Thanks for giving me something magnificent to read over my Christmas break... PAMS!!! (:
Wow, you read it all at once? Haha... very brave of you . At this time, I'm still planning on finishing at the end of Book 6. I'm discovering that writing in someone else's world, especially when you have to follow so closely, is just not as much fun as writing your own stuff. If I write another fic, I think it'll be all my own characters . But I love Tonks and Remus too. A lot.

For those who are still reading, this is FINALLY the end of the fighting... and it was hard. I dun like writing this sort of thing, especially when the pieces are strewn all over book 6. Reminder: any stuff that sounds familiar is from JK Rowling's mind and she is awesome.

------------------------------------

It may have been minutes or hours later when Gibbon emerged from the Astronomy Tower, wand drawn and winded. Tonks had lost track of any sense for the flow of time; it was all she could do to live moment to moment and hope to string them together into a continuum when the battle ended.

Just pleasepleaseplease let them all live. Losing Sirius had been hard enough. Tonks wasn’t built for loss.

At some point prior to Gibbon’s emergence, Flitwick disappeared. Never for a moment did Tonks assume he had fled. Flitwick was small, but he was mighty. They all had little communication aside from those to either side, and occasional shouts to redirect the line, but Tonks was sure McGonnagal knew where Flitwick had gone.

For her part, Tonks cast against Grayback, driving him away from Bill’s still form. He wasn’t dead. He couldn’t be dead.

Ginny made a quiet sobbing noise beside her, but the girl’s face was dry. Her gaze strayed occasionally to her fallen brother, but she never faltered.

When Gibbon appeared, he grabbed Draco, dragging him back toward the doorway. The boy had been cowering throughout the engagement, occasionally sending half-hearted shields up when it occurred to him. He pulled from Gibbon’s grasp, but their words were mostly lost in the fray.

”Incarcerous!

“…going to put you down, Lupin…”

“Watch your left, Neville!”

Clang. Clatter.

”Diffindo.

“… only get one chance to serve, boy. You fail him now, when success has been handed to you…”

“Other left. Oh, crud…”

”Stupefy.

“…die already?”

Boom.

“Er. No, thanks.”

”Protego!”

“…go now, or for all that is dear, you’ll regret it the rest of your short life.”

Draco looked up at the man, his pointed features stark in the dark hallway. If she wasn’t fighting for her life, if she hadn’t seen Sirius and her mother turn their backs on their dark roots, if Draco hadn’t always been a bit of a prat and his parents raging egocentrics, Tonks might have felt bad for him. As it stood, however, she just wanted to stop him as he disappeared up the dark staircase.

Instead, her attention was drawn by a low growl from Grayback, who launched himself at Ron in the same move that had taken down the oldest Weasley sibling. Tonks turned her wand on him, sending a series of stunners that managed to miss the nimble werewolf. Ron turned, stepping out of the path of the man and letting him soar right over his shoulder. With reflexes like that, he was destined to be an Auror.

“Watch out!” Remus shouted as he toppled Tonks to the floor, landing hard on top of her. She grunted, breathless both from his proximity and the force of their landing. Stone floors were not kind on backs and shoulders.

Distantly, Tonks noticed the flash of red light just over their heads, although her attention was mostly on Remus. They were mid-fight, not exactly the time for charming lines and flirtation, but she scrambled for something clever to say.

“Not really the time for snuggles,” she finally gave him a cheeky look, just before he scrambled back to his feet.

“Next time, I’ll just let you get hexed,” Remus grumbled, but he offered her a hand up and lingered a moment too long at her side, checking her thoroughly for injury.

She shook her head. “You won’t. You love me.”

Her words trailed off into silence, and they both glanced up, puzzled that there was a lull large enough to allow for banter. The hallway was still, and the others stood in various stages of readiness and fatigue. Except for Ginny, who looked at Tonks and Remus with a fierce light of understanding.

“Where are they?” Surely the noisy lot of them couldn’t disappear into thin air.

