Besides me, I distinctly heard both Harry and Ron gulp in apprehension. My own heart, hammering wildly, was ready to leap out of chest and make a run for its dear life any, given moment. I stood there, mute with fear. Hagrid was clearly oblivious to this.

“Yeah, somethin’ ev’n bett’r,” he said cheerfully. “Isla! ISLA!”

Another roar. More steps. Large, heavy, furious footsteps. Grawp had straightened – he towered above us, and I found myself edging away, wanting to run out of the picture as fast as I could – and was now looking expectantly over his shoulder. Seconds later, another giant emerged from the shadows, large, floppy ears alert.

I spun. I wanted to vomit, and the ground almost rushed forward to meet me. Almost, but not quite. A second later, two strong arms had grabbed me, and I found myself leaning against Harry.

“Another giant, Harry, another giant!” I whispered.

Harry nodded, placing a finger on my lips. “I know, but Hagrid has done worse before. And please don’t fall – if you fall, what am I going to do? I already have a frightened to death Ron to deal with.”

He was right: Ron was white-lipped and white-faced, and even his hair seemed to have lost some of its tinge of the famous, Weasley, ginger-red. Hagrid turned to us, unable to see our faces properly in the darkness, and announced, pride and cheerfulness evident in his tones,

“This is a giantess, yeh three. Name o’ Isla. Bel’ngs to Grawpy’s clan.”

“This is a giantess, yeh three. Name o’ Isla. Bel’ngs to Grawpy’s clan.”

Oh no. I groaned, more inwardly than outwardly as, within seconds, Isla had ripped off a sturdy tree and lightly tossed it aside, into the distance, to make place for herself, so that she could sit more properly. Grawp was tame, now, I would have to give credit to Hagrid for that – but Isla was clearly wilder and much worse off than Grawp when he had arrived untamed.

“And – and you plan to –” I could not get the words out. I meant to ask if he had plans of breeding them. The very thought was mortifying – giants, baby giants who would grow into tall, vicious full giants, all over the Forest. I wanted to faint on the spot.

“Plan to what?” Hagrid asked suspiciously.

I opened my mouth to reply, but something completely unexpected happened before I could do so. There was the rustle of leaves, and a tall figure with a prominent chin and white-blonde hair stepped into the scene.

“Well, well, well,” Draco Malfoy said coldly. “Perhaps the Headmaster would like to see this.”

I gave a startled cry, and I saw worry sink into every line on Hagrid’s face – he cried, in a sudden, astounded way, opened his mouth to speak – but Malfoy was already gone. We heard his footsteps through the gloom, the crackle of leaves beneath his feet as he ran.

“Eh no,” Hagrid moaned. “I – yeh all out o’ bed, yeh’ll get into trouble fer that, an’ I’ll get into trouble ‘cause I kept yeh out o’ bed – An’ – an’ they’ll sack meh – Dumbledore told me not teh get Grawpy a companion!”

The world came crashing down on my head.

Am I silly, or what? I just posted these two updates in The Second Road to Death, and I laughed my head off when I realized my mistake. I am SO not being any good at multitasking, today.

We half ran back to Hagrid’s cabin, all white-faced and all brimming with anxiety; Hagrid vowing that, should he ever be able to get us all out of this scrap, whole and intact, he would take Isla back to her tribe at once.

“This is a disaster!” I cried desperately, throwing myself on Hagrid’s massive bed and not trying in the least to stem the sobs that threatened to break all over me. Indeed, very soon, my shoulders were shaking with sobs unchecked.

“I – I – I’m going to be e-exp-pelled-d.”

“Ssh, it’s going to be okay,” Hagrid said, patting my shoulder rather desperately. “I – I’ll take all the blame. Dumbledore would never expel you and Ron and Harry!”

Tears. Tears. Tears. More and more poured into my lap, thicker and thicker and thicker, and faster and faster and faster. Harry, Ron and Hagrid exchanged pitiful looks, their own plights forgotten.

“Listen, Hermione, I’m sorry,” Hagrid pleaded.

“I – it’s o-oka-ay,” I said, between sobs, attempting to stem the flow of my tears with my sleeve. “I j-just los-st my self c-cont-cont-control. If y-you cou-could give m-me a c-cup of t-tea, p-please, H-Hagrid.”

Hagrid nodded and, at once, bustled about, making tea. Instinctively, Harry and Ron went over to help, too. It was an odd sight, me sitting there, on the huge bed, while three men prepared tea for me.

It struck me, vaguely, that we would be safest inside the castle – here, anyone could accuse us of being out of bed after curfew hours. No one spoke.

We drank our tea in silence, one tall cup each, before I stood up, still not entirely fine, and asked Harry if he had his invisibility cloak. Hagrid, glad that we had thought of bringing it along, made us hurry.

Fifteen minutes later we were in the castle, in front of the Fat Lady’s portrait. I looked at Harry and at Ron, and both of them returned my gaze in silence. I knew they expected the same that I did: a summons from Dumbledore, first thing in the morning.

There was nothing Harry and Ron, themselves apprehensive, could say to comfort me. They tried, but it was useless. When I finally left for my dormitory, at a quarter to twelve, there were tears in my eyes.

That was sooo sad Maxerzz!!!!
I hope Draco didn't tell Dumbledore about it.
