up into the air and was now falling down very slowly into a pile of soft, warm cushions. Barely recovered from those overwhelming sensations she snapped out of it as he backed away, placed the box in her hand and said with a hoarse voice:

“Next time, try using the ladder.” Then he went back to the sample to complete it.

She couldn’t help but feel a prickling sensation, starting at her feet, running up her spine, coming down her shoulders and ending in her stomach, making it twitch (as if there were thousands of butterflies fluttering around inside of her). Damn those Gryffindor girls! With all that babbling about their attraction to Snape and his captivating persona, she let herself get carried away by their girlie-magazine nonsense.

She always thought she stood above that ridiculous behavior. OK, maybe she had a crush on Gilderoy Lockhart, but that was in her second year and she had tried extremely hard to forget about it, but he had been handsome! Convincing herself that she wouldn’t fall back into a Snape-trance, as she would call it academically, she returned back to her work.

Miraculously, the potion worked this time. Whatever they tried to make him do, Crookshanks just sat there looking at them in amusement.

“It seems we have a winner here. Fine work Tori.”

His eyes met hers and she blushed at such praise. They cleaned up for the evening and would resume their interrupted work the next day.

Tori left the dungeon, walking on clouds. She couldn’t believe her job was going so well, and today Snape paid HER a compliment!

Smiling and completely engulfed in her own world, seeing herself as a Nobel Prize winner – if they had any in the wizarding world – she headed back to her room, not noticing the shadow that followed her.

Talking Chapter 6

Yay, I have 4 readers now. I'm such a dork about getting new readers that I shall post a new chapter quicker when I get one. So here's chapter 6. Once again, let me know what you think.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Chapter 6: A New Arrival

Out of nowhere, an arm grabbed her around the waist and pulled her into a side passage. Before she could scream a hand was placed on her mouth. She tried to turn her head; eyes filled with panic and knew, even before she saw him, who her attacker had been.

“Malfoy!” She hissed through his fingers, and bit his hand.

“Ouch!” he released her and quickly pulled out his wand.

“I thought I’d recognized you, Bloom. I wouldn’t call for help if I were you, not if you want to live to tell that is. What are you still doing here anyway? And what were you doing in the dungeons?” He looked confused and when she took a closer look at him, he didn’t seem to be his usual arrogant self. It gave her the courage to withstand him.

“Shouldn’t I be asking YOU this, Malfoy?” she asked coldly. Tori felt a lot calmer than a few seconds ago. He didn’t look like a big threat at all. Well, if she could get rid of the wand that was.

“Take me to Snape.” He demanded.

“I shouldn’t think I’d have to tell you where he is. Did Voldemort brainwash you so thoroughly, that you don’t remember where your Head of House resides?” the sarcastic tone came natural to her and she say that it had some effect on him. He looked at her like he was lost and in turmoil when he snapped:

“He’s not in potions class, nor in his office. I checked. Now, where is that rat?”

“Talking about me, Draco?” Snape had snuck up on them in his usual silent and stealthy fashion. For once, Tori was grateful for that and she sighed with relief.

“Please be so kind as to release Miss Bloom. After all, we wouldn’t want any accidents to happen, would we?” he continued to talk in a very soft and slow manner, like he was soothing an upset child, and in a way he was. Draco shot quick glances from Tori to Snape, as if unsure what he should do next. He started to tremble when he cried out in agony:

“Why did you do it?!?!”

This question obviously had been troubling him for a long time and when he finally confronted his former mentor, the tears came running down his cheeks. His whole body was now shaking.

Snape didn’t look surprised at this turn of events, went up to him, took his wand and embraced him, gently talking to him. Tori removed herself from the scene; clearly Snape was going to be able to handle the situation. With one last look at the pair of them, one now carrying the other, she went to her quarters.

He took Draco to his private quarters and laid him down on a comfortable sofa. Draco followed him with his eyes as he made them some tea. Then Snape sat down, next to his former student and turned towards him.

“Now, we’re all alone and you can ask me anything you want. I will not harm you, nor will I judge you.” He tried to be as comforting as he could, knowing that the young man was on the verge of collapsing.