Neville and Ron glanced up from where they crouched over Bill. “They went up the stairs to the Astronomy Tower,” Neville jerked his chin in that direction. On the floor at his feet, Bill looked a mess, and Tonks refused to let her eyes focus on him. Not yet… she couldn’t think about Bill right now.

At the bottom of the stairs, the Death Eaters had erected some sort of magical barrier, which was being guarded by the enormous wizard with a craggy face. He obviously wasn’t the smartest of the lot, as he kept sending spells wild and wide that were ridiculously easy to parry. Before they could stop him, Neville made a run at the barrier, but it threw him high through the air onto Ron.

The security measures only served to confirm Tonks’ suspicions that she very much wanted to be up at the top of that tower. She and Remus cast a series of spells at the barrier, but the spells merely rebounded crazily, one nearly taking McGonagall before crashing into a suit of armor.

“Watch it!” Remus yelped, but Tonks shook him off with a shrug.

“What do you suggest? We can’t get past it; we can’t take it down… and we have that clown barraging us like a first year learning how to cast.”

As they puzzled over the barrier, Snape was suddenly among them. His robes billowed behind him as he ran, and the expression on Snape’s face was odd and inscrutable.

There was a flash and a bang, one of the Death Eater’s spells coming frighteningly close to Ginny, and when Tonks looked to Snape again, he had disappeared. Had he made it through the barrier?

“He has a Dark Mark,” Ron answered her unspoken question in a low voice. “The barrier thought he was one of them.”

Tonks hated the thought of Snape facing that tribe of Death Eaters by himself, but there was really nothing to be done about it. The barrier was advanced magic and no one in the hallway had the know-how to remove it. McGonagall hovered around it, dodging spells from the Death Eater and murmuring to herself and occasionally zapping the barrier with streams of light that were immediately absorbed.

Remus slid closer to Tonks and cupped her elbow with his hand. “We have to get the students out of here. They’re bottlenecked up there, and we might be able to pick them off when they emerge, but this is no place for children.”

It was a conundrum. The logical part of her brain knew that Snape was likely safe with the Dark Lord’s followers. If he truly had a Dark Mark, it was a free pass, not only through the barrier but with the other Death Eaters. But what could he do in the tower without blowing his cover as Dumbledore’s man? Remus was right. They couldn’t simply leave Snape to deal with the intruders.

But that didn’t mean they all had to stay. “Let’s send the students with Bill. They can take him to the infirmary,” Tonks suggested, dropping her voice to a whisper. If Ginny or Ron heard her suggestion, they’d never hear the end of teenage complaints.

“Alone?” Remus mused over that idea. What was the danger? There was no indication that there were more Death Eaters in the school, and they’d proven themselves time and again during the fight in the corridor.

They debated in heated whisper until Ginny threw them both a cranky look. “Will you quit whispering? We’re not leaving. Harry…” Her voice cracked.

It was the first mention of Harry all night, and Tonks realized again how strange it was to see Ron without the rest of his trio. When they’d told her Hermione was watching somewhere else, she assumed Harry was there too… but what if that was wrong?

What if Harry was in the Astronomy Tower?

Fine. Yes. It didn’t make a lick of sense for Harry Potter to be hanging out in the tower by himself, but the idea had planted itself firmly and Tonks was unable to shake it loose. Based on the way Remus stiffened beside her, Tonks felt sure he was suddenly worrying about Harry too.

The big Death Eater paced in front of the barrier, looking like a caged gorilla. His spells were growing more erratic until he finally cast an impatient spell that rebounded off a suit of armor and crashed into the ceiling right over his head. The ceiling crumbled, and with it came the barrier.

“Now!” Tonks lurched forward toward where she knew the doorway to be, although it was hidden by thick stone dust hanging in the air.

Through the dust, Snape burst back among them, dragging Draco by his arm. Tonks didn’t even have a moment to react before they were down the corridor past the small group gathered there.

