To old readers - welcome back. For new ones, I’m Maxie, and this is my tenth FF thread on SS. Us is basically a romance, with one girl and more than one boy. I do not usually work with major characters - Harry, Ron, Hermione, the like - but I have surprised my own self with Us. Sit back and enjoy this ride. You'll love Us. <3

“Ronald Weasley, what in the name of the world are you doing? OUCH. You prat, you just stepped on my foot!” I dropped the handle of my trunk, wincing in pain as I spoke, and awarded Ron a death-like glare.

“Way to go, Romeo,” Ginny giggled, sticking her tongue briefly out at him as she walked past, jumping on to the Hogwarts Express in one, swift motion, her main of vivid red hair swinging forward in the act. Ron snorted at her comment, then looked apologetically at me.

“Sorry, Hermione, didn’t mean it,” he said, picking up my trunk. “I’ll carry it over for you.”

I smiled at him, a little grudgingly, and he hauled my trunk on to the train with a brilliant smile of his own. In the background, Harry remained with Sirius, Remus and Tonks, deep in conversation. When he came over, half a minute later, he glanced around.

“Where’s Ron? And your trunk?”

“In there,” I said, pointing to the gigantic steam engine that both of us so dearly adored. “He took my trunk,” I added, answering his second question. “He stepped on my foot twice, and he accidentally stepped on Crookshanks’s tail, too. I think he’s trying to make up for it,” I explained, laughingly, when Harry raised an eyebrow in a rather you’re-kidding-right? manner.

“Oh. Let’s go inside then, shall we?”

“Sure.” I nodded, turning to the gang of people we knew so well – Order members, all of them – in the distance, and waving goodbye. There was the rumble of motion nearby, and the train’s wheels began to churn slowly. Harry jumped on, offering me a hand.

“Come on, hurry up, Herm,” he said, good-naturedly.

With a brief smile, I took his hand, and he pulled me up, on to the Hogwarts Express. We stood there for several seconds, my hand still in Harry’s, until a familiar voice tore through my thoughts.

“Oi! Harry, Hermione, I’ve been waiting for you two for ages.”

I looked up, startled: I had forgotten Ron. His red hair appeared behind me, tall and gangly and freckled and, nodding, I suddenly pulled my hand away from Harry’s.

“Sorry, Ron. Harry was with Sirius and the others.”

Slowly, Ron nodded. His eyes lingered from me to Harry’s, and back again, stopping on me for several seconds. I felt sudden colour rise up my cheeks, and looked away. Then, hands tucked in pockets, Ron said casually,

“Come on, let’s hit our compartment, then.”

I never thought so, either. Generally, I don't like working with characters we already know too well. It doesn't hold as much room for creativity as I would like. Still, like I've already said, I surprised my own self with Us. I hope I can surprise everyone else in a good way, too. =)

Since you've all been such good readers, I give you - an update!

Hehe. I can't believe I'm finally beginning to post all this, I've been writing Us for a month, now - I'm over hundred posts into the story, here. -shifty-

‘Our’ compartment was already quite full when the three of us entered. Luna sat by the window, reading The Quibbler, Neville in front of her, legs crossed and immersed in a blue-edged chocolate frog card. Ginny and one of her close friends, Oral, sat there, too, enthusiastically playing a game of exploding snap cards.

Ginny looked up when we entered, sweeping her long, red braid out of her eyes. “Welcome back,” she said simply, her gaze on Ron. “Squeeze in, guys.”

She was right: We would have to squeeze in. There was room for two in the compartment, not for three. I looked up around the compartment and, when nobody offered a solution, I sat down with a shrug.

Somehow, I ended up between Ron and Harry.

“Um, could someone shut the door?” I asked, realizing the compartment door was wide open.

“Sure,” Neville said cheerfully, getting up to shut the door and, hence, the noise pouring in from outside the compartment. For a while, all of us sat there, indulging in our own activities. It was Luna who broke the silence.

“Wit beyond treasure, is man’s greatest treasure,” she said dreamily, for no apparent reason. Harry cracked a smile. Chatter broke throughout the compartment and, within moments, easy conversation ensued. Fifteen minutes flew by. I sat there, talking and laughing, my head against the wall, until someone tapped me on the shoulder: It was Ron.

“We’re Prefects, Hermione,” he reminded me softly.

Oh gosh! We were Prefects, yes. I smiled, more out of embarrassment than anything else. How could I have forgotten I was a Prefect? I glanced at my watch: there were still five minutes left in the time we had been told to meet the Head boy and Head girl in the Prefects’ compartment. “Oh yeah,” I said quickly, quickly pinning my badge to the front of my robes and standing up. “Let’s get going.”

Harry stood up as Ron rose, too.

“What’s the matter?” he asked, looking at me and Ron inquiringly.

“Prefects,” I said with a shrug, as if the word explained it all. For a moment, Harry did not look too pleased. Then he said, “Oh. I guess I could accompany you two to your compartment, though?”

“Why not,” I said cheerfully.

“No need,” Ron said, suddenly stiff. “You’ll miss out on the conversation here. Besides, Hermione and I’ll be back in ten minutes, anyway.”

For a moment, I thought there was a sudden shadow between them. I did not know why, but I was holding my breath and, by the time I realized this, it was too late to breathe: It would be bring too much attention to myself if I breathed now, all of a sudden. I stood there, rigid. Then Harry smiled.

“Guess you’re right. See you later, mates,” he said, clapping Ron on the back. The exchanged a high-five, and I suddenly felt terrible. As if I had doubted something that ought to have been trusted. And I felt lonely, and I felt left odd.

It was not a nice feeling.