“How could you betray Lord Voldemort? I always admired you and now it turns out that you’ve been double-crossing us all along.”

Snape thought a while before he spoke. There was no easy answer to this. He decided that he would be completely honest with Draco. “At one time I was very sure that I knew right from wrong, just like you do.”

He paused a bit and continued. “When I was about your age, I only felt complete when I was at Voldemort’s side. I felt like I was on top of the world when I was around so much power that could be reflected onto me.”

Noticing the eager nods from Draco, Snape was now sure he was on the right track and continued, “I couldn’t describe how my first killing affected me. Nothing compares to having someone’s life in your hands.”

A little pause and a slight sigh. “It wasn’t until much later that I realized what it had done to me.”

Hearing these sorrowful words, Draco lowered his head and murmured: “But didn’t you like and enjoy it then?”

“Oh yes, I thoroughly enjoyed myself; I was getting completely numb to any other human emotion though. No other feeling could compare to the thrill of ending a life and knowing that you did it all because you have the ability to do so, not because you have to, just because you feel like it.”

Snape was now portraying a very ugly and scary version of himself and he didn’t want to reside in these darker parts of his memory. He hoped he could make Draco see sense very soon.

Many emotions were being reflected on Draco’s face. He went from disbelief, repulsion, then to hope. “What made you change?” he seemed very interested to know, almost like this had been the real question he had wanted to know the answer to.

“Well, at first it was just sheer boredom. The killings had become too easy for me and I wanted another challenge. I wanted to give Voldemort a present.”

“What then?” Draco was now completely hanging on Snape’s every word.

“Who, to be more precisely. I wanted to give him the head of his worst adversary.”

“You mean…”

“Yes, Dumbledore. I went to Dumbledore, threw myself at his feet and begged him to save me from Voldemort. Convinced him to believe I wanted to change my ways.”

Draco spread his eyes wide open and dropped his mouth.

“I cannot clearly recall what it was that actually made me want to change. Maybe it was Dumbledore’s unconditional belief in me and his continuous support, I don’t know. But one day, I woke up and was disgusted with myself. I went up to see Dumbledore, told him everything and expected him to kill me, as Voldemort would have. It was then that I experienced just how big the difference between the two wizards was and how powerful the gift of forgiveness can be.”

He paused again to let this all sink into Draco’s mind. The younger wizard looked calm now. “I would like to see Dumbledore myself.” He finally said.

“Of course, you can see him in the morning. For now, stay here and rest.”

The sofa was turned into a bed and after taking a sleeping potion, Draco fell asleep immediately, completely exhausted.

Snape left the room. He needed to see Dumbledore to talk about this night’s events. He also needed to speak to Tori. He didn’t think she would tell the whole school of Draco’s return, but still, it was better to be safe than sorry.

Dumbledore had been most understanding. He said that Snape was doing a great job as Head of the Slytherin House, and was the best person to guide Draco through this time, considering his own experience. They would create a room for Draco, next to Snape’s to shield him from the students. All precautions had to be made to make sure none of this reached Voldemort’s ears.

Snape felt a bit uncomfortable, knocking on Tori’s door at 11:00 in the evening, but apparently she had expected him and opened the door almost immediately.

“Hm, Tori, I’m sorry to bother you at this time, but I just wanted to make sure you understand Draco’s presence should be kept a secret to the students.” He felt a little stupid telling her this; when he suddenly realized she would never participate in idle gossip.

“Of course, Severus.” She felt a bit annoyed by him questioning her discretion. “What happened and where is he now?”

“We’ve had a little talk and he’s going to see Albus tomorrow morning; he is now resting in my quarters, but a room will be made available for him next to mine, from tomorrow on.”

“Will it interfere with our work?” Her tone was cold as ice now and he noticed all too well.

“I don’t think so. He doesn’t have to know what we are working on.”

They had been whispering the whole time, standing just outside Tori’s door. It must have looked pretty suspicious to someone passing through the hallway, on his or her way to the Gryffindor common room for example…

Suddenly they heard a sharp scream and turned to see Shannon Richards staring at them in astonishment. She quickly turned around and slipped through the entrance, but not before Tori had noticed a slight blush and a somewhat bigger knowing smile on her face. Both Tori and Snape had been so surprised that he even forgot to yell: “ten points from Gryffindor for being out late!”