“What…” she began, but again she was interrupted as the entire group of Death Eaters emerged from behind the barrier, laying chase to Snape and Draco. So Draco was their unwilling companion and Snape had rescued him? Why hadn’t she tried to help her little cousin, even if he was a spoiled whelp? She was just as hard as her Dark family members.

“Stop them!” Tonks bounded to her feet, sending spells throughout the dodging group of Dark wizards. The others cast their own spells, and the Death Eaters returned fire.

At the corner, just before pulling Draco out of sight, Snape paused and shouted something back over his shoulder. The words were indistinguishable to Tonks, but they meant something to the Death Eaters, who attempted to disengage themselves and pursue Snape again.

Really? Was he taunting them?

“No! You’re not…” Tonks launched himself at the big ugly blond one, wand extended and spells flying furiously. Cast. Cast. Cast. She was tireless, and he was a wild man. Even at his size, he managed to parry and dodge her spells, all the while sending his own casts wide.

Around her, the students and Order members were engaging individual Death Eaters in fierce battle in an attempt to let Snape get clear with Malfoy, and then, quite suddenly, Harry was there.

“Harry, where did you come from?” Ginny stepped toward him, but he acted as if he hadn’t heard or seen her. His gaze was fixed on the distant corner where Snape had disappeared, and his face… he was no longer a boy. The look on his face was hard and solemn, as if he had seen the horrors of the world and shouldered them willingly.

It hurt her a bit to see that expression on the same face that showed joy and pride and grief so easily. The hard look flickered, replaced by fear and concern, when Harry tripped and landed on Neville.

From where she stood, Tonks could not hear the exchange between Harry and Neville, and she turned her attention from them. Her Death Eater was going strong and needing all of her attention.

The man stumbled as a spell hit him in the face, and he screamed in pain as he clawed at his face. Blindly, he stumbled down the hall in the wake of the other Death Eaters, picking up speed as his eye sight cleared. They all disappeared around the same corner as Snape, and before Tonks could stop him, Harry took off after the lot of them.

For a moment, they’d all been safe, and now he was thrusting himself back into the thick of danger. Tonks herself wavered on her feet, and Remus caught her easily.

They’d let Harry chase the Death Eaters alone. If he was a man, then he had to decide how far to take a fight that was clearly finished.

Oh my gosh. That was incredible. I felt like I was there in the fight. It was awesome. You portrayed all of the characters perfectly. I love that little comment that Tonks said to Remus about it not being the right time to snuggle. Hilarious; I definitely cracked up. You are an amazing writer and I can't wait for more. Please PAMS (:

Thanks, Other Erin! Emotional reaction is good... and this wasn't even a particularly emotional update. JUST WAIT. Bahaha.

Thanks, Emily (yes? Emily?)! Fight scenes are hard enough without trying to write someone else's fight scene. I appreciate the fact that you enjoyed reading it.

And I love that Tonks and Remus are always able to interject a bit of levity into a scene.

Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the fic, and I hope you like this new update as well .

Note: The next Tonks scene in the book was played out in excruciating detail by JK, and I didn't want to reinvent the wheel. If you need a reminder of what happened in the hospital wing, I suggest you reread chapter 29 of HBP. This scene takes place immediately after.
------------------

Several hours later, after ensuring Bill was well and learning that it was Dumbledore who had died up in that tower, Tonks could only marvel that so much had happened in one day. This morning, she had been ruminating over their wasted year at Hogsmeade, and now…

Now she had to live with the guilt. And there was so much guilt and so much regret. The death of Dumbledore, the loss of Draco to the Death Eaters, the haunted look on Harry’s face, Bill’s wounds, Ginny’s tearless fury, Molly’s sorrow… Tonks slid each layer of guilt on like a garment, staggering under the weight. At her side, helping her into the corridor with his gentle manners, was Remus. Hers, but not hers. Sharing the burden and breaking her heart.

He caught up her chin with one hand, forcing her gaze to his. “Don’t you dare play what if. It wouldn’t have made any difference.”

