This calls for a post. =DD

Ron swooped down on me fifteen minutes later, the moment I entered greenhouse number four for our Herbology class.

I was early – at least ten minutes early – and I had not expected him to find me at all. Harry was not with him, and Ron ran a hand rather nervously through his shock of familiar red hair as he stepped up to me.

“Are you angry?” he demanded.

“Well…” I said a little doubtfully, playing for time. I was not angry, if truth be told, and I had never meant to appear so when I had left them, a while earlier; but it might be fun, playing hurt and offended, and getting Ron to apologize to me – a thing he rarely did, but a thing he seemed very ready to do, right now.

On the other hand, Ron was always so unpredictable – Harry, though his mood swings were greater, usually had more justifiable actions – and I knew he could very well get hurt and stiff and fierce in response, too.

My little pause gave away my thoughts, though: Ron raised an eyebrow.

“You aren’t,” he said flatly – it was a statement, not a question. “Hermione Granger – you’re cruel! Who does to their best friend?” He threw his hands up in a rather dramatic way, and I had to stifle a giggle.

“Harry’s right,” I told him, laughingly. “You’re a prat. But a cute one.”

Ron’s arched eyebrow went instantaneously down, and he grinned at me, tall and freckled as he always was.

“I know,” he said mischievously, stepping closer. He raised a hand and brushed a stray lock away from my forehead; the wind made his robes brush against mine, and I suddenly felt Goosebumps erupt all over my body.

“Hermione?”

His voice was gentle.

It was all so sudden.

The apprehension, the awkwardness - all so sudden.

And suddenly, I did not have the strength to meet his gaze. I tried – not once, but twice – but I could not bring myself to do it.

“Y-yes Ron?” I said, my tones low, my eyes on my feet.

Ron took another sudden, step towards me; he was much too close now.

- Then there was the sound of footsteps, and both of us instantly jumped apart.

Harry appeared on the scene; his eyes travelled over Ron, over me, standing by Ron’s side, now quite a good distance away from him, and abrupt suspicion seemed to rise in his eyes. For a moment, I felt as if he was going to say something, something unpleasant – maybe even hit Ron – and my heart skipped a beat.

Then Harry’s face relaxed, and his hands fell limply by his sides. “No one here yet?” he asked casually, walking up to us and peering around.

The moment of fear passed as suddenly as it had arrived. “No,” I said, letting out the fright and breath that I had been holding in, and hoping against the best of hope that my voice did not come out shaky or nervous.

With quick steps I turned towards the middle of the greenhouse, where several new potted plants stood, inspecting them as was my custom – or pretending to. Harry followed, and so did Ron.

Moments later, the greenhouse had begun to fill.

I absolutely loved it!
I think he was going to kiss her!

Since you've all been so good..

*drumroll* A POST!

For some reason, I tried my best to avoid Ron and Harry for the rest of the day.

It’s nothing, I told myself as I half ran into the common room, arguing with myself. Yes, it was nothing: Nothing had happened, nothing at all, really. Ron and I were friends, best friends, and so were me and Harry. There was nothing wrong in talking with them, or standing and laughing with them.

Right?

Wrong, Hermione Granger. Get a grip on yourself!

I dislodged this little, though highly annoying, voice from my mind, turning to my knitting once more.

Classes were over for the day, and I had given both Harry and Ron the slip to rush to the common room. Hopefully, they would hunt me out in the grounds, and I could work on more, better quality hats and socks for the house elves until nightfall.

You had to admit, I was getting pretty good at this: anyone could now tell the hats apart from the socks, and vice versa.

The knitting needles worked, half of their own accord, as I aided myself through my wand and a nifty Knitting charm. The flames in the fireplace cackled, and my mood begun to lift.

Students arrived in the common room, laughed, talked, cheered, left, and then re-arrived. I stayed there, not paying them much attention – which was wrong, considering I was a prefect, and it was my first and foremost to duty to keep an eye on their activities.

The portrait hole opened again, the fat lady swinging outwards to allow another gaggle of tall, fifth years in, and I looked up briefly before returning to my work. A second later, someone was tapping me on the shoulder.

I looked up, and realized who had followed the fifth years in: Harry.

“Um, hi, Harry,” I said, mustering up all my strength to smile at him.

I felt at complete odds with the situation, and I could not help wondering why this was so. I laid aside my wand, and the knitting needles came to a rest in midair, a half-finished, blue sock suspended alongside them.

Harry sat down, leisurely stretching his legs.

“Where have you been all day?” he asked, plucking the sock out of midair and examining it. I was glad I did not have to meet his gaze.

“Not much, just knitting.”

He sat down, then suddenly pushed his sofa closer to mine. When he spoke, his voice has lost its conversational touch, and he sounded serious.

“Hermione? Can I ask you something?”

I felt a sliver of fear – fear of what he might ask me – steal into my heart. I knew I had nothing to fear because I had done nothing wrong but, all the same, I could not help feeling hollow and empty on the inside. Null. Void.

It was a strange, benumbing feeling.

– It was as if someone had dropped a truckload of lead into my stomach.

Anyway, amazing job on this fic! Wow. Your writing is beautiful and you've really managed to stay in-character with the characters, which I must say is quite impressive. I usually can not for the life of me keep JK's characters in-character, it's just too hard for me.