They just stood there, very uncomfortable with the situation. Snape turned and mumbled something that resembled a faint “goodnight” and Tori just stammered: “I’ll talk to her first thing in the morning.”

He just nodded and went back to his dungeon.

Default Chapter 7

Hey guys, thanks for reading. Here's chapter 7, I would have updated yesterday but my internet went down. Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Chapter 7: The Nocturnal Adventures Of A Gryffindor Girl

Tori decided her talk with Shannon couldn’t wait until the next morning, so she went to the Gryffindor common room. “Rosebud” she said to the Fat Lady and entered the room. Shannon was sitting near the fireplace.

When she saw Tori coming through the portrait hole, she jumped up. “Tori, I didn’t expect to see you.” In the beginning of the sentence, her voice sounded normal, but at the end, a giggle slipped in and when she stopped speaking a major grin had formed on her face.

“Stop that Shannon; I just came to explain, because somehow, I knew you would jump to the wrong conclusion. Turns out I was right.”

“Oh, Tori, don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about your little secret.” Shannon was all smiles now and really seemed to be enjoying herself with her newly acquired knowledge.

“He just came to inform me of some school business.” Tori was pleased with this explanation. After all, it wasn’t a lie.

“At 11:00 in the evening? Come on, you’d have to do better than that, and you guys did look quite chummy together. But really, I’m not your mother and you don’t need to explain to me, I understand.” Shannon gave her a knowing look.

Tori was about to explode and tried very hard to keep herself from shouting. It was absurd; she was trying to keep herself from shouting. She was trying to defend herself, in a matter that shouldn’t need defending. “I know it must sound strange, and it might have looked weird, but that’s really all there was to it.” God, she was sounding desperate now, making it less believable than ever.

“Relax, I knew even you would not be able to resist the Snape-charm, it was bound to happen. You know, if you’d like some advice, I have the new Teen Witch Special in my room. You might be the specialist on school issues, but I can really help you out here.”

“Oh yes, like you’re an expert. And what would you recommend? Sending owls with love-letters like you do to Harry? Haven’t helped you yet, have they?

Tori didn’t know why she would want to lash out at her friend, hurting her feelings like that, but it made her furious that she was not able to convince Shannon of the innocence of the scene she witnessed earlier.

“There’s no need to get into that right now Tori.” Shannon didn’t laugh anymore. “Besides, you don’t have to try to convince me any longer, I believe you, I was just teasing.”

Tori let out a sigh of relief.

“Not that I don’t think there isn’t anything going on between you two, ‘cause I’m sure there is something, but I happened to witness another get-together earlier this evening and I gather that’s what you were talking about.” Before Tori could stress that there wasn’t anything going on between her and Snape, she was startled by the last part of what Shannon was saying.

“You mean Malfoy?” she whispered.

“Yes, I saw him standing there with his wand aimed at you.”

“Why didn’t you do anything?”

“Well, I saw Snape coming to the rescue, so I just stayed in my hiding place.” Shannon stated while poorly trying to hide her giggles.

“What were you doing there anyway?” It was only now that Tori realized that she hadn’t asked before what Shannon was doing outside Gryffindor tower so late. “And moreover, in the dungeons?”

“Well…” Shannon seemed a bit reluctant to tell, but Tori gave her such a menacing look, she dared not lie.

“I was waiting for Ginny to return from meeting with her boyfriend. He’s a Slytherin.”

“Oh…and I guess she’s still not back and now you’re waiting up for her?” Tori asked in an accusing manner.

“She said that if she wasn’t back by 11, that she would probably be spending the night there. I was still up because I was thinking about Malfoy being here.”

“No one else can know this Shannon, do you understand?” Tori gave her a penetrative look.

“I do. Aren’t you curious about what else I’ve seen and heard?”

“What then?” Tori asked, although by this time Shannon was starting to get on her nerves.