Annoying man, reading her mind like that. “If I’d sent for Proudfoot…”

“He still wouldn’t have been able to get through the barrier,” Remus insisted calmly. He rubbed her jaw with his thumb. “Nothing would change.”

“Or everything would. We should have stopped Snape. We let him…” What was more horrifying than Dumbledore’s death was the sneaking possibility that Harry could have been hurt too.

“Dumbledore trusted him,” Remus said. His voice went flat with anger. “Damn Dumbledore for not trusting us enough to tell what he was working on or to… confess about Snape.”

Tonks tugged him further down the hall, safe from the ears of anyone else who exited the infirmary. “Don’t speak ill of the dead.”

“Shall I speak ill of the living, then?” he snapped, but he was immediately repentant. “I should examine the body before the Ministry arrives.” His tone was as feather soft as his gaze, but it still felt like a tearing.

Tonks bit back a sob. “You should examine yourself!”

They were now getting into the conversation he’d been dreading, a continuation of the one started at Bill’s hospital bed, and Remus put his hands up as a barrier between their bodies. “I don’t want…”

“You don’t get to want anything anymore!” Tonks stomped her foot in a passable imitation of a toddler. He wasn’t going to get the chance, yet again to reject her. “Everything is about what you want, what you’re comfortable with. What if you’d died tonight, and I never had a chance…”

“Well, what of it?” he interrupted. “What if you’d died? How could I live with it?”

At least it was a concession that he cared as deeply as she did. Tonks softened. “It wouldn’t have been your fault. I’m an adult woman, Remus. I’m an Auror to boot. If I can’t handle myself, it’s my own problem.”

She wrapped her fingers around his hands, tight as Venomous Tentacula. Over his shoulder, Tonks could see Arthur lead Molly from the infirmary. The two murmured softly to each other, consumed in the moment by an entire shared history. Her fingers tightened, the Tentacula strangling his hand.

“And if I’m the one to hurt you?” He eyed her white knuckles, giving them a careful nudge. His voice was soft. Broken. Was he conceding?

“How many times have you forgetten to take your potion? Not times when you were undercover and chose not to,” she interrupted before he could. “But times you actually didn’t remember to take it.”

Remus made a noise in the back of his throat. “Just the once.”

“How about you trust me to take care of myself, and I trust you to take your potion?”

The sconce over their head flickered, and Tonks studied the shadows on his face. The lighting wasn’t kind, carving deep lines around his mouth and across his forehead. Even in the short time she had known him, Remus had aged. Was she contributing to that, or could she make those lines disappear again?

He struggled to answer her question, which meant he was searching for yet another reason to say no. Stubborn man.

Tonks wouldn't let him say no again. “You know that every single one of your arguments falls down, Remus. I can keep at you for the rest of your life. Wear you down until you give in. Out-stubborn you.”

His chin fell against his chest, and Remus covered his eyes. There was something very hollow to her victory when he was so unhappy about it. No one wanted to be in a relationship built on emotional blackmail and concessions.

Sigh. “Don’t you know, Remus? Don’t you know that I’d rather be with you for one day than spend a lifetime without you? A day, a month… a year. It would be worth it to me.” She inched into his personal bubble of space.

It was hard to face that she had two options: either she was in love with a coward or he didn’t love her enough to put aside his fears. Neither was a particularly pleasant thought.

“A year? Shouldn’t you be demanding a lifetime?”

“Something is better than nothing,” she whispered. “Don’t you see that you’re leaving me with nothing, Remus? All this love I feel for you, and I have nothing to show for it.”

“You have my love. You have the knowledge that I love you. Shouldn’t that be enough?” There it was. Full out confession that he loved her. Which made him a coward.

“Is it?”

He didn’t respond. She would have been disappointed if he had.

“Think about it. Figure out if it’s enough just to love each other and never be together. Let me know.”

And because she was determined to be the one to walk away, Tonks shouldered her guilt and turned her back on him.