“Well, I was tired of waiting for Ginny, and seeing Snape carrying Malfoy was too interesting to let go, so I followed them into a dungeon I've never been to." At this she paused a little for an effect. “But I guess it’s where you work. I hid in a lab and could hear them through an open door.”

“My, my, Shannon you’re quite the little detective. Don’t stop, it’s getting interesting.” Tori was all ears now.

“It turned out to be rather bizarre. Snape told him some scary story about being a Death Eater and the thrill one gets from killing.”

Tori eyes almost bulged out of her head at hearing that. Snape liked killing people?

“But then he went all mellow and said some stuff about what it had done to his soul and how Dumbledore had saved him. Oh, and he also said that at first his want for forgiveness had been a trick to kill Dumbledore. In the end, he just gave Malfoy a potion and passed out. I waited a bit longer for Ginny, but since she didn’t show I decided to head back and that’s when I saw you guys.”

So that’s why he had thought Malfoy would be after him. He had almost done the same to Dumbledore. Rather confused, Tori headed for the portrait hole. “Shannon, please don’t say anything about what happened tonight to anyone, promise me?”

“Sure.” But she smiled when she saw Tori disappear.

Tori didn’t sleep at all that night. Not that she was worried Shannon would go gossiping about her and Snape. She didn’t care anymore, couldn’t recall why it had annoyed her so much. All she could think of was the fact that Snape had enjoyed being a murder.

Ron and Sirius had been right all along. She was working with a dangerous man. From now on, she had to avoid looking into his eyes. Maybe he was hypnotizing her? She didn’t question his loyalty. No, she knew he wanted Voldemort dead, but for now, it would be best to see him as Snape, the mean teacher and not engage in some intellectual friendship. Heaven forbid the strange sensations that kept overwhelming her when he was near. She just needed to forget all those silly comments about his attraction. She mustn’t let herself be influenced by it. *Stick to the facts Bloom!* She knew she could do it. They had a lot of work to do and now with Draco around, Snape would be even more occupied.

When she finally felt like herself again it was morning. She got out of the bed, determined to stun the wizarding world with her amazing potion brewing skills.

Smile Chapter 8

Hey guys, here's the next chapter. Enjoy.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Chapter 8: Hagrid’s Houseguest

After breakfast, Dumbledore asked Tori and Snape to follow him to his office. Draco and Hagrid were already there.

He waited until they were all seated and started talking. “I’ve been awake most of the night after you’d been to see me Severus. I wanted to make sure that Draco would be as safe as possible. I gave it a lot of thought and I don’t think it would be wise to keep him in the dungeon.”

“Why is that? He would be close to me.” Snape seemed surprised.

“I’d like to visit Draco often. Now it’s common knowledge that I don’t like going to the dungeons too much and if students were to see me there once or twice a day, they’d start wondering about what I’m doing there. We are talking about Slytherin students here Severus.” This last thing he said with a twinkle in his eye, but they all realized that he was right.

“Therefore, I think it might be best if he got a room at Hagrid’s place.” All looked up in surprise, even Hagrid, who looked the most surprised. Draco seemed to not care about where he would stay. “We will go now. Everyone is still in the Great Hall having breakfast and Draco can hide under Hagrid’s cloak.”

And so they all went to Hagrid’s to install the fugitive Malfoy. Fang immediately adopted the young wizard and sat right next to him, clearly not planning to leave his side. This display of affection made them believe that Draco really was willing to change.

All but Hagrid were leaving the place, but Draco signaled Tori, he wanted to talk to her. “So, I hear you’re working as potion’s assistant this year. Must have really freaked Granger, Weasley and Potter out to hear that you’d be working with Snape.” He grinned.

“Not really, they’re not biased, unlike other people I know.” She answered snappily.

“Ouch, I guess I had that one coming! Oh, at least you don’t treat me like I’m made of glass like everyone else around here.” He smiled at her, looking a lot more relaxed than the previous night.

“I suppose I’ll have to get used to you being on our side.” Tori sighed, “Of all the shocks we’ve had over the past years, this surely is a major one.”

Smiling, she left for work. As she crossed the school grounds she met Shannon, who was carrying a load of books and was heading for Hagrid’s.