I really love your description of guilt as a garment. I could almost feel what it would feel like for her to take that on.

And the layers to their relationship are just really well done. I particularly liked the 'out-stubborn' you and 'hollow victory' bit.

Really really enjoyed it.

Aww, thanks, Jer! You're a fantabulous writer yourself, so your thoughts make me all warm and fuzzy. I liked the guilt bit too, and its something I know that I do myself. It's almost safer just to burrow down into those feelings.

So here's the thing. First, no one picked up on the foreshadowing in the last one. Which means either it was REALLY subtle or REALLY invisible. Either way, I enjoyed putting it in there.

Second, this is it. Last chapter. I've so enjoyed writing this FF, and I'm like... I'm in shock that its finally done. I didn't realize I was here until I got here. I do not have any intention of writing the seventh book, simply because I don't need any more angst, I'm ready to work with my own characters, and I don't want to write the death of two characters I love so much. Let's leave them happy, shall we?

Hogwarts was at its best in June. The castle proper was cool and dark as if not yet ready to shed the vestiges of winter, but the grounds exploded with new growth. The rainy season had passed quickly, leaving behind not even a memory of puddley trudges to the greenhouses. The students could be heard through open windows all over the castle.

In June, Hogwarts spilled over with joy and life.

How cruelly ironic to lay to rest one who loved Hogwarts on a June day. Dumbledore might have sparkled over it, a perfect day tinged in sorrow seemed the sort of juxtaposition the wizened wizard might have enjoyed.

Tonks found the tireless blue of the sky and the chirping signs of new life to be an insult. She frowned at chipmunks and hissed at bluebirds for the entire climb from Hogsmeade. How could the world be beautiful today of all days? How could time keep ticking when tragedy loomed so large? Summer seemed garish. An atrocity.

“Didn’t your mother ever tell you…”

“I don’t care if my face sticks this way,” Tonks interrupted Remus irritably, although she let him fall into step beside her. He wasn't coming from Hogsmeade and so he didn’t have to climb this hill. His presence meant that he had sought her out.

They climbed silently for a few minutes. Tonks had placed it all in his hands, and she felt unburdened. Nothing she did or said would make any difference at this point, leaving her free to study the sand and gravel that shifted beneath her feet as they walked.

“Everyone I love leaves. Dies.” His voice was a ghost. “I hold myself distant from people to save them.”

“To save yourself too,” Tonks corrected. He nodded.

She wondered if that was it. A rejection without teeth. How very like Remus… He continued.

“I thought you were safe. So full of life. Vibrant. Young. Lovely. How could I help but fall in love, even against my better judgment? But it didn’t matter what I felt, because there was no hope I would be loved back.”

He paused to blink up at the castle appearing around the bend ahead of them, but Tonks didn’t rush in with all the reasons she loved him. You don’t love someone for being gentle and good. You don’t love them for what they are or aren’t. If you could pick and choose what to love in someone then you could choose what not to love. And there was no part of Remus she did not love, not his weakness, not his illness, not his fear. Those, too, were Remus. And so Tonks loved them.

Love was so foolish.

Remus struggled for a moment before taking her hand. The sky seemed a little less obscene.

“Have you decided, then?”

He squeezed her fingers. “I have. I kept thinking about James and Lily. Sirius. About Dumbledore. And instead of remembering that they’d died too soon, I remembered that they’d loved deeply before they died. Without reservation or considering the costs. They’d be… ashamed of how I’m behaving.”

“Everyone is entitled to bouts of lunacy,” Tonks whispered. She could forgive a hundred, a million bouts of lunacy in exchange for Remus. “Can you just be frank?”

Remus gave her an amused look, clearly tickled by her impatience. “I love you. No more running away.”

In romance novels, there would be soggy declarations and lots of swooning at this point, but Tonks was neither inclined to cry nor a swooner. She did pull Remus to a stop, letting the stirred dirt swirl and settle around them.

“That’s an oath, Remus Lupin. An unbreakable one, to me. I will hold you to all promises.” And in a moment of being an absolute girl, she threw her arms around his middle. “You know, I’m not impressed with your courting style at all. You’re going to have to improve before asking me to marry you.”

His hand froze in her short still-brown locks. “M-marry me?”

“If you insist.” Tonks glanced up at him, her eyes mischievous. Yes, she was aware that she’d just tricked him into asking her to marry him, and no, she had no issue with it. If they moved along Remus’s timeline, she’d be heading down the aisle with a walker.

He was speechless, which she preferred at the moment. It was turning out to be a beautiful day, in spite of the funeral scheduled to start shortly. Dumbledore would have approved of declarations of love and marriage proposals, even if they occurred just before his funeral.

Tonks slid her arms up over his shoulders, pinning him in place for the moment. Today was the first day of forever, right? Where else would he go? “But first… do you think you could kiss me? A real kiss that doesn’t end in a fight and someone leaving?”

And so he did.

Let me begin by saying that I've loved this entire thing and that I'm super excited for whatever it is you do next. (Also, shush. I have good moments, that's all. You're gonna make me blush.)

Onward to 'business.'

I went back to read the last chapter, and while I don't know if this was what you were referring to, them talking about how long she was 'asking for' just punched me in the gut when I remembered where we were timeline-wise. Oof. A year.

Moving on to new stuff. The no running promise and 'that's an unbreakable oath to me,' stuff got me, too. Has me thinking about Tonks' perspective on when Remus tries to go with Harry in 7.

That marriage proposal trick was a fantastic way to get them from where they are "now" to the start of 7.

I really like that this all happens the day of the funeral. I... am not recalling what's actually written for that day (I'm due for another re-read), but I like the juxtaposition. I think it is extremely fitting for love to win out on that day of all days.

I loved it, I think you're awesome annnnnd, I won't say I'm sad to see the story end (even if I am a teeeensy bit) because whatever's next will be awesome, too.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, OhMcGeee....it's over...

It was a brilliant ending. So very Tonks, Remus and even Dumbledore...though of course it's sad that it's his funeral I'm loving how you mix the happiness with the sorrow, and the descriptions of the weather is so perfect

ZOMG...so for the fic as a whole-it's amazing how well you portray Tonks, and Lupin as well. I can't say I've read a cannon-based fic as good as this

That was sooooo sweet! It was a perfect ending; absolutely amazing! I love how well you portray Tonks and Remus. The story was absolutely incredible; I'm kind of sad that I found it at the end, but that's just my luck. Thank you for the amazing read! (:

P.S. I look forward to your other ffs!

Yeah, that's exactly what I was referring to. There's something bittersweet writing the beginning of a love story that you KNOW is going to end in just a year with both of their deaths. I think that's part of what made the fic so hard to finish.

Ugh, I know. Remus ran scared most of their relationship. Some Gryffindor. *pokes him in the eye*

All that's really mentioned is seeing the two of them together, so I had license for them to be together but everything else was my own.

As for what's next... well... I just posted it. I'll let you find it on your own.

I know this is sort of... melancholy, but the weather on 9/11/01 was beautiful, and I remember walking back to my dorm and looking at this perfect blue sky and just feeling that it was wrong. So I knew exactly how Tonks was feeling.

Aww... that would be sad. Maybe someday as a ficlet? I'd love to read/write a really excellent Teddy/Victoire fic that isn't all shmoozy romance but has the bite that those two characters require.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the fic, and especially the end. These characters were fun to write, and I think I'll miss them a bit.

I'm glad you read, though, even if you just came in at the end. There are lots of great writers on SS, so hopefully you can get in on the ground floor of a new and wonderful fic.

I have been a fan (albeit a quiet one) of this story for a long time. You have a wonderful mind for detail and the way people think. I am sad to see it end, but can't wait to see what else you write. Thank you for the wonderful story. Looking forward to your future posts.