“Don’t you have a class to go to?”

“Er...not until 10 and Hagrid asked me to come by to discuss my project about Centaurs.”

“Ok, fine, just be in time for your class.”

“Will do Miss Bloom!” Shannon laughed and Tori joined in.

It was extremely happy Tori that entered the lab that morning. She immediately started her research for the weakening potion. Snape didn’t show up that morning. He had classes to teach. She would take over his first year’s class that afternoon and she was looking forward to it.

Suddenly she heard a plop, followed by hissing in the next room. Reluctant to enter Snape’s private rooms, she opened the door just a little to see Harry’s face in the fireplace.

“Severus, are you there?” he asked.

Quickly, Tori entered the room and Harry’s face lit when he saw his friend.

“Ah, finally, I was beginning to think that nobody was home!”

“He’s teaching you know.”

“Of course, I forgot. Say, any news on Malfoy? He has been sighted not far from Hogsmeade, so…”

Before he could continue, Tori filled him in on the news.

“Hmmm, interesting, well, if Fang is willing to accept him, why shouldn’t we?”

He was a bit more worried that Shannon also knew about Draco being there. “She’s just a kid Tori; I don’t want to get her involved in something this messy.”

Tori laughed. “Oh, she’s no kid, trust me on that one. You seem to be forgetting that she’s in her final year. It wouldn’t do you any harm to return one of her letters some day either, you know.” She added.

“Well, I don’t want to give her false hope. She’s a friend, that’s all.”

“Even friends write letters to each other.”

“Ok, if you say so. I might come to Hogwarts for Halloween though, so if I’m there in person, I wouldn’t need to write, would I?” And then his head disappeared.

“Boys!” Tori sighed deeply. When she came back from teaching, she found Snape deeply immersed in research.

She was still high on adrenalin from her first teaching experience. It had been great and she had found it a real thrill to pass on her knowledge to the children. They had been eager to learn and all cauldrons had stayed intact. This was what she wanted to do with her life!

She was already seated when she saw Snape looking at her. He seemed desperate. He grumbled and threw away his quill. “The good news is I found the recipe for the weakening potion we are looking for. The bad news is that it has an unexpected ingredient.” He sighed.

“It’ll take some research on the properties of this ingredient to be sure if this recipe is of any use.”

“Which ingredient are we talking about?” Tori forgot at once about her teaching aspirations.

“It’s the blood of a virgin, to counteract the unicorn blood.”

“That’s actually used as an ingredient for potions?” Tori was shocked.

“Not very often, I can assure you, and mostly it is used in the same way unicorn blood is. That’s what troubles me; it usually makes a person stronger by drinking it, not weaker.”

“You mean like a vampire?”

“Vampires do not live on virgin blood alone, you should know that, but it does make them stronger than regular blood.”

Tori couldn’t help herself and chuckled a bit, remembering Ron and Harry used to think that Snape was a vampire. Then he would have known all the properties for sure.

“Why are you laughing?” Snape didn’t seem amused at all.

For a moment she wanted to make an excuse, but feeling daring, she decided to tell him. “Well, Ron and Harry used to think that you were a vampire and I was just imagining that it would have come in handy today.” She waited for his sneer.

“Sadly I have to disappoint you, I do not drink blood, nor can I transform myself into a bat. The obscure properties of virgin blood are a mystery to me.” He did sneer, but she could also see that the right end of his mouth had curled as if he was trying very hard to not laugh.

Returning to the problem at hand, Tori stayed her practical self. “Isn’t there a book where we can find it?”

“Of course there is, I just don’t know which one it’s in. First we have to look into a reference book, which is what I’ve been doing all afternoon.” He looked exhausted and his eyes were red from browsing the book for so long. He resumed his search and Tori selected another reference book to help him. A half hour passed in silence. Suddenly he jumped up.

“Here it is. It’s in Most Obscure Ingredients Volume 3. I even have a copy of it here on my bookshelf.”

He started to get up, but Tori, noticing his fatigue, turned to the bookshelf and started looking herself. It was – of course – on the top shelf. Learning from her past experience, she took the ladder and began to climb up it.
